    Nestled in the lap of Eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is a gift of Nature. The gigantic mountains, wooded hillside, verdant valleys, torrential rivers, pleasant climes and friendly locals can clearly rejuvenates any weary soul. The state with deep ecological ethos is India’s first fully organic state. The more we delved into its scenic grandeur, the more curious we became about its food traditions. Finally after a long wait we embarked on a gastronomic journey across the state. For this expedition, we were super elated to collaborate a brilliant travel and tour company Our Guest.in. For the Gangtok leg of the journey we were joined by two amazing hosts from Our Guest team, Prerna and Abigail.
    Since Gangtok is the starting point of most of the expeditions in Sikkim, we commenced our food tour from here itself. On reaching here the city welcomes you with its clean, pedestrian friendly, cosmopolitan appearance. Bracing ourselves for the mercurial weather condition, we began our tour with a visit to the DIRECTORATE OF HANDICRAFT & HANDLOOM, the center that preserve and promote the state’s traditional arts and crafts. There was so much to see and buy. From there we went to M G Marg, which is the city most happening place. It is the main shopping hub in the city that is lined with quaint restaurants serving some amazing dishes. Our first stop here was The Local Cafe. Its cosy setting was brimming with people and irresistible aroma. The food here was clearly influenced by the traditional flavours. We loved their Tibetan Sandwich, Aloo Dum and Gorkha Pizza. All of them had some quintessential elements of the eclectic native cuisine.
    Next we popped up a paan from Dukhi Pan shop and moved ahead to try the iconic snacks Aloo Chura at Chachaji shop. He aloo chura is legendary.
    Our next stop was the organic vegetable market Lal Bazaar. Prerna introduced us to some of the popular local veggies. It was a delightful place. From there we went to Baker’s Cafe. Their Lemon Madeleine, Irish Coffee and Blueberry crumble were great. The penultimate stop was another favourite place Nimtho. And the last destination was Abigail’s home where we tried a scrumptious spread of some signature Korean dishes that is part of her kitchen to table start up EYHO' menu. Hope you enjoy the video.

    • @Rebelass74
      @Rebelass74 Před 3 lety +2

      @@kunzangbhutia9952 I’m sorry but I’ve to disagree with you my friend.
      Sikkim was originally inhabited by Tibetan related ethnic groups like the Lepchas and Bhutias. There were also some Nepali tribe like the Limbus. Sikkim has a very interesting history and the culture was undoubtedly similar to the Tibetans.
      But throughout the 19th and 20th century, due to British preference and encouragement, substantial amount of Nepali population migrated to Sikkim and subsequently changed the landscape and culture of the state. I believe the Nepali ethnic groups make up 62% of the population now.
      One of the major factor in the cultural change is due to Nepali language becoming the de facto, lingua franca of the state. Everyone speaks Nepali and most of the Tibetan related ethnic groups have also adopted the Nepali culture.
      For example, when I grew up in the British army camp in Hong Kong, I had some friends whose father had joined from Sikkim and the surrounding areas. Their name sounded foreign to us like Zigmey, Tsewang, Namgyal, Wangchuk etc. All lamas and Bhutias like yourself.
      They were all proud of their Tibetan roots but they were culturally, without doubt, 100% Nepali. Their mother tongue was Nepali (spoke better than me and in nicer purbeli accent), their staple diet was dahl-bhat and Nepali style curries, they happily joined and celebrated Dashera and Tihar. They were quintessentially Nepali and would definitely relate and identify with the Nepali communities over their Tibetan brethren from Tibet.
      The very fact Sikkimese can join the Gurkhas is due to them being culturally Nepali. Only people with Nepali ethnic background are allowed to join in India and the UK.
      So you are right in the fact that Sikkimese culture was originally Tibetan and the state is very diverse with different ethnicities like Lepchas, Bhutias, Nepali, Bihari, Bengalis and many others but today, it is very much culturally Nepali.🙏🏼

    In Taste of Tibet, I had a similar experience when I visited Gangtok. Anyone who is visiting that place should think of some other better place.
    I would recommend trying the Dhaba food. one them which I stoped was selling only 6 items. I Ordered some Sikkim chicken curry along with steamed brown rice, that was heavenly.

    To all the people who think that sikkim was a part of nepal ,it's absolutely wrong .It used to be a seperate kingdom, and since it shares it border with other countries like Nepal,Tibet and Bhutan the food is quite similar to theirs like emadachi ,champa,sel roti etc and apart from nepali we have two more common traditional communities of Bhutias and Lepchas
    Dedicated to all the people who write comments without even knowing things ,and speaking nepali doesn't mean we belong to Nepal. e.g. just like bengali is spoken in both West Bengal and Bangladesh doesn't mean they are Bangladeshis. Bruh
