How the US lost the trade war in South America: giant deficits in trade, leadership, and character

  • The United States runs chronic trade deficits and fiscal deficits of billions of dollars, every day. China runs trade surpluses of billions of dollars, every day.
Over time, these surpluses become giant pools of capital that can be either returned to China and invested here, or directed into new opportunities abroad.
Also over time, America's deficits reduce opportunities, both abroad and at home.
China is investing hundreds of billions of dollars into Latin America, forming strategic relationships and business partnerships at all stages of South American supply chains and consumer markets. Meanwhile, western countries are fiscally exhausted, unable even to pay for domestic spending.
The financial and economic realities are stark. Just as severe is the crisis of confidence, and the failure of America's leaders and our people to turn the tide, to remember our legacy and promise. Until that happens, expect more of these country maps to turn red.

I met a Chinese young man in Shenzhen about 10years ago. He used to work for Huawei in Latin America and he learned Spanish while he was there.
He saw that the locals like to wear sandals and found out that they need to import from the US, but the sandals where made in China. He figured out that he could sell at a much cheaper price if he directly import it from China and sell to the locals. He quit his job, returned to China and sourced scandals, returnes to Latin America and became quite successful.
I met a man on a flight that goes to Russia in the spring and summer to run his farming business and sell the produce to the locals. In the meantime he'll talk to the locals and see what they need or think the need in their daily life. Then in the winter month he'll return to China, buys the stuff the Russians need, take a break, and return to Russia in spring to do the farming and sell Chinese products to the local Russians.
I have tons of stories like these

Have you wonder why there is a trade deficit? do you think it just deficit spending? the real reason for the problem is the banking sector. if other country do deficit, their currency will decline, equalising the deficit as spending power decline, however because the banking sector is so dominate in the US, it is keeping USD up, which make it harder for US to export and thus wider the trade deficit further. the root of the problem is banking, however the banks makes several trillion dollar annually shuffling money for the world, if you try to lockdown then bank by raising reserve requirement like China, a big chuck of the US economy will disappear over night. so US is in a catch 22, it can't change it economic structure without taking a hit and no politician want that hit to happen in their term.

800 billion? pas de probleme, no printing cost, anymore, just hit the keyboard and 800 billion disappears.
you have to wonder, though, how long it will take before someone wakes up and says, ''umm, non, pas de dollars, in rmb, svp.''

Actually what we have learned since the 2008 subprime crisis
Buying for US debt is not unlimited.
Example the US FED had to by 71% of the newly issued US Treasury debt in 2013
The printing up of money, anct landed that debt in the Fed Balance sheet.
Where the last time they tried to dump some of that debt on the American people from 2017 to 2019
they froze up the credit markets and had to come back in and buy back that debt even more debt
And the most worst thing of all
the USA has shown they have no problem taking private internal debt not backed by the US Government
and converting it into external Sovereign debt, that is backed by the US Government and ultimately the American people

The UN, the western world acknowledges this, even as the US and the MSM ignores this, they won't ever dispute this as they know it is true - so they just conveniently never mentions it. Yeah, keep on burying your head in the sand if that's what it takes for you to feel better.

Kevin, producing ongoing and high trade surplusses is not a benefit for a country, it just shows that there is a basic error in the countries political model ... China should build up an effective social system and free education so that the population has confidence in the future, spend money consuming, have children, benefitting from the highly productive economy ... instead of selling so much abroad so that others benefit !

I wonder if Kevin has any stats of his viewers, how many % of his viewers are Americans or from the west? I'm Malaysian Chinese living and working in US, I have been here for a long time and I had known or knows lots of American, lots of them like like to travel, but never to Asia or SE Asia, some will go to Europe or Mexico, but most just travel within US. I think American in general still think that USA is the best of the world and top of the world in everything, I just wish American will venture out to Asia and open their eyes. As for trade deficit, even if US has trade surplus, do you think it will go to benefit the general population? No, it will go to big companies, or they will made lots of bombs to drop on other countries. So may be US not having a trade surplus is a good thing.

  • @trisoil

trade is not the only way to do business, there is investment. The investment of Amercan companies in China generate over 300 billion each year which is about the same as the trade deficit with China. So the trade deficit is not that a serious problem.

Deficits in leadership and also deficit in thinking, mentality and philosophy. This is why I think China will win this new cold war that the US started unilaterally because when each country makes a mistake, China leadership has the wherewithal politically, philosophically, culturally and also the intelligence to correct that mistake and always aiming for long term sustainable, equitable growth that does not require the plundering of other countries. But the US leadership are too st*pid, short-sighted, and captured by special interests (ie corrupted) to correct any mistakes, especially the ones that make corporation a lot of money (not necessarily real value) at the detriment to the American people and the world.
