    When Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked up to take oath as the member of the House on Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi showed a copy of the Constitution to the PM. This was preceded by PM Modi setting the stage for the government's offensive making a special mention of "the dark days of Emergency" in his customary speech before the commencement of the new Parliament session.
    The Government and Opposition are locked in a face-off after the ruling NDA decided to renominate Om Birla for the post of Speaker while not deciding on the post of Deputy Speaker.
    Earlier, the Government reached out to the Opposition to arrive at a consensus for the post of Speaker, but the Opposition - combative since its strength has gone up - insisted that the government give a commitment on giving the post of Deputy Speaker to the Opposition.
    This has resulted in the Opposition fielding its own candidate, K Suresh, resulting in an election for the post for the first time since 1952.

If you put a frog in boiling water it will jump out but if you put the frog in normal water and slowly raise temperature it will not realise till it’s too late. Hence I feel today’s time is way worse and we are slowly losing are civil rights and living in fear to speak our minds.

    @Sarthy1000 Před 2 dny

    It's quite depressing that a panel of such intelligent and experienced commentators was so off the mark in this episode. Barring a few exceptions, this whole conversation was a perfect example of “majoring in the minors.”
    The argument that Modi’s authoritarianism may not be as bad as Indira Gandhi’s emergency is quite simply a cop-out of your roles as journalists and commentators who are supposed to be watchdogs against abuse of power that is happening NOW-not apologists for it on the on the grounds that something worse had happened 50 years ago.
    Second, I would argue that Modi’s bent for authoritarianism is far more dangerous to the country than Gandhi’s emergency--notwithstanding the fact that “all opposition leaders were jailed” at that time and are not now. The reason is Gandhi’s emergency stemmed from one person’s (her) lust for power. This does not stand much of a chance in a massive, diverse country like India-proven by the fact that Gandhi herself realized it and announced elections, in which she was roundly defeated.
    In contrast, the reason Modi’s authoritarianism, if not vociferously challenged, can have far more dangerous consequences for the country-is because his intent is to change the very charter of the country from a secular one to a Hindu Rashtra. His brand of authoritarianism calls for ideological brainwashing through propaganda of millions of Hindus against Muslims, their fellow citizens. Indira Gandhi, for all her vulgar power lust, did not have any such overarching ambition of an ideological conversion of the masses of Indians. Hence, her emergency, even though undoubtedly more acute, did not pose as big a risk to the country as Modi’s agenda does.
    Under such circumstances, to call out Rahul Gandhi’s gesture of waving the constitution as “childish” while making no mention of the breathtaking hypocrisy of Modi lecturing on the importance of the Constitution is to have lost all sense of context and significance. Reigning in an autocratic PM whose party has repeatedly talked about changing the constitution, rather than calling out the opposition for trying to do so, is far more important order of the day.
    Finally, it is important to separate Rahul Gandhi from Indira Gandhi. Granted, in partisan politics, a party's history and legacy have some relevance. Yet making Rahul responsible or answerable for Indira’s Emergency is not only unfair to him but also a disservice to the business of running the country-because you are barking against the wrong tree. You can’t conduct the business of the nation informed by a 50-year-old history if ground realities have changed.
