  • With their loss in Game 4 the Leafs are now on the brink of being eliminated by the Bruins in the first round. TSN's NHL analyst Martin Biron joins SportsCentre to discuss the biggest difference between the teams, and why Toronto's core four continued to struggle in the post season despite William Nylander's return.

Yep. Now it's a country club atmosphere where everybody's comfortable because they got their bag. They're being paid like they've won 3 cups in 4 years.

Regular season vs. playoffs. It's actually that simple. The entire league figured this out a couple of decades ago. Except ironically for the Leafs. You can't win in the playoffs with a top heavy team of skilled but soft forwards. You need a deep team with talent spread throughout that checks, blocks shots and grinds along the boards.

iI empathize with the Maple Leafs fans as they have had their fair share of heartbreak over the years. As an Islanders fan, I understand the frustration of having a team that falls short in the playoffs. However, as someone who is married into a Maple Leafs family, I root for them. I am a big fan of Austin Matthews and proud of his achievements as one of the best American born players in the game. But every post-season, it's like groundhog day for the team. They have consistently failed to deliver the goods and prove that they have what it takes to succeed. Despite this, the front office keeps the same core team together every year. The Toronto media also reacts in the same way every post-season. In my opinion, the loyal Leafs fans truly deserve better than this.

The “Downfall” started with an untested GM put into a situation where he figured making a big splash with his first signing (Tavares) would be good for business. Well, jersey sales went thru the roof so that part was smart. From then on his inability to build a team with good goaltending and Defence showed quickly. I’m not going to blame the so called core 4 for getting paid, the GM didn’t have to do it but he did anyway. His thoughts that a team of skilled Smurfs was the way to a Cup was horribly misguided, and wasted a minimum of 2 years until he saw his mistake and tried to rectify it. The fall of 2018 was the GM’s turning point when he received an offer from the Hurricanes for one of two people in trade for a guy who was sitting on his ass at home daring the GM to trade him. The offer was for either Slavin or Pesce for Nylander. Either of those two were way better than any other Leafs D men including Reilly. That would have been a great start at actually building a Defence. Now you have what you have in Nylander, a sometimes great player who also takes plenty of games off and trips over his bottom lip when leading a 3rd line. Oh, that mysterious injury? I bet it was actually disciplinary, because of what he “didn’t” do in their last game of the season just prior to Tampas 5th goal.
