This was recorded in 1980 in Washington, DC at Lisner Auditorium...the musicians are Charlie Waller - guitar and lead vocal, Kent Dowell - banjo and tenor vocal, Rick Allred - mandolin and baritone vocal, and Bill Yates on bass and bass vocal...the reason I know this is because I was on that "live" recording...just making the facts straight....Kent D.

I beg to differ. When I was 7 and it was Thanksgiving, us kids got put to bed. I snuck down and hid behind the couch and saw my grandpa and uncles playing music and smiling. They kept drinking water out of brown bottles for some reason. Bob was playing banjo and Steve was playing harmonica and Ron was playing guitar and papaw was playing guitar and singing. I fell in love with this song. As I grew up I saw it performed many more times. I really miss my papaw. In my heart, they are the ones that sang it.

She walks through the corn leading down to the river. Her hair shone like gold in the hot morning sun.
She took all the love that a poor boy could give her and left me to die like a fox on the run.
    Such fine imagery.

I'm the same age and I sure didn't need to stumble on these boys. i just happened to be blessed to be born and raised in the mountains of God's blessed Kentucky, listening to this beautiful sound. I don't believe it makes me entitled. She's probably some yankee who thinks liking obscure music makes her better than them other mainstream folk.
