    I love Kunark! I think people don't realize that expansion packs weren't really the norm at the time, mostly just big updates/patches, so Kunark was a very special event. PCs were so slow that the moving trees caused so many problems! I will always love classic EQ and Kunark the best, because there just weren't games like this at the time and they were so ground breaking. I miss the days of DL being camped so hard that the area around KC was divided up into sections and it was hard to find pulls with all of the competition. So much nostalgia.

      That's true! Is completely forgotten. I got my start in Ultima online and I dont remember any expansions while I played it just updates. I know they came in later and added some but eq is definitely still the king of expansions. Very interesting stuff about the trees too! Thank you so much for sharing.

    Started EQ as an Iksar SK when Kunark was about 6 months old. Mostly did Field of Bone the first 10 levels, with some forays into Lake of Ill Omen and Swamp of No Hope. In the teens spent a lot of time in Kurns Tower, although I also hunted in Warsliks Woods, and did the SK raider quest in SoNH. Even hunted some at the mud hole on the east side of the Overthere. 20’s were largely LOIO and Frontier Mountain giant fort. 30’s was Overthere. 40’s was mainly Dreadlands and Karnors Castle, sometimes City of Mist. 50’s, well, Velious was out but I still hunted in Skyfirs and Chardok a lot. All these zones were full of groups back then.

      Thank you for sharing! Lake of I'll omen has a special place in my nostalgic memories along side the ot and com. I think you and I started around the same time. I can still remember how crazy it was getting off the boat in the overthere at about lvl 14 and trying to solo near the outpost. All the new kunark models.

    Really happy to see Kunark, lots of places to explore and dungeons to crawl. However, for me the best expansion ever remains Velious

    Lore wise POP was amazing tho. It bought the lore of the Gods. Something most ppl didn't care about in the booklet lol
    But that was it. It killed alot of charm the game originally had. Any type of Adventuring felt like a errand run chore rather than a adventure. Boats lost their charm... it really was POP that took away alot of the classic EQ experience

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  Před 3 lety +1

      I go back and forth on this. It definitely shrunk the world and consolidated people which had a detrimental impact on the discovery aspect of the game but it did speed up some at a time when I had less free time. It's impossible to ignore the impact it had on the exploration and feeling of being in just a huge world the game had before.

    • @gukyou5223
      @gukyou5223 Před 3 lety +1

      Definitely. POP definitely was one of the 1st gaming experiences where it felt like there was a greater fear bigger then what you ever seen before, going on and you can only be such and such level to experience it. It made you want to grind harder, gear up and skill up. It was where the elite players hung out at. Zoning into the POK and seeing high level characters after adventuring around newbie zones was motivation to keep going.
      It definitely had a purpose at one point

    • @gukyou5223
      @gukyou5223 Před 3 lety +1

      POP had some great loot also.
      It was a well packaged expansion for the way EQ was running at the time. With being at the peak of it's popularity. It was pushing the agenda for players to socialize even more now because now we got a expansion strictly for raids
      Now, alot of it's charm is gone due to lack of players logging in and the charm directed towards the more classic material because its solo friendly

    SoL would be the "what the hell ?" Expansion that went over most ppls heads.
    I just think POP was the death of EQ.
    It also didn't stay it's welcome because some of them POP zones are a bitch to adventure in without a group. Those zones pretty much died with EQ....and the classic zone got popular again because you can solo in them, if you know how to play your class

  • @gukyou5223
    @gukyou5223 Před 3 lety +1

    I think EQ had 4 good expansions.
    Classic, ROK, SOV and that froglok one.
    POP was the gift and curse of EQ. While it bought cool endgame content. *truthfully POP was the expansion that put a fork in EQ* .... it became all about the planes and the rush to get there. Most ppl checked out at level 30 sum and never made it to the planes because of the corpse run

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  Před 3 lety

      I definitely see what you're saying about PoP. I really enjoyed that expansion but it did probably make the most substantial changes to EQ that have persisted outside of perhaps the bazaar (and now AOCs).
      There are some later expansions that shine for different reasons (good lore, good leveling experience, good raids...etc.) but it's hard to beat the original game with the original teams. The launch of both Velious and Luclin in era was so much fun!

    Really looking forward to Kunark, I started in classic but didnt get close to 50 in that expansion. I didnt even hit 60 in kunark haha, but I have a lot of memories from Kunark. Le el 44 and 43 on Thornblade atm, REALLY hope to hit 50 before kunark, doubtful, but possible

    Karnors was great 48-54, in fact on mischief I went back to karnors with monk/druid duo from 58-60 and camped Warlord/pawbuster room (and made some serious cash selling Metal pipes after I got one for my monk :P).

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  Před 2 lety

      Nice! I tended to avoid karnors because of the faction issues as I was almost always an evil race/class but that's very good to know.

    Hi, thanks for this. Do you have any views on Kaesora for 30 - 40?

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  Před 3 lety

      Hi! Thank you for your comment. I think kaesora could be a lot of fun, similar to howling stones and even crypt of dalnir. It may not be the most rewarding experience per hour but it could still make some very fun memories. You will certainly have some people in there trying to get the vp key. Xalgoz will be interesting if the fang for the Hs key is randomized. I remember kaesora being a very vertical zone but the area near xalgoz was solid.

    Nice video. I don't know why people like Chardok on TLPs, especially for pick up groups. It's annoying and difficult to get to deep Chardok camps without a mage with call of the hero. Sebilis is so much easier in that regard.

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much!
      I think chardok is often because of the spawn rate and the absolute highest level mobs down at the bottom. Both seb and chardok have gear worth getting. I think seb might be a bit more forgiving for a pickup group.

  • @JonathonTheAsshole
    @JonathonTheAsshole Před rokem +1

    Kunark was the best expansion but man 55 was rough and the DGAF attitude they took with the dungeons where half of them had invisible death trap gimmicks or one way enterances. So much less accessible and "unfair" than classic or Velious. Also everything needed a quested key and/or max level lock picking via rogue which didn't evist since they sucked and most people had stopped playing them along with rangers.

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  Před rokem

      I think kunark could have done with another top end dungeon. Maybe if karnors had been better exp and didn't wreck evil faction
