Closer to the Heart seems easy but the way you have to play that first part using your index and pinky fingers while holding the other two for that droning part that makes the riff sound fuller. to me that's a tough one.
It's actually not a 12-string. It's a nashville. I just recorded it last week for another video. Eventually I'll put out the Nashville vs 12 string video. It will be very anticlimactic. LOL. Mark

Hey Carl. You have an uncanny sense of perspective. It certainly does. It's way too big for me. Even when I lowered the action the angle sucks. The Airwave 12 is my favorite. Man I wish I could get one in red. Ken from Reverend has no idea how many I'm selling for him. He was such a nice guy the first time I talked to him but he wouldn't give me the time of day at NAMM. I was kinda bummed out. I didn't even want anything from him. I just wanted to let him know that I had at least 12 verified purchases and I'm sure the number was more than double that and maybe get a high five from him. I got some kind of sarcastic version of whatever dude. Anyway, we all have bad days. Mark

I've played so many 12-String riffs, my favorite is still the intro to And You And I by Yes, its simple, got some Harmonics, and sounds beautiful

Not exactly sure what my list of these would be, but you hit one that I would definitely choose - Hazy Shade of Winter. I think I do it in a different key, though.
You start on the D string and wind up in Dm; I start with the A string and wind up in Am.

Of course you do. Take a look on reverb. There's a Schecter that's very rare. I think I'm going to pull the trigger. It's $790. TSH 12 string.

Amazing (or perhaps not!) how different Ticket To Ride sounded on a 'standard' tuned 12 rather than on the Rickenbacker we're all used to.
I really appreciate you checking it out but I'm not sure what you mean by standard tuned. Ticket to Ride is in standard, it's just a tad above 440 which is very typical of the Beatles. It's very hard to replicate classic sounds on youtube, especially when the sound involves reverb or compression. The initial render squashes the crap out of it and the upload to youtube sucks all the life out of it. People don't realize how different everything is once you upload. We're talking less than 1/50 of the data. It cracks me up when guys are saying stuff like, I think I hear a little wavering in the mids. I have very expensive headphones and monitors but the source is what matters most. This has nothing to do with you. I'm just talking. Yeah, the Ticket to Ride sound has too much verb and not enough compression. I actually just put a set of pyramid flats on the Reverend. I sold my Ric and I had a couple of extra sets so I tried it on the Reverend. A little less life than the wound strings. Anyway, I'm guessing you're talking about the fact that the pitch is slightly higher because they sped it up or maybe its just a crappy example. Thanks so much for your time. I really appreciate it. @@8MinuteAxe What I mean is that the 'standard" 12 string has the high octave string 'first' (as you look down at the guitar) whereas on Rickenbacker 12s the thicker, lower, stting is first in each pair.
So when striking the string the tone is noticeably different.
It's the biggest part of what makes a Rickenbacker 12 sound distinctly like a Rickenbacker.
And of course, it's that characteristic George Harrison Hard Day's Night era sound.

I am partial to playing twelve string slide. Not that common, although bluesman Roy Rogers sometimes plays a resonator twelve.
You have spoken about your guitars, Mark, and done some reviews. Why not an episode focusing upon how you choose which guitar to play for videos, and gigs, too, for that matter.
Hey Steve. You know what's crazy. I toured for years with one electric (my teal American tele) and one acoustic (A custom legend that I sold right before I started the channel). I was always a minimalist. For over 20 years, I never owned more than 5 guitars at a time. I've had over 40 come and go in the last 3 years and I believe I currently have 35. I have a gig on Saturday night and it's at a small place that I do just guitar and vocals (solo). The last 3 times I've played there I've used my Taylor Mini Koa. Right now that guitar is strung with Nashville tuning. I will have to make the decisions you speak of. I think when the channel grows a little more, more people will be interested in specific stuff. I really should be doing a weekly live show even if it's just casual. I could answer questions and do more lesson type stuff. You've gotten the wheels turning. I appreciate that. Mark

Roc Loks work great. Down to 2 straps for all my guitars. Another fun video Mark! Over the Hill, to me seems more difficult than a few of the higher rated ones. My bias may be the fact I’ve never been able to play it! It’s on the list! I’m just finishing up the Rain Song I got a few years ago from you. I love the song and it’s a good challenge. Jim. You touch on a good point. The rating system is flawed by the fact that people have different strengths. You could be a shredder and have trouble with Never Going Back Again and a fongerstyle player and have trouble with the slide. Thanks for your comment. Mark

Very good compilation of riffs! I ordered the Rok Lok from your link. Another thing you might consider is a compilation of 12 string solos in Rock songs. A good example would be from The Byrds in the song Turn Turn Turn. Back when it first came out, I spent all my free time lifting and dropping the arm of my turntable to learn the solo from a vinyl record. Old memories!

I'm ok with you thinking Eagles are the greatest band ...although, total sales the Beatles are by far the best selling with a whopping 65 million more than Eagles in the US and 200 million more than second place worldwide. The problem with all the stats now is that everything is jacked up with streaming. It's not the same. I'm sure you feel the same way. It takes no effort and very little financial contribution to download stuff. It's not like when I was 8 and I would buy the greatest hits because you at least got a few good songs. Ordered the ROK LOC sets . Awesome content. In my search for a Squire Paranormal XII ( because of you vid last month), I came across a Schecter CSH-12. Hasn't been made in awhile. Awesome 12str electric.

I find that many acoustic 12 strings songs use the guitar tuned down 2 or 3 frets - where as the electric songs are at standard tuning. Thoughts?

Someone with the Eagles thinks that they are too good to be seen on YT apparently. They have no idea how many new to their material listeners they miss out on. Also, old music gets forgotten sometimes, and a little blurb in a video can kick off a rediscovery among fans from way back. I myself am on a kick of binging Yes and Rush that I haven't listened to in a while. Because I ran across a Steve Howe video and then the video with Geddy filling in for the late great Chris Squire at a live playing of Roundabout. I can't remember when I last heard any Eagle's music.

Great video again Mark, I am always surprised at how many songs used a 12 string without me realising it. I recently saw an old Cliff and the Shadows TV show from 1965 and was surprised to see John Rostill, the bass guitarist who replaced Jet Harris, playing a 12 string guitar on The Girl from Ipanema. Later on in the same show I was also surprised to see Hank playing piano. The Smiths - Level 7? LMAO
What Difference Does It Make Has a Rhythmic structure that some people find challenging. The vast majority of people on here (over 90%) are at some level of beginner or advanced beginner. If I put the level that it took me, who has been playing professionally for 30 years (doesnt make me a great player, Im not, but all of these riffs, including Never Going Back Again which I rated an 8 are pretty easy to play competently). Since the difficultly of this riff is laughable to you why dont you email me a video of you playing flawlessly through what difference, youve got everything now, and william, it was really nothing (a little measure of your right hand technique and rhythmic competence). I'll be happy to feature you on my channel as someone who has mastered Johnny Marrs playing style which many find quirky and challenging with a lot of open tunings, unusual chord voicings, and demanding rhythmic picking.
