  • A more detailed deep dive into Shimano's cup and cone hub technology. This hub was a test wheel, and ended up with around 25,000 miles. Hub was still in perfect condition, but the rim's braking surface was worn out. Next video we will discuss Deep Groove bearing & hub technology (DTSwiss).

This is a terrific video that CLEARLY explains the components of cup and cone bearings that are used in Shimano wheel bearings. This video is a great addition to Rick’s video series on bearings.

I am very surprised that the new cartridge hubs by Shimano is not getting more attention. I have heard they are moving away from cup and cone. I just ordered a pair and I am hoping they are good.

Personally i wouldn't go with the ceramic balls. For better performance remove the cage and use oil. I find ceramic overhyped.

For even better performance, remove the seals so there is no drag on the balls. But, your point brings up the age-old argument, if you remove the cage, do you add an extra ball? The other argument regarding removing the cage is that the balls will run up against each other and when coming into contact with each other, they are rotating against each other in different directions.

Do a little research before you make a fool out of yourself. Look at Shimano's latest wheel page bike.shimano.com/en-US/technologies/component/details/cup-cone-bearing.html - CLEARLY STATES CUP & CONE BEARINGS! WOW.
