This study seems to couter this. Other studies, however, find contrasting results. Butz and Ward (1979) suggest that economic upswings bring about the increased employment of women, making children more expensive during times of economic prosperity. Therefore fertility trends are likely to be counter-cyclical. Macunovich (1996) finds evidence for this expectation in the U.S. The negative relationship between economic growth and postponement also seems to be contradicted by some recent studies. Billingsley (2010) finds that the GDP in Eastern Europe after 1990 is positively correlated with fertility postponement, a result also observed in Hungary for the timing of first birth (Aassve et al. 2006). These latter studies are examples of a broader literature that adopts the economic crisis argument to explain the sharp decline in fertility that Central and Eastern European countries have undergone after the fall of communism. Once again, however, the evidence is mixed. Kohler and Kohler (2002), using Russian data, find, for instance, a negative association between a drop in GDP and TFR at the macro-level, but this finding is not observed at the micro-level.

Unless the retirement age is raised to somewhere around 70~75 at this point, no one in their 20s today will ever be able to retire at all (or at least receive benefits). Everyone will be a slave.

@@davidhoover3347yes that’s exactly what people want. You say these phrases as if they are a bad thing. The reason the top ten happiest countries in the world are the top ten is because they have socialized those industries, because they have put price controls on essential goods and services etc. not everything should be strictly controlled by privatization. This is why healthcare prices have skyrocketed to unaffordable levels, why our food is poisoned. I’ve lived in Australia for a total of three years of my life and I can tell you with confidence that I was far happier living in a place like that than I am here. I want what Australia has for the United States. Im not alone in this regard. I don’t like that they have extremely strict gun laws, that was my biggest complaint about the way they do things. Other than that the country is outstanding and people there enjoy a much better quality of life than we do here in almost every aspect. But go ahead, continue to think of socializing key industries as a boogeyman concept, it will only hold your generation and subsequent generations back from enjoying a higher standard of living.

That might have been true before but the whole trajectory of how humans view life has greatly changed and that is something that can't be simply undone. Now if taxes were imposed on ppl to get them to have kids I don't think it would go as you expect since the mentality and information ppl have now compared to before is completely different. You'd be surprised how many ppl would prefer paying the extra taxes as opposed to getting more children. In any case, it'll never equivalent to childcare. Before World War II, average income people paid almost no income tax, the revenue was created by import taxes for the federal government, which also caused incomes to increase over time. The fix, for this is fairly simple, increase import tax, decrease income tax, and modernize factories with robotics.

    • @tw8464
      @tw8464 Před 2 měsíci +1

@robertsenger5660 average income people paid the import taxes / tariffs that got baked into the cost of goods and services. I'm not saying one way or another what's "better" or "worse." Just saying, it seems to me that all taxes, despite being different forms or appearances, are ultimately income taxes. For example, sales tax is just another way of getting income. The taxes are all income taxes but try to disguise themselves by using a different name or appearance. The real question is how regressive the taxes are? The sales tax can be better understood as a regressive tax that is actually quite a large amount, almost 10 percent income tax on low incomes. The import tax is added to the cost of goods and services on top of thar, or is not made available in the country at all.

This is an individualistic decision not to have children. I am female and I see no logical reason to have children, and yes I would have no problem affording children. I do not see a point as I would have to basically give up on my career to have children. I also love what I do and I would be extremely depressed if I would have to become a mother. Women are choosing not to have children, and you can blame women’s liberation and choice. Blame birth control. This isn’t a problem for the old people of this generation alone, this will be an issue for the next 200 years, and on. There are very few incentives to have children, you cannot force women to give birth.

I once wrote down the estimated cost of having a single kid. With everything we'd need to provide for said kid in the first year. Here's my amounts.
    Worst Case: $41,600
    Likely: $21,300
Held within that amount is just the cost of just giving birth:
    $6,000--$28,491 Labor and delivery
(If you're someone who doesn't have insurance you're looking at like $30,000-$50,000 for the delivery alone)
Price sways depending on what assistance you'd need giving birth (C-Section, Epidermal, etc.) So let's say; you'd want roughly $30,000 disposable income set aside to ensure you don't die in childbirth. That amount also doesn't accommodate any pregnancy complications you may have to pay for prior to giving birth because I forgot about that fun possibility in those 9 months. Might be safest to double Labor and Delivery to $60,000 to ensure worst-case scenario pregnancy doesn't kill you either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(AKA your job firing you for being pregnant; fatal complications, baby on a ventilator, etc.)
Seems safest to me to have $71,600 set aside so that neither you nor your baby die in the first year. Oh! But, also, none of these estimates included Childcare facilities and maternity/paternity leave is not one full year. Google says the average is $321 a week. So, after you calculate childcare facilities into this; I bet that number is somewhere over $88,292.
If you can't tell; I had given up gathering data on the exact prices midway because it was way out of our budget. Since we'd have to save so much, I was hoping to rely on IVF in the future. But if the AL ruling on embryos spreads; IVF is virtually unavailable because no one is going to provide fertility treatments if they might get slapped with a murder charge. Not looking forward to the 10%-20% chance I get slapped with a murder charge myself for having a miscarriage.
TA-DAH! That's how you lost a new generation, Congress 🎉
I suppose none of you guys can do anything to "fix it", huh? It's impossible, right? I guess; best of luck to all us ladies trying to get pregnant in the female-only prison!

I had a conversation with my mother in law yesterday, she's in her 60's. And no, she's not senile, yet. It was very eye opening to come to the realization how out of touch the boomers/ OLDER gen X. They think my step brother is going to be able to find a house for $800 dollars a month in a place like where you can't find a single home on the market under 250k right now. The average home price where she lives is well above 400k dollars. She's living a reality that doesn't exist anymore. She and her husband had a home built for them by habitats for humanity over 20 years ago. The house cost her 50k dollars. The appraised value of that house today? Over 500k. Outside of people you see on tv and the internet, the older generations have absolutely NO IDEA how bad it is for Millenials and Gen Z.

He says that the money wasn't stolen, but let's be realistic, the politicians spent a lot of Social Security money on other things. That's why current workers are paying for the Social Security of current retirees rather than current retirees paying for it, and that's the conclusion we have to come to when intragovernmental borrowing exists while the federal debt is much greater than the (purely) actuarial surplus for Social Security.

So what you're saying is kind of like saying "we need to be concerned about drowning deaths" when the top causes of death are homocide and heart disease. Your priorities in terms of costs are off. If you care about costs, you care about what he's talking about.

Absolutely! I wish more people could or would listen to him. We all know how hard it is to get out of debt, and it is never fun. However, when you make the cuts and get rid of the bloat, you will have more money in the end. We need to vote for individuals, not parties. Maybe then we could get back on track. 🙂

We don’t need to pay the debt back entirely. In fact, economically it’s ok to have a deficit. The government does need money for certain things. The problem is, at this current rate of spending we put our entire economic future in grave danger. We need to cut *drastically* to get back in sustainable numbers
