  • Found Spanish treasure, as told by June Baliach at the AHRF symposium at BYU on 5-25-05. A man while hiking stumbled onto a silver spanish cross with a map engraved onto it. While searching the area with metal detectors they uncovered several gold and silver bars and other artifacts, but never found the main treasure. June tells the story of how and what was found and shares his theories on the location of the map on the silver cross and where the main treasure may be.

Fantastic story..makes you wonder Terry if they found any Spanish Conquistador artifacts including helmets, breast plates. I would also explore which tribes may have been involved and maybe try to interview tribe descendants for any stories or additional artifacts!

I was gonna say that the moon symbol perhaps represents their bivouac spot for the night while hiking in or out. But after reading some of the comments, probably a moot idea at this point. But maybe if it’s not too remote, it could be a good spot to swing a detector.

In the early 1970s an old friend of my Dads found several church artifacts,a 4 pound gold bar and 5 or 6 silver bars burried under a sandstone ledge in New Mexico. They assumed that it was hidden by a priest during the Pueblo uprising as he was fleeing back to Mexico. I would like to go look around the area but its on a ranch and the current owner won't allow anyone to look. I might just have to get "lost" and stumble onto the site by accident. The soldiers, priests and Spanish miners left a lot behind because they had to "vamanos muy pronto!" They hid or burried anything heavy that would weight enough to slow them down. Anything left behind and found by the angry Pueblos was burned or burried to try to erase any traces of Spanish domain or influence.

It would take a long time to carve lead into a map or cast lead into a mold with a map imprinter in it .
    I find this strange.
Also how much mining took place in old Spain? Why were they so well educated on geology of gold veins ?
seams to me like most Spaniards were more into steeling and melting it into Spanish marked coins. If you look at the history all over north and south america when they were sent over here by the king if Spain.
I suppose some people know what to look for and others didn't just like today.

If you read the history of Mexico, it's one gold or silver rush after another. The Spanish prospected and mined gold, silver and copper for 200 years before they made it into what's now the US. Back then, they were probably the best precious metal prospectors and miners in the world.

Then, where is it? Put your “haul” where your mouth is per say......A treasure like this has to be documented for historical purposes and to make sure no one is the owner...no family, that is. Who’s ancestor owned the treasure and was killed while trying to get it home.....or the native Americans the mine originally belonged to. Ugh, too many factors here......
