- Whittier, Alaska, is a unique town where nearly all residents live under one roof in the Begich Towers. This incredible building houses a post office, school, grocery store, and more, providing everything the community needs. Whittier is accessible through a single tunnel that opens at 5:30AM and closes at 11:15PM(summer schedule), sealing the town from the rest of Alaska overnight. Join me as I explore the fascinating life in this extraordinary town, accessible by one way in and one way out.
Hope you enjoyed the video. I’m not a documentarian. I just filmed a small town through my eyes. A lot of people have visited this town and since I’m in Alaska, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to visit this town as well. Thanks for your continued support. It means the world to me.
Thanks for your continued awesome content, I have traveled more with u than I have in my 55yrs of life💪🏾🙏🏾. You are a blessing and an inspiration.
@@d3sir3m3thank you for always supporting me 😊
Beautiful ❤
Whew NOMI I'm glad you posted I've been praying for your safety
I love how you are always respectful of other people’s culture etc ….it speaks volume of how you were raised God Bless you …
My father helped build the building in Whittier, thank you for helping me visit.
I like that you are so respectful of others when you travel.
Amen🎉
How else is someone supposed to act when they're not from the area? lol
Some people can go anywhere in the world, no problem. Then there are those who can't go across town without having issues.
I can’t help but notice how relaxed you are compared to the small town in Idaho. Alaskans are super friendly, and we help each other out.
Alaskans are so chill and laid-back. I’m definitely enjoying my time here in Alaska. I love it.
Great video
I'm not sure if we all lived in the same Alaska
I arrived in Anchorage at 19 and stayed for 29 years and 2 days. Yep, people are A LOT different in the lower 48.
I love your life ❤️ I'm 62 and I wish I could do it but I'm taking care of my mom she's 83 with dementia 😢. I'll keep watching your great videos ❤️
❤❤❤
Start planning and prepping now. Once she transitions, you'll be ready to go. Grieving on the road, making peace with God and seeing this beautiful country is much better than sitting at home grieving. Trust me. 💛🌻
I'm 69 but I don't take care of anyone like you, that's tough, I'm praying for your mother..
I’m going thru the same thing also but I’m 59 and my mom is 87, will be 88 next month in August.
@@tinaclark2729same, and I just turned 59 & mom will be 83 in August
That drive was GORGEOUS. God is an amazing, master artist!!! 😍
Amen 🙏🏽
OMG, that opening scene and explanation in your narrative voice…. Is everything! These vids just keep elevating! Well done, and thank you for bringing this to us again! Loving these episodes! This was such an interesting and informative video.
MsKimko 32 I totally agree with you
Me too!!❤❤
Yep...I love Nomi she has a way with words❣️
A rare quality to be a considerate vlogger. Easy decision to follow.
I put myself in their shoes. I wouldn’t want somebody filming while I’m trying to just relax and live my everyday life.
I love how you share without compromising other people’s privacy ❤
You don't know how happy I was to come across your Channel😊 it is so good to see a black woman exploring out and about. I look forward to watching many more videos and by the way you are excellent at providing commentary🎉
Thank you so much for giving us this experience. I never knew this place ever existed. You have no idea how much you helped me see the world because I don't have the money to travel , you are my eyes and ears through the world I am 24 years old and I'm all the way in Chicago. Wishing you best of luck and to be safe please ♥️🥺
💙
Same. I love seeing what she shares along her journey to places I'd never visit or heard of. It does gives me ideas for future travel plans. As always safe travels 🥰
The Whittier tunnel was built by the military and finished in the 1940s. During the Cold War, it was meant to be a base of operations in the event of a nuclear attack. The military had special high tech training cars built just for that purpose. I remember, in the early 90s, I read an article about the military trying to sell the train cars because nuclear treat was diminished. Another fun fact, Portage was an actual town on the highway side of the mountains. It was destroyed in the earthquake of 1964.
I didn't know that...thanks for sharing
Okay girl. Thank you for educating us! I love it. ❤
Thanks for the information peace
Nice2 learned something everyday wow! bless u.
Wow you know stuff great information!
As a Marine a defensive instructor I have to give you props for being as brave as you are. I have Subaru Outback back and haven’t had the guts to do this yet.
I just saw a video about them. That is so amazing. I’m praying for your protection as you travel alone.
Your genuine enthusiasm and zest for life is what makes your documentation captivating.
Thank you for taking us along on that journey. Thank you for being so considerate of others im sure that was appreciated. Be safe .
You are so welcome!
Brings back memories of my time stationed in Alaska when I served in the Army ❤ I am now 70 so it was a long time ago 😂 Thank you for sharing your travels makes me smile a lot ❤
I as well of my days in military! Lol ugh. ❤
Thank You for Your Service Sir.
70 years young! Army woo ahhh
I appreciate your attention to their personal space. It's their home. It was very kind of you😊.
Welcome to Alaska! I am long time resident of Anchorage and Palmer and have a Newmar Baystar and have been camping and RVing since the 70’s. Your introduction to Whittier is very suited for this amazing town.
As a black man i did not know there was black people in Alaska doing outdoor shyt in the cold lol. Do yo thang my sista. Good video
Black people are then Indigenous people of the world. We are everywhere. We were here first and will be here last!!!
@@aminaisrael7657more people need to know all humans came from Africa.
@@aminaisrael7657unfortunately most ppl won't truly understand your comment.
It’s def more white people here. Growing up I barely had any black role models 😩 When I’d have a black doctor it was like a unicorn. Still kinda the same really but since we have so many people moving here “to start a new life” and soldiers with their families, we are getting more diverse.
Odd comment...
Whittier
A hub / jumping off point during the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 1989 response.
Begich is pronounced "bay gitch".
Reindeer are domestic caribou.
Antlers have velvet on them, male and female have antlers.
I saw this town featured in a news documentary a few years ago. They actually were able to speak to residents in their homes.
I saw that too
I saw that too
I saw the same documentary
I watched that video too. That was after I read a novel that takes place is Whittier. Its called "Memories in the Drift" by Melissa Payne.
22:00 she looks like lil dirk
Bro I saw a documentary about that town! A old couple are like the superintendents, they own their apartment in there. The WHOLE TOWN is in one building. This was amazing!! I wrote this before watching it. I'm hype.
I have been watching since your first video! What an interesting town! I love when you said “Fudge will take you out.” Laughed so hard. Thank you for making these beautiful and peaceful videos!
I’m telling you fudge will take you out, you gotta protect your throat at all cost. 😂😂😂😂
@@Nomadicintrovert😂😂😂😂💀💀
@@NomadicintrovertNomi & her dramatics 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Fudge is one of those things you take a couple nibbles and it satisfies your sweet tooth yet u won't overdo it since it's so rich.
Phenomenal video, felt like I was there with you. People can we promote this channel and get her to 1 million subscribers, I personally think its one of the best travel channels on CZcams

I have been to Whittier about four times. It is a very unique town. I have also been to the same fudge place and restaurant. Good stuff.
If you are still in Alaska in August, go to the state fair, you won’t regret it.
Anticipation of your adventures has become a regular experience. Thanks again. Have a wonderful day.
My sister and her wife are also running around vanlifing in Alaska right now. Seems fabulous.
Peter Santanello did an in depth tour of the building and interview of the residents several years ago
I watched that it was a good vlog
I think that’s the vlog I watched!
Yes, it was excellent..
Thank you for sharing places that I may never go. I am enjoying the ride along.😊
You have never smiled as much as you smiled in this video. Seems like you truly enjoyed your exploration. Thanks for sharing.
Up having coffee and watching Nomi, what a great start to my day. Thanks for sharing❤
I was in anchorage 2 weeks ago and I could not believe my eyes driving on that highway. Alaska is so beautiful. I tried to go to whitter but I got nervous about the tunnel lol.
“I just didn’t want to invade their privacy.” You are so kind and considerate! Love your voice!
Thank you for showing us the building I have seen this building on line today just looking,so thank you so much for this opportunity I feel like I’m there with you Thanks again ❤😊
That deer was in what they call velvet. They shed their antlers every year. Thats how the new ones come in and the deer rub them on trees or whatever to get the velvet off.❤
Nomi , I'm so glad you're exploring this. I heard about this town years ago where everyone lives and thrives under one roof. Thank you for sharing. So excited!! 🧡🌺
I so appreciate your thoughtfulness, respect and consideration of others this is indeed rare for someone so young. That being said so far you have won me over and I have just subscribed. 🙂😊
Worked and lived there for a summer deckhanding on a charter boat. Ill tell u now, its beautiful. U missed a lot of amazing spots. By the tunnel on whittier side is a road that leads to a trail up a mountain. As well as old bomb shelters. If theres hikers out there, goto whittiers horsetail falls trail or portage pass. Its mind blowing.
Girl, you forgot to give us the first bite of that delicious seafood you had,oh,boy😂😂😂
No, I didn’t! I was being greedy 😢

Thank God there's light at the end of the tunnel! I so enjoyed this adventure, love tiny town, but Whittier Alaska is like no other. The shrimp may have been just as delish however your crunchy meal sounded scrumptious. YUM!
ENJOY YOUR STAY IN ALASKA!❤️
I saw a video a few years ago about this town, building in Whittier. Thanks for sharing your adventures❣️
Hello Nomi I hope your are having fun, beautiful country, very relaxing
Really admire your confidence and zeal for life. Stay safe and be blessed 😊
I surprised my husband for his birthday in 2019 with a trip to Whittier. We did the glacier boat tour. I saw Grizzlies and Huge Otters and drank a glacier margarita made from glacier ice. It was rainy and cold even in August but we loved it. It was the FINAL of the United States states that I hadn’t been to. I like what you explored there. We went to some of the same places you did, but never did get to see inside Begich Towers. Thanks for sharing that with us.
I went on the glacier tour in May, one of the best days of my life
Like always this was a video where I felt I was there myself. It was awesome experience and can't thank you enough.
Alaska is definitely one of a kind! Lived here for 3 years now and can say for anyone who’s never been here it is not what you expect!
16:17 love seeing you happy!!!
I took the Alaska Marine (Highway) ferry from Bellingham WA to Juneau then got onto another ferry from Juneau to Whittier. I got off the ferry with my truck then drove home to Anchorage. It was an awesome experience!
Cool video! The tunnel shared with train tracks would be the craziest for me😂
And the length!! I would be freaking out!!!
That is a long tunnel 😒
Very cool ! But we have these all over now we call them senior living! They now have movie theatres, salons, barbers, grocery stores ect …
Wow, interesting place. Rain is so comforting... and annoying at the same time.
I really enjoyed this video…I like them all, but something about this one! I love how you are so respectful of others while filming🤗 continued blessings from God🙏
Thanks for taking me along I really enjoyed the trip❤❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing the joy that shines on your face as you explore the wonders of Alaska! So much fun to share that joy!

Thanks again for sharing. I have seen others travel to this city, however you were the first one have seen go inside. I commend your bravery and commitment to sharing your experiences. You are getting better with your commentaries as time goes on and that’s a joy to see. You can tell by the comments that we are creatures of habit and do like the option to take the first bite or not. Safe travels and carry on.

Very interesting, I like the history of the building and the town. The driving tunnel and walking tunnel were cool and scary at the same time. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for the history and the tour.
This town is definitely on my bucket list! I have watched so many videos of this town glad to explore it through your eyes 💙
This is one of your best videos! Well done. Gorgeous area, loved seeing the tunnels, and have long been curious about that building that houses almost all the residents.
Whittier is so interesting! I guess that is a place where all the residents woukd have to semi get along. Thank you for being so respectful of others!
