THANK you so much for an excellent tutorial. I have been trying to do this for months and months. I save my DVDs straight off to preserve them. It not only uses loads of space but with the menus one can't use a playlist because the menus prevent them from playing and ending automatically. You've done a great job; I just wish I'd found your CZcams sooner :)

    Just friendly advice:
    1. Bad video is more watchable than bad audio...check that mic
    2. This video could have literally been 30 seconds long.
    i. Open Media > Disc
    ii. Convert/Save
I did learn something new from it, and I thank you for it, but I had to sit through 7+ mins of fluff to hear it.
    *****UPDATE*****
Just realized you've vastly improved that audio situation in the 3 years since, judging by your newer vids. Good job!

Excellent: Never realised I could do this with VLC and so saved downloading another tool. With the help of this vid it is straightforward and unlike some tools should work on all DVDs that I can play on my PC.
The Grief: Files weren't playable on my tablet. I wanted to copy DVDs onto my android tablet for use when camping. On my PC I'm running VLC 2.2.1 on Windows 8.1 and the obvious profiles did not work for my android Nexus 10 tablet. MX player (and others) on the tablet could not play the file. Several hours later (mainly because of my ignorance), I have set up a tailored profile which produces playable files of sensible sizes. They will also play on a PC. I recommend that anybody who wants to fiddle with the conversion settings does this in a new profile rather than clobbering an existing one - it is a pain that the new profile has to be set up from scratch as there is no "copy from existing" feature. Key characteristics of the new profile are:
    Video: H.264
Video resolution: bit rate = unused; quality = 75% (adjust to suit); frame rate = 25fps (default is same as source); frame size 640 x 400 (this is the same ratio as Nexus 10 screen)
Audio: AAC (Use of MP3 or MPEG caused it not to work on the Nexus. However using this setting caused an error in VLC which seems to be known about. FFmpeg compliance had to be set to -2. Easy to do, see: forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=111641 )

I am interested to know within VLC profiles what the Encapsulation is used for. I assume you specify the format of the output file. I sometimes go into a profile and change selection to raw option, especially if I am trying to strip out audio from video.
I have to say I have hit and miss results using VLC convert/save I think it depends on the source file you are ripping from.

An easy way to tell what Title number you need is to actually get the movie to start playing (past the menu and advertisements). Once it's playing go up to Playback, hover the mouse over Title, and it will show you a list of all available titles. The one currently playing will have a dot next to it, and since it's the movie it should also be the longest in duration.

I have VLC on my computer for riping dvd to computer. Only thing I don't like is that I have to play the whole movie for it all to be downloaded. So if the movie is an hour and a half, it takes an hour and a half to rip. Is there any other way to get it done faster using VLC?

If there is, I don't know it. VLC is a media player, so maybe what we're really doing here is "playing" the DVD to a file. There's a link in the description to a video about HandBrake. That will rip and encode the DVD at the fastest speed it can.

So this entire rip is done in real time with VLC?

    Hi,
    I have a question.
What if I want to rip some of my
music video and TV show DVDs?

I've got an updated tutorial on how to do individual episodes (the new tutorial uses a program called HandBrake, which is easier to use than VLC.) You'll need to connect a computer to your TV to watch videos, or you could try a streaming device like the Chromecast.

This was useful, thanks. I had to cast it to my TV so I could watch while I fiddled around with VLC, because my alt+tab only works sometimes. The price you pay for a cheap PC...

Before coming onto this video, the whole movie was ripped and VLC kept looping 33 seconds. I didn't try playing it yet, I just wanted to know what it was doing.

I ripped a 2 hours long video, when VLC was done filling the second by second ripping in the seeker bar it started over instead of finishing and I was left with a 4 Kilobyte file that is 00:00:00 seconds long,
    What's wrong ?

It only ripped 7 minutes??? Mine does the same thing only ripped 3 mins and I tried changing the starting points

I cancelled the rip for the purposes of the video, but if you're having that problem you could try changing the encoding settings.

Appreciate the help, since I ripped a menu and not the movie. However, this video could have been made in about 1/4 the time if you weren't adding so much extra commentary!

It is completely legal to rip movies to your computer, if you own a LEGAL copy from your region. and you do NOT distribute them to others as that will be piracy.

That certainly was a helpful vid. I'm attempting to build a voice pack for XCOM 2 and I have the movies and such I need the audio from, but the issue is downloading the video first before I can mess with it. AGain, thanks for the vid.
