Besides separating music by genres, I keep a crate called "Main stage" and it is filled with personal favorite tracks that I would play as if i were a main stage DJ. If you aren't playing specifically for the audience and wanted to express yourself in a set or wtvr, these are my favorite tracks that I would play off of. I grind a lot of those transitions in case where I do get opportunity just play my style of music, which is a lot of future bass, trap and anything with good lyrics. To me its all about showing people they never knew they would like.
I watch these kinds of videos all day just to find something here and there I either forget or something I may learn new...thank you for not wasting my time (like 90% of the other djs do) and actually hitting productive subjects and tips. Cheers !
I absolutely agree with DJs moving on to the next track too quickly. I feel it kills the mood.
Yeah, I remember we used to feel that a lot of DJs were boring because they would play close to the entire song so we went with a faster style, but you still wanted to make sure the crowd had time to enjoy the song. Some DJs now think faster is better and I've really seen dudes play 10 tracks in the first 2 minutes of their set. Yes, if those tracks are hits you will get a reaction from the crowd, but after a couple of tracks you will ruin the vibe you could have created by playing the track a bit longer.

Most DJ vids lose me half way through because the speaker is so flat and unenthusiastic. Watching these vids is like being talked to by a (really knowledgeable and experienced) friend or something. Great points. During the mix if one of the songs have just beats on the intro/outro, I don’t mind to get in key because on that particular moment of the song there is no key difference. However many times, I noticed that some songs, even in the same key, just don’t blend. Then I go safe on “drop on one”. I never thought about the “sing along transition” and also go to a high energy song on the next one. Very good tip. Thanks a lot for share.

Finally!!!Thank you in advance for letting us in on 2018 tutorials. I am looking forward to learning more from you especially scratching, which i feel is the hardest thing to pick-up considering most new djs like myself does not have experience on turtabalism with vinyl. Perhaps you can even teach it on a digital controller like a pioneer since most starting djs now buy dj controllers not vinyl.(i own a ddj-sx2) Your tutorial of counting music has tought me the basics which is so important in Djing and ive used that knowledge ever since. Man....awesome video as usual. Here's a question for a future STK. How do you transition from prepared sets to DJing on the fly. I'm currently relying heavily on preparing my sets especially as a dancehall/reggae/soca DJ where Hook/Verse/Hook is all you can really play before your crowd starts losing interest. I can easily mix 60-70 tracks in an hour. Just don't really feel comfortable doing a gig where I haven't prepared something in advance. Also how do you feel about using sound effects when transition between tracks?

Nice video & tips as always. This is definitely something that a lot of deejays I know struggle with. With Old School Hip Hop n RnB I mostly mix out on the 8-bar hook into the 8-bar intro of the new track, gives you nice continuity where the hook ends just as you get into the new track. If the intro is 4 bars, I just loop it. For me it's like telling a story, you gotta flow onto the next page and not just jump around. As for mixing in key, as much as it's an obsession for me, the rule sometimes doesn't apply especially with Old School Hip Hop for example where you can almost jump around the keys without worrying too much. But at the end of the day I think it comes down to knowing how to manage the energy in your sets.
I sometimes mix the last 4 or 8 bars of a verse with the new track. The longer, the better cause it gives the crowd an opportunity to hear it in a way they’ve never heard before.
I find the the crowd going bananas when the new track is of a different genre (example from hip-hop to dancehall or even dance & electronic or pop). This works perfectly when it’s a mixed crowd. You gotta know your crowd.

The way I like to start my transition is to bring the new track after the break down of the previous record and blend it in. I love great blends so I will allow the 2 tracks play together. I enjoy stretching my mixes, and I know a lot of NYC House DJs do that. I mostly buy tracks that are 5 mins and longer. My longest track I have a 12 mins long. It's tailor-made for great blends. I use the EQs from the previous tracks to fade it out, and then I slow to drop the fader till close to the end, and I drop it on the one from the new track. This works for me, and since I am a House DJ, It is comfortable and creative. Still haven't work on FX yet for I want to keep sharpened my skills with the basis.

It is only a general rule to not blend vocals on top of each other. If you choose the right songs it can be magical. This is God Tier Blending.

I’ve switched up my crate organization about five times in the last couple of years. I’m a mobile DJ and I play weddings, clubs, and other events. I use Serato DJ and I settled on making general crates with a bunch of more specific crates under them. For example I have a general folder I call oldies and then I have a sub folder called 70’s and then another sub folder called 70’s hits. It’s worked for me because if I’m just looking for a old track to play I can look through the entire oldies folder or I can get more specific if I’m looking for a 70’s favorite. I also have each track in my library displaying the key, energy level 1-5, bpm, grouping such as wedding, ladies, radio hit, or sing along, and comments such as MWW (mixes well with) - (track title) and genre crossover. I don’t know if it’s the best way but it works for me.
Dj TBUF that really helps a lot specially for us DJs I'm with u on that one and for that I'm working on in 2018 on organizing my crates so I know what to use and what to mess with that's dope as well.
Dj TBUF very interesting approach to crates you’ve taken there, and i think your last sentence suggests a very salient point. There simply isn’t a best way. There is a way that works for you, as long as you’re open to new ways of working, or adapting when your style or gig type changes, then it’s always best to just use what works for you.
As an example, i probably do something very similar to you, but i have at times wondered whether something like your MWW would be useful. I might have a go at this, but i don’t think the comments section is quite right for this. I would love to see some kind of relational database functionality brought into DJ software, where you could, on the fly, link a track to multiple others. Basically it would work using similar algorithms to Spotify, but they would be user-generated. The result would be a set of recommendations that you’ve constructed that would work well with the song you’ve just played. That for me would be a real game changer for people like me who simply buy to many records to retain a working knowledge of what other songs it works with.

I agree Moving the next track quick when people like the track is annoying i hear a lot of people complain because Some Djs are doing it constantly i do it now and then but not continuously.
Yeah you got to let people vibe to the songs they like. Letting them hear it for 20 seconds is like serving someone a nice steak, but then taking the plate away before they can take a bite 😁
My crates are by set list. So I have a long gig crate, a short gig crate, an originals crate, a remix crate, and a road testing crate. I find it’s easy to have big categories and large crates so I can plan out what to play and not have to work hard to find it.

I organized all my crates with ITunes. Genres added, rating added -> from 1 star = chill sound to 5 star = club banger, and comments for special things like Christmas or Birthday Edits. And then you can organize everything on the fly with the intelligent playlists from iTunes. in Traktor (my dvs system) I can grab directly to these intelligent playlists
I have two backup hard drives as well, where I just isolated every single intelligent playlist from iTunes as a folder. Now I'm happy with everything.
But stole me about 3month of time to categorize everything new etc.
Back in the day when I was an underground House DJ spinning vinyl imports, I would regularly do 4 mins blends. On some occasions I would blend for even longer. Basically making a mashup. These mixes require you to be extremely familiar with the song structures and require you to think way ahead into the mix to make sure the mix is clean.
P.S. I don't miss having to babysit the blend to make sure the songs don't drift out of sync now that I use Serato.
My crates are simple. Main crate goes by year, and under each year I have 2 sub crates called "Chilled Songs" and "Club Bangers". So Example I would have a crate that has all my 2017 Hip-Hop songs and then in my "chilled songs" sub crates, I would have song that I like that I could play for maybe warming up or turning down towards the end of the night, and my "Club bangers" crate would only have songs I would play during prime time. The key thing is to make it a habit of updating those crates once you analyze your new songs, make sure it IMMEDIATELY goes to your preferred sub crate. I have these crates the same way across each genre.

As far as crates...I organize them by genre and type of party/event i.e. Wedding, Old School Party, Hip-hop etc. and I give them cool names like Jazz Storm for my jazz crate, All White Everything for an all white party I did and even G-Code for my gospel crate lol some songs are in no crate but I know they're on deck..... but as most DJs know the crate is just a guideline or a starting point, I always deviate and go off the crowd and my "mental crate". lol
Some songs have a 2 bar, 4 bar, or 8 bar intro. Depending on the two songs you are mixing you will have to choose the correct time to drop in order for the two songs to phrase match.
Sh**, you are so right about some DJ now on days, they think they are good or sound good by dropping a new song every 10 second and adding a bunch of Fx. For each its own but if we go that route people making new song will only have to worry about making a 15 second song. By the way another way of transitioning song as you said will be tone play or word play from one song to another as you kind of explain. One more thing about mixing is about considering the particual phrase you are in on the song. Great discussion by the way.

Hook is another word for chorus
In regards to fast transitions, I totally agree with you. When I would go to clubs and DJs only play 15 seconds of a song repeatedly I would get annoyed. My thought process was why did you bother playing the song. But DJs are the worse when other DJs are playing. For transitions or dropping it on the one and your everyday crowd (not dj crowds), most screw ups will be forgiven if you have good song selections.
Fully agree on the size of your crates. At one stage I started struggling to put decent sets together purely because my crates and library were just way too big. Working on trimming it big time where if I come across a track I know I will never play or haven't touched in a while, I remove it. Smaller crates IMO allow you to learn and know your music better and just find ways of being more creative with it.
Yeah, when you take a good look at crates you're bound to find quite a few songs that you never play. In the beginning, it felt great to be able to bring "everything", but it doesn't really make sense to bring songs you won't ever play. I'm running into a lot of those tracks in my crates ;)

Dj tlm you are a great teacher....as a beginner you make it very understandable. Question what is a hook? Is that after the intro or and after the full play like where you see the dropdown? thanks
The hook = the chorus. That is the part of the song that comes back a couple of times during the song. For most people it is the part of the song they will remember the best. The also refer to the chorus as the hook because it is the catchy part of the song.
Would you say that "dropping it on the one" is a good way to mix tracks with different speed? Or should they still play at the same tempo? Awesome tutorials btw!
It’s great for mixing tracks with different speed. Do keep in mind that if the difference is too big you might shock the crowd a bit 😄
6:54 I get what your saying. A-Trak's sets come to mind when you bring this up. I think that guy has unparalled turntable skill. But I just can't get down with his mixes because the transitions are too brief.
There's a guy who dj's on the radio here in Toronto Canada, and he's technically AMAZING and his track selection is too, but his track cuts are so quick that by the time you absorb what the song is, hes moved on and mashed up
I Under if it's and 8 bar hook and a four bar intro come in after the first four bars but my question is what if the next track starts with the hook and not the verse. Are you able to bring it in anyway or should you start the next song when the verse comes in better?

DJcity is a dope DJ pool, but it does depend on what genres you're looking for.

I’m a dj in Virginia and I’m kinda obsessed with songs being mixed in at the same key. I almost feel a song has to be mixed in at the same key. Now when you drop on the one that’s different. But the majority of the time I’m dropping songs on the one A because it’s a hot song B people are on the dance floor or C I can’t find a song to cue that will blend good enough which is rare.
Mixing in key is less important. Especially if you’re not doing long transitions (16 or 32 bars). If something just doesn’t “sound right” then I don’t blend it, but otherwise I don’t pay a lot of attention on key

What up TLM. I'm with you on this subject on getting digital crates organized for 2018 cause my gold it's have a organized crates for different types of music genres for any type of events ( Internet Radio, FM or AM Radio, Clubs, Pub, Lounge, Video Chat Rooms Periscope, Live.me ETC.) So that be my main goal as a DJ cause you never know what crates to use and also making it a short crates so that can save some on my other crates to my Google drive so I can have my backups just in case if my laptop get broke I know I have all in my Google Drive and organize just in case any thing goes wrong also I might try to do its bring my flash drive of my fun lil remix tracks of few djs buddys and few of my stuff I'm doin real soon. hi i wanted to know about mixing the same tune like repeating the same verse a couple times until it becomes shorter,i have an idea but its difficult for me to do
ok I'm a young DJ how would you guys advise making a chance from song to song with a huge tempo change say I'm trying to bring it down from a high point normally what I would do is if say the song I was playing was 100 BPM and the song I want to play is 50 BPM ?
You can use a feature called "pitch lock" in virtual dj. This locks the pitch of both tracks while you use one hand on the cross fader to smoothly fade over the 2nd track and other hand on pitch of 2nd track to slowly adjust to where you ultimately want to end with.
When you change the bpm of a track to mix it in, do you you slowly change it back to its original bpm once you've transitioned over or do you leave it at the altered bpm?

What best sort stuff get if new to this ?
All of these questions about when to drop or transition can be answered by experimenting with different mixes. Over time you will get a hang of when to drop or transition a song. The key is to be VERY familiar with the structure of the songs you are mixing.
I Make my Crates this way. My Favorite music is House,Jazz and Old School 80's .So I Have my Crates Label House sub crate 2016,2017 etc etc Jazz sub crate 2016,2017 old school the same way. Now with Mainstream pop, hiphop i may get the top 10 songs for each month and put them in each Crate Because most people are Radio music listeners. So that is all they want to hear,so i just put those mainstream radio songs in those crates.to keep those crates small. However for my true music lovers i have old school crate, house crate design for those that love music that will just let me play and want to hear stuff thats not on the radio or music that they have not herd in a while.

I know this podcast is quite old now but you mentioned how djs are dropping tracks for 15 sec and moving onto the next track. My question is how do you do this as it takes me way longer then 15s to load the next track find the cue piont then drop the track
It’s not hard if you have your tracks lined up in a folder. And you don’t have to look for your cue points. You load the track and hit the cue button and the track is ready to play.
And it’s not literally 15 sec for every track, but just really short

Yup! If I'm mixing or dropping it on the 1, 99.9% of the time it will be with a scratch. That just became my natural way to let the vinyl go. I have to cut it in :)

Well, that works well when I'm answering like 4, 5 or 6 questions. This whole episode was more or less about the same topic and branched off into side topics and back again.
So it's still possible to timestamp it a bit, but it's a lot more work (for me) compared to the earlier episodes.
But I'm still experimenting with the best format for the show. In the next weeks I should have it the way I want it to be. I think timestamps will return! :)

yoo, what do you think about (320kbps) illegally downloaded mp3-files and play it at your gigs?
And most dj's are playing the same music in all (mainstream dutch) clubs, how can you stand without dissappointing the crowd?

If a track is good quality then it's good quality. The only problem with some of those downloaded tracks is that they will have 320 in the tag, but on closer examination it's pretty clear that they're not 320 at all ;)
I won't judge people for downloading tracks because I've done it, but I prefer to do it legally and with DJ pools and tracks that I buy I can be sure that the quality is on point.
You can stand out by adding your own flavor. You can play other tracks AND play the hits. If you want to play something brand new and you're not sure if the crowd will like it, just make sure that your next track is a hit that they will love for sure. That way you always have a backup plan

I have more then 1 TB of music and i use like 200+ gig's of it,BUT i'm not a one GENRE Dj i play HIP HOP, R&B, HOUSE/POP, SOCA AND REGGAE/DANCEHALL and yes there is a DIFFERENCES in the 2. I learn to Dj in Brooklyn NYC Plus i'm from BARBADOS move to the US in my early Teen's and Caribbean people Liston to a WIDE range of Music. So unless you wanna play the same music that the Dj before you played you better have music to play. more in my case is better.
Even with all those genres you still don't need anywhere near 200GB of music. That is a LOT of music!! But to each his own. There nothing wrong with having all that music with you if that works for you. I just realized that for me personally it doesn't help when I have more music and bigger crates so I'm making them smaller. Appreciate the feedback man
I had over 500gb of music. Now I learned that smaller is better...so I keep the top 250 song from 10 genres...for me smaller is better too. (Reggae, dancehall, hip hop, r&B, 80s 90s rock , Reggaeton, dubstep, house, mainstream and freestyle )
I guess that all good when it's just 2 Dj's at a party but when you use to having 4 + Dj's at a party it can get messy as hell ...i don't like replaying songs anyway.
Fast mixing is crazy wack. If you don't even give the crowd the first verse its just gonna piss them off. What's the point of playin jams people love if you only give them 20 seconds of it. I'm not impressed by the amount of tracks you can cram into one set, it's about what you play and your creativity with how you play it. I'm guessin this trend is due to the ever shortening attention span of the audience as well as some dj's. Word to the wise, public gigs you must play the first verse at the very least, leave that fast mix at home for your mixtapes. Stay blessed, peace TLM.

I love it in edm, even a sample jogs the listeners memory and gives them expectation of what's coming and you surprise them with something even better, easy mindfuck
Yeah, I can understand that. I guess what I said is from the perspective of a HIP HOP, soul, jazz, reggae, funk DJ. But the shortening attention spans of DJs and listeners certainly comes into play with the fast mix trend in my opinion.

A DJ pissed me off one time when he started Lose Control by Missy Elliott then transitioned after the intro. I stopped and stared then sat my ass down for the rest of the night. He lost me.
I hate when DJs only play one or two versus. Play the whole song. At least 80% of the song
That does not work. Unless every song you play is the entire crowd’s favorite song
With actual recorded mixes you publish for people to listen to in their private time I fully agree. In a club, nah man.
