I know this is a year on, but if you shade/highlight in reverse (dark colors on the raised portions, near-white on the inside) that will go a long way for magical effects. Also if you use a bright silver drybrush in sporadic, random places then use speed paint/contrast or alcohol inks, especially transition from one color at the base to another color at the opposite end, that sells it really well

  • @aegisvald5093
    @aegisvald5093 Před 3 lety +4

You are correct. Finecast only exists on models that were cast in metal before. They tried to change to a cheaper material without changing the molds. The extra gates were tacked on after the fact when finecast was a terrible failure and they tried to improve the flow of the resin by increasing the gates. The forgeworld models were created with the intention of being cast in resin so they work better as resin.

And in your "Storytime" segment, when you brought up the "Killing stuff is the fun part!" aspect made me remember one time I was facing off against an Eldar armor with my Space Marines... I had a Stormtalon doing it's thing, and he decided that it had enough fun, so tried taking it down, but wasn't having much luck. One of his final shots was a Fire Prism that really had not had much luck this game, but figured "Why not?".... and blew it out of the sky with one shot. The reactions was... well, a lot of surprise and some cheers on my friend's side. Mine was "Well. That happened."

I'm painting some black power armour at the moment. I start with a black base coat, drybrush it neutral grey, then spray a coat of Gunship (cool, dark) grey just transparent enough so you can still see the drybrushing. It's actualy more of a charcoal grey, but it looks black, and highlights the edges subtly. Oh, and I give it a wash of Nuln Oil too.

Just split a kit of Helverins/warglaives ($125AUD total from GW direct, Roughly $100 from an indie, so a split would be $62.50/$50AUD). Plus, you can use any spare bits to convert it to a wardog or moiraix, paint em up and have fun.
Tip though, drybrushing is your friend. Just drybrush some leadbelcher, choose a colour for the shell, put some bronze or another metallic accent on there, shade and you're done. One of the easiest and most fun ways of getting into it.

That painting part in the beginning couldn't be more relatable. Its always a challenge when you start practicing new techniques on expensive models that already have a beautiful basecoat and shade on them. But not all hobbies are created equal so don't let yourself get unmotivated. I'm starting to practice edge highlights now. As for blending I have no clue and plasma glowing effect gives me a hard time.

I recently finished my own knight. I bought one when they first came out and had a lot less options.
Knights have been around for a long time. Ever since the first edition of Epic in the early 90's. I don't really see them as a playable army in 40k but they do make great lords of war for any imperial army.
I had the same experience with metal models lately, which is weird since many of my models are metal and I've worked with it for over a decade, it just feels awkward working with it now just feels weird. I'm sure those ork kommandoes will turn out to be ok though.
I do agree with you about the fine cast. Wtf was that about, aside from heavily fluxuating metal prices. The proces was insanely bad, not that fw resin was much better... ...I have a valkyrie that needed at least two tubes of putty to fill the gaps and an Eldar titan that needed a lot of hot water to solve the 'limp dick' effect on the guns. For those prices I expect perfection and have been very disappointed at almost every turn.
GW plastics rule though, even if prices might go up due to stupid brexit.
As a final remark: if you really like mech suits, start a Tau army.

April of this year I bought two dominus class knights (Castelan and Valiant) one questoris class (Canis Rex) and a box of armigar warglaves and Helverans. So far I have managed to put together one helveran.
And the pile of shame grows larger. 😔

I agree with you on Forgeworld. Aren't their models like over a decade old now? I am debating a titanicus Warbringer only because it's my fav Titan and that way I can say I own one. Same for the Warmaster even tho Titanicus is the only option for it

The problem with getting knights is, I have one, and I want another but I don’t know if I get the Questoris pack, the armigers or the chaos variant for shenanigans

Yeah, as a beginning Necrons player, I'm really turned away by the idea of finecast. I thought about getting Imotekh, but that was until I learned he was resin.

Everyone likes bad things sometimes. I like cheesy horror.
For the record, Phantom Menace is one of those bad things.
