Why are policies to boost birth rates not working for some countries?

  • Policymakers looking to boost their countries’ falling birth rates should look beyond stop-gap measures like temporary cash bonuses, and instead build up longer-term support that allows people to have their desired number of children and when they want them. Many governments, concerned about their birth rates being too low, have tried various measures in attempts to raise their birth rates, but with varied success, Mr John Wilmoth, director of the Population Division at the United Nations, tells CNA’s Asia First.

Actually it is all condensed to one word 'hope'. Why would people procreate and give birth to children if they do not see hope in the future. Things to allow people to see are economic prosperity, social equality and security.

What most people lack is 'courage' and 'determination'. Without, 'hope' is just 'fantasy'

@@ckokloong Or it is people trying to save money by reducing expenses and not taking on additional expenses like children. Seriously, children are financial liabilities.

No it is actually the opposite.
It is about rising unreachable expectations and precisely a huge abundance of prosperity which makes people not want children.
When we were dirt poor before industrialization people had large amount of children.

@@NP1066Of course, under the current system, if we were dirt poor, having more children would not help and would, in fact, exacerbate your situation because you would not be able to afford to feed them and if you went bankrupt due to credit card debt defaults then you will not be affording anything ever again.

@@NP1066 Before industrialization, parents utilized children as free labor. People might make $2 a day, but parents kept most of the $2 kids were worth.
In industrialized economies, children are a high priced hobby that rarely pays off.

Falling birthrates are a direct result of quality of life in cities. Citizens don't want to be slaves to the government. They want to raise their own children without government help.

Because it is not only expensive to raise a baby or even give birth in some countries. It also requires effort and time to accompany the child.

Look at the cost of living. Look at how people are less and less willing to maintain lifelong relationships. Look at the direction the work is heading. I don’t blame people for not wanting kids

Parents don't want their children cared for by strangers

  • @Ladyhotfire78
    @Ladyhotfire78 Před 8 měsíci +12

The cost of living is too high and requires two full time working adults that make good income to survive. Adding kids seems absurd unless one parent makes so much that the other can stay home and do an adequate job of raising children. Why do we need more people though? We don’t have the manual labor needs of the past. Most things are automated and AI takes the place of dozens of minds. Jobs are more specialized which suggests a curated cohort of workers that have specific skill sets or higher education levels. That’s definitely not the job for the masses.

Ever increasing population demands more food, power, clean water, transport, fuel, and land. Once the resources shrinks the cost will increase, global shrinking of population will begin.
Unless there is another Earth nearby rich with resources or better technology to create new resources of food, clean water, fuel (energy), land & transport....population will eventually shrink.
I believe there are many unexplored possibility for all the resources on Earth just that our current technology isn't good enough to extract all these resources...and political issues (corruption & political) restricting alternative energy, alternative food sources, alternative land & clean water sources.
Other than that, working from home is important to keep children under proper care as cost of child care is really high.
Cost of education as well, must keep it within affordable prices.

It's these questions- what will be my children's financial and personal security, living, health, education, work, other opportunities. Let's use Japan for example. They can offer this stuff to help parents. But it doesn't mean they won't be shamed for it.
Low Birthrates are what happens you take people out of traditional villages. And put them into modern, un-natural environments.
Especially with the whole Testing Culture in these countries. The kids are burned-out before they take their first job.
And then you're putting everyone in the same city and neighborhoods. Uprooting the entire structure of the village they came from.
Now they have to play a guessing game of who likes them. And who doesn't. There's a reason why some guys escape into anime instead. The characters are different, and so is the setting.
There's no expectations, hostility, or Dog-Eat-Dog scenarios in these anime shows.
