@@John_Thompson he is not even the first who does things like that - I watched a lot of noise reduction audio tutorials on youtube - none of them had real clear background noise that you can reduce - so many people full of shit

Repeatedly my audio sounds as though I'm in a toilet, what am I doing wrong ????
because it takes more than this basic step to really reduce the audio. I again got tricked into watching these useless tutorials with no evidence of them working
When following the directions in the video, I would always end up with an unusable file. And the reason is that while it DID reduce the noise, it also made the vocals sound tinny, or under water. To prevent this I found that using a Noise Reduction (db) level of about 34 and a Sensitivity of 1.50 did the trick.... all hiss or background noise is GONE, but also no tinny sound. While this may seem counter intuitive and flies in the face of the settings (and why) in the video, it did the trick.... and that is what matters. I am posting this just in case others ran into that problem. Cheers!

At 1:42, I think you are mistaken. O dB noise reduction would be NO reduction. All the way to the right would be max in this case.
you are actually right. Noise Reduction (dB) means how much you want your noise be reduced. If it's 0, then, the output file would be the exactly the same. If you choose to too big, the output file would be reduced too much, while you own voice are also severely affected.
really unprofessional video, only explained one parameter out of three(noise reduction, sensitivity, frequency smoothing) and the only explained one is wrong.

Wow! I am 60 videos into YT and I used to use this incorrectly to remove 'silence' from my audio, and i used to cut out the background noise and breathing manually by fading in/out every segment between speech. This has cut my work down by alot, thank you!
So I was playing around with the slider for Noise Reduction and noticed that at 0 the background noise remain unchanged, and at 48, the background noise completely disappeared. Around 1:22 you talk about how the lower the value, the more the background noise will be reduced, and the higher the value, the more prominent the background noise will be. I believe it's the opposite, as in the higher the value, the more the background noise will reduce.

I've always found the spectegram especially helpful when finding "nice silence" to sample... I've used it to tune out a persistent bird call by my window while recording a DnD game.

He says in the video at 1:38 "The further left you slide that slider the more that is reduced." All the way left is 0.

I'm having trouble. I'm doing everything shown here. and the background noise I'm trying to remove is my PC fans. but the noise still remains there.
+Zarikar gaming Some noises just cannot be removed due to the nature of them. Most noises can be reduced but not totally eliminated.
I guess you should record some silent moments before every video this will help audacity to differentiate between noise and rest of the recording
Thats because you have to do the the opposite of what the guy recommended you should take the noise reduction nob to the right not the left. Try it again with that in mind.

Apperentally I recorded something on my computer and I used elgato sound capture to only record the music coming from my computer.
So I didnt want my microphone to be picked up at all right.
But now I can hear myself in the background of all the audio and I just wanted to know if there is a way that I can remove that dumb microphone audio from the video, and just have the straight up pc audio? because apperentally sound capture somehow recorded audio out of my microphone, when it was only supposed to record out of my pc. There was only an option for my speakers, not my microphone

This gets rid of the sound but turns your voice into a robot.

It's all about finding the right balance between noise reduction and robot voice. I set it at 10db and it was the sweet spot I think.

How to remove background noise!
1. buy a mic
And more so, a dynamic mic. Condenser mics are great, but they pick up EVERYTHING. And thus you end up battling unwanted noises.
just a tip. after recording you can hit ctrl+r and it will automatically remove the noise. I'm not sure if this would produce bad quality sound by skipping the steps to get the noise profile. But it works pretty good for me, probably depends on the noise. I'm using Windows 10 btw.

when you use the noise profile will it remove the background noise from just the area you selected or from your vocals as well?

I tried the stuff you talked abut at the beginning of a home made audio CD adn it worked, but the entire audio CD needs background oise removed if possible. I selected the entire recording the second time, after I cut out an unnecessary introduction, but now it won't show the noise reduction to select it.
May you tell how you animated the "Tip of the week " in the beginning?

Thanks Dusty! I've been trying to figure this out for a while and it worked like a charm. Very easy tutorial to follow, thank you. Except! To Rob Fowler, you're correct, sliding the bar all the way up to 48 db (all the way to the right) drops all the hiss in the background, but then you can tell that the voice might start sounding a little bit robotic, so in that case maybe set it to like 45 or 40? This is such an awesome trick!

The noise I have is on the words, it's like a static on some of the words so I can not select just the noise. Why is the static there some of the time but not always? How can I remove the static when it is on the words? Thank you so much for your help!
When ever I try to do that it, removes all my audio. I have the noise reduction settings at the default.

I have a Morse code I'm trying to decrypt and in the audio file, I get both the clicks from the radio and the tones of the actual code. The problem is, both so bad start simultaneously and I can't filter out the clicks to amplify the beeps so I can have a clean message

I just experimented with an interview in a cafe thinking it would give me good atmospheric sound but I was wrong and now I want to increase the two main voices and reduce the voices and noise in the background at the cafe. I don't have any noise with just the background, well I could have a few seconds maybe, or one second possibly! Can you suggest what I could do?

Hi, so I have this audio file from an unreleased song that you can only find in an episode of my fav show as background music and I managed to get the people who were talking out of the file but the volume is still slightly uneven and there's an audience clearly screaming and making sounds all throughout the song. Is there anyone who can remove those noises and maybe even out the volume a little? I could email the track to you as an mp3 or audacity file... I just really want this song in my playlist and it's nowhere to be found on the entire internet :)
i have a cherry mx blue keyboard, and they're very noisy i want to remove this sound because when i record all you hear is annoying little clicks on the keyboard, if i do this with the keyboard sound will it erase it from all my future recordings or will i have to do this every time i make a video?
Hi Dusty, thank you so much for explaining about the noise reduction on your video and for this reason I wanted to ask for your advice as I am getting an Electrical humming noise fro my Hi Fi. Let me first explain what I am trying to do and maybe then you will have a better idea. I am in the process of transferring all of my old cassettes and Minidiscs into mp3 by recording them on my iMac desktop and using the Audacity software to convert the signal to digital but I keep getting this Electrical humming noise from my HiFI just before any music starts. It only happens when I use the cassette player or the Minidisc and the noise is reduced if I lower the HiFi volume but if I lower the volume too much then the actual recoding levels will also be reduced at playback. I have tried various ways to reduce this humming noise by changing the volume levels on the Audacity when recording but it has not made much difference so after I saw your video I was wondering if you had any bright ideas for me trying to remove that background and very annoying humming sound. I have recorded a conversation with someone in a busy city centre with my digital voice recorder, and there is lots of background noise including people walking past and conversations etc. My problem is when i try and get a noise profile to remove in audacity its inevitably picking up background voices and it never sounds clear when i chose noise reduction, when what i actually want to keep and make clearer is the voice in front of me and the conversation im having with them. Maybe im doing something wrong ?

What if the bg noise is captured while using a noise gate? Would I simply sample the tail off before it recloses and apply to file?
