I am only managing to keep one cactus alive, it's outgrown the soil it came in and I haven't filled it since then. The longest-living one disappeared for 3 months when I moved, and when I found it, it was doing better than when I had lost it! And then it promptly died after a week back in my care. I've given up on plants at this point lol

@@ezrea9313I don't intend to sound rude at all, but do you research the plants you looked after? Individual plants have individual needs. I have dedicated UV lights for some plants, but complete shade for others. They're also very picky when it comes to water, I have orbeez/slow watering systems for some plants, barely water others, and have some plants just in water instead of soil. Cacti and succulents generally are also extremely picky and die of stress pretty easily. If you want something easy to keep, try geranium bushes, terrariums (I keep moss), ivy, or even crops. Garlic is pretty easy to keep, but so are citrus saplings. You can get packs of three saplings (lime, lemon, and orange) for about £20 online, and they're small enough to keep inside for at least a few years :)

The Sims Makin' Magic actually adds some gardening stuff too. You could create vineyards by buying sprigs for grape and elderberry vines, and planting them in the "As the Plot Thickens" gardening plot. (It looks like the Insta-Plot Victory Garden, but slightly darker in color) That said, it's not as in-depth as Unleashed's gardening, as it's more a way for you to get those ingredients without having to buy them, like with the various objects that occasionally give you ingredients for spells, though I'm pretty sure the pantries will recognize them as crops.

In TS2 if you stock your fridge with food from your garden (or fruit from your trees, or fish that you caught), it will be used in the recipes you make and when you eat them your hunger will fill faster and decrease slower.
You can identify these dishes that are prepared with "organic" meat and produce because they will have sparkles over them.

The Sims 3 Store also offered The Greenhouse, which did allow you to make greenhouses (however, mods are needed to get them to work properly), along with other gardening tools.
The original Sims game was definitely the most challenging to maintain. Sims 2 might not have had the "bloom/evolve" feature, as in Sims 3/4, but like you pointed out, talking to plants does that trick.
While Sims 4 is the only iteration to offer the grafting feature, with the Sims 3 Store Greenhouse, grafting tools were first introduced.
Since I love gardening and fishing, Sims 3 offers the most extensive experience for both, but because the lag gets a bit overwhelming, Sims 2 gardening/fishing (albeit a little more basic), imo is far better than Sims 4.

You forgot something in regards to the plant dangers in Sims 3: if you set up a fence, put down a gate, and then lock the gate to "sims and household", you can prevent zombies and wild life from harming your plants. Still might have to deal meteors though, haven't experienced those yet - and I DO have Ambitions and Seasons folks, it's not the lack of expansion packs.
Edit: you also forgot that there IS a greenhouse, but like the cowplant it's locked behind a paywall.

K I like the cowplant but wish we could have an omni-plant in Sims 4, would have worked perfect with spellcasters pack, or even aliens because it sounds like an alien plant. Oh Sims team the marks that you miss 😔

Sims 4 could have been ignored lol.
The only thing I dislike about gardening in Sims 3 is it decreases fun. It's gardening not farming, nobody plants a garden unless they enjoy tending to it, "grannies puttering about the garden" is not a statement about grannies toiling away in the garden likes slaves but grannies having fun growing delicious home grown food to be made into even more delicious home cooked food. Gardening is fun even if it can be hard work.. Gran no longer uses a spade, she uses the handy hand trowel/shovel tool to dig the holes to plant her crops.. Three scoops to make the hole? Naw it's 15 and gran humming along with a smile and allot of happiness because she is imagining the reaction of those that will eat the final produce and that reaction is pure joy she imagines. And yeah that covers my gran and she didn't just imagine pure joy.

Learning about Gardening in the previous games is interesting, and I appreciate what information was shared about those games. However I can’t help but see the clear bias towards those other games as it seemed you went back to at least the most up to date information for the Sims 3 but pulled old footage from the Sims 4. This is known, because plants and gardening went through several overhauls over the years. The flower depicting the plants happiness hasn’t been seen since the seasons expansion, where gardening had its first base game update with several quality of life improvements to the system. It got another base game update last year with cottage living and another one that wasn’t attached to a pack expansion, where it changed how it was listed (the lowest value is no longer normal, instead it’s frail).
Not only that, where you went through what gardening can be used for in the other games and what type of careers are associated, you just made gardening seem like a feature with little to nothing in base game. You mentioned getting seeds from the computer, but most seeds are unlocked either by grafting plants to get a new plant, raising your skill to unlock the ability to purchase the plant, or even something crazy like going to space in order to find the UFO fruit (this fruit is base game and can be obtained on one of the rabbit hole missions with a rocket but is stupidity rare). More plants are included in a lot of packs, like the every occult game pack has new plants associated with the pack, cats and dogs has catnip, outdoor retreat has plants to be used for the new herbalism skill, jungle adventure has several new plants tied in there that is used for the pack dishes. There’s like 50+ plants overall in that game. You could have an alien garden, a garden filled with mystical plants, a very regular FarmVille type.
Similar to sims 2, there is a gardener career that takes you down two career paths; botanist or florist. The botanist career is more of the science like gardener, where as the florist is more artsy. There is a skill called flower arranging which lets you make bouquets, the higher skill you are you can even make a bouquet that sniffing or viewing can extend life and prevent death. There is also a death flower in base game, which you can use to save a sim about to be taken by Grim. (The money tree is also in the sims 4 as an aspiration reward included in seasons)
Watching back on the previous sims games, it looks like there isn’t nearly as much to do with gardening compared to the sims 4, the closest being sims 3. There is so much you can do with gardening in the sims 4 and it just feels like the game wasn’t given a fair chance to see what it could currently offer to you, since it seems like you didn’t even play with the features considering how confused you sounded about splicing. I just feel a bit cheated here since I came in interested to see clear differences between the gardening in the game, and then the entire gameplay gets shrugged off like there’s nothing attached to it besides “oh there’s splicing, and the cowplant is here, I guess”

I played the sims 2 but skipped the sims 3 as I couldn’t get it growing up. I played the sims 3 on the mobile app (which is how I was introduced to gardening in the sims). I have no nostalgia for the sims 3 gardening like most do, in fact I am playing the sims 3 now just to see why everyone says it’s the better game. I know it’s fun to rag on the Sims 4, every single community seems to do that with there respective franchises, I just ask if you are going to compare games and even go a bit into what pack brought what to gardening, and then get to sims 4 and stick to just base game, chuck an unclear table on screen and call it, that’s not fair to those who genuinely love the sims 4. (In terms of that table, sims have the ability to research a plant in base game and once it is researched, information about that plant shows up in a notepad and gives you the information you need in an easy to swallow format. You really don’t need to consult an offsite graph for this game unless you don’t care about the gameplay)
Everything I said about gardening isn’t even everything that can be done with it or every playthrough idea. The system established is very flexible from a gameplay standpoint.

as much as I dislike the sims 4, I actually quite like gardening in that game. I'm not exactly sure what it is about it, but whenever I do play the sims 4, I often end up gardening at some point. I think for me it's the fact you can just plant stuff straight in to the ground without having to bother making a specific plot to plant in or get plant pots or anything, it makes it a lot more appealing to me.
