Keep the engine original. Only do what is necessary to get it to run safely and reliably, and stop the rot.
No Rat-Rodding, Please restore her to her vintage beauty!
Have someone pull you and put it in second and pop the clutch a little and it'll probably come loose since you already got lube in the cylinders if it's been soaking a week you sure aren't going to hurt it pulling it trying to get the engine loose
Make it a reliable driver
Keep the original engine patch up body 👌
Hell yeah!
It's a runner for sure!
Get a milk crate to sit on and take it for a spin!
If you watch the next video after this, you'll see that I may have to use a milk crate!
@@madgingercustoms I seen it! LOL
Nancy's guy Frank here.... KEEP the Flat Head!... Make the old car a "yard runner", and practice body work... weld in metal... etc. A fun old car to kick around with. Love it.
I like all those suggestions!
That flathead deserves some love. Would like to see this car fixed up and put back on the road. Install a dual exhaust with glasspack mufflers and listen to some music.
This seems to be what people want to see. I'll do my best.
Don’t forget to pour oil the the glass packs to burn them out so they sound good!
I grew up with Ford flatheads. I'd love to see it running as a rat rod. It's amazing how a motor that's been sitting for half a century starts up and kinda runs....Great job Dave!
Hi Stephen how are you doing. Hope you had a good day. I’m from Minnesota and I’m looking for a new friend if you don’t mind 😊
Not gonna lie. There was 14 hours of footage. It was a struggle.
Well done, that was really stuck and I didn`t think you were going to free it but you got there.
You and me both. I worked to free it up for 2 days. There is 14+ hours of video footage lol.
Keep that beauty original!!💗💗
Awesome Job Dave!!! Still can’t believe it fired up after that many years!!! Glad I was there to see it run!!! Can’t wait to see the progress through
Glad you stopped by!!
Use a Ford 390 engine
I'll be 78 in April. My very first car was a 1950 business coup. I bought it from an uncle who owned a service station for $35.00 when l was 15 years old. It was a V8 flat head, three on the tree just like the one you're working on. I loved that car. I wish I still had it. And it was fast too. And my duel exhaust with no mufflers sounded amazing 😍🤩
So you are voting for no mufflers!!! I like it. Hope we can entertain you!
Run the flatty.
I would keep that 8ba flathead and get it running properly. Would make a cool old cruiser !!!
That's the plan. Just pulled the carb. Will pull heads shortly.
Gotta say I'm impressed! You're Eureka moment when it finally quit fighting and rolled over for you was priceless! Loved the fact that you didn't give up and got the thing to run, and you didn't seem to lose your cool. Great content, I'd love to see this engine restored to it's former limp glory, but understand your thoughts about re-powering it too. I'm based in New Zealand and even the "gem" you're working on is worth my left kidney here, just to give you some perspective on what it's worth down under. Keep the content coming!!
I appreciate the kind words!! It's still an uphill battle but we're in it now. Uploading the new video now........is it even worth fixing up?
@@madgingercustoms -Herculean task to rebuild it for sure, but it would make great content! : )
Awesome job never give up unless it's a lost cause you did the right thing letting it soak a week instead of busting the rings
So exciting!!! Glad you didn't pop your hernia back out.... Can't wait to clean up the inside of this thing it's gonna be a blast!
I think its going to be cool.
Give it some love, keep it original, fix the rust, do the body and paint !
I agree!
Love this, I drove a 51 tudor sedan to high school
A buddy of mine inherited one of those from his grandma when we were in high school. We had a blast in that thing!
Thanks for checking it out!
The 1950 Ford is a great car!!! Owned one in 1954, which got 21 mpg on the highway with overdrive. It always 'used' oil so had to check it always. Just commenting.
My first car was a 51 Ford back in 57. W/O looking it up, the firing order is 1,5,4,8,6,3,7,2 !! I rebuilt many flatheads back in the day.
****me writing that down*** thanks!!! Please subscribe. You could be the wealth of knowledge I need!!!
My absolute favorite whip, sooooooo rad
That flathead has proven it's worth. I say fix it up, whether stock or a bit of a classic flathead hot rod. The old girl wants to live, and it'd be way cooler than an LS in my opinion.
We're giving it a go!
30:57 Peg Bundy never said those words! LOL
Flathead all the way
That seems to the consensus!
Keep and save the flathead. Fix the rust but preserve and maintain as much original car as you can. Het it running and driving, savely and reliably. Replace the interiour!
I think this is the plan, yes.
I bought a 51ford in 1963 Jr in high school for 50 dollars from my friends grandfather I drove it till I went in the military in Oct. of 65. It run like a clock. I sold it and made money on it did a paint job on it. Put a crossover pipe on it and fuel pump. Wish I had it still. I'm 76 better than any new car I had. Love to see it stock an running. Good luck Eddie.
If you decide to engine swap or body swap I would like to have the old flat head!
I'll keep you in mind!
Sweet rod. I had a '51 (rat rodded it) i kept the flatty in it....i changed the plugs, wires, swapped a peteonix in the distributer and it fired right up and the timing was still right on.
Great job Dave! Looking forward to seeing the progress!
love hearing run again!
I'm hoping to get it running well. Subscribe and stay tuned!
Love the "let it marinate" part of getting the engine prepped, lol. I see the car is from Connecticut, I just a bought a 49 Shoebox from Brookfield CT last week and towed it 80 miles back to Massachusetts. Working on getting it running as well and just shot my first video for it too. Keep up the good work on getting it running, I'm about to check out your other progress videos now. 🤘
Worth every second!!
I’m late to the show here, but I’m with the majority on keeping the flathead.
That is the plan as of right now.
Well done getting that back to life 👍👌
See ya on next instalment
Ok, so I just watched the rest of the video, and congrats on gettin' the old girl to run ! I will give you the benefit of the doubt and subscribe and like, but that means I'll be watching to see if you ruin it by the terd swap or keep the flathead. You asked everyone to tell you what we thought you should do, so you know my answer-----KEEP THE FLATHEAD !!!!
That's the plan. I'm going to compression test it this week and hopefully get the heads off and get some valves unstuck!
Success! Onward!
Yessir very nice work your doing Jim, I’m loving watching the progress. 👍
My parents moved from North Dakota in 1950 in a 1949 Shoebox Ford.
I have a 1950 Ford Shoebox! It was my dads and he bought it turn key race car out of Oklahoma and had it shipped back home here in Tennessee in 2007! Took it to the track and was about to do his burnout and it died and had to be pushed back to the pits by some of the racers and a guy pushing on the trunk said when he got stopped said he'd bet it would run so dad tried it and it started right up? Dude said as he was pushing he heard something click and he bet it was the 12 braker to the fuel pump and he was right! But it embarrassed the ol'man and never took it back again ? I think he had drove it in a couple Paradis and only put about 200 miles on it. I got it in 2011 and drove it maybe 600+ and it hadn't been started since 2017 like a dumbass! But I'm 60 and not in the best health Sooooo....... yea but the shop that built it was called Shoebox and they are good at it! Because it had 2 kit on a all steal 388 strocker auto full cage tubed 4link and drives lik its on rails! The only thing on it Ford is the body a rearend I think it weighed around 3000lbs and its frogman scarry QUICK and it will brake traction at some as you mash it! Any way this how I got here and I felt like I had to tell you about it , and you got a new sub thanks for reading this far! GOD Bless you and yours!
This is an amazing story. Thanks for sharing it with us. Hope you're subscribed!
I think it would be great just to clean it up, its nice original
Please! Keep this old classic Ford as original as you can. Too much junk on the roads already and this needs saving!
Love to see it going!
I may work on it more this weekend.
Definitely had me laughing. Very entertaining, great sense of humor, patience and persistence. Congratulations and keep going on this one.
Awesome!
Frikin loved this vid!! Keep goin with it!! And keep making videos. I laughed out loud on a plane several times watching this!!! A+
This one was a real surprise!! 👍👍👍👍great job!
I hope you're subscribed!
@@madgingercustoms yep😎
This was awesome!!! Can't believe it ran??
Love the car David! Very cool! 😁
Go ahead and work with the flathead, everybody can do a LS swap, few can get a Flattie running. Very impressive so far.New to channel and I'm hooked. Thanks
Much appreciated!
Best engine Ford ever built, the flat head V-8 in my opinion. W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
We'll see tomorrow! Recording the last part of me fighting this engine. Win or lose tomorrow.
Congratulations on getting the old ford running.
GOOD JOB, DAVE
Awesome. Thank you.
You win for most viewed MGC videos today! Lol. Thanks!
Just trying to catch up on my learning @@madgingercustoms 😁
Keep going with the flattie, enough la swaps already.
Subbed
Been getting a bunch of messages echoing this. Thanks!
Keep up the good work!
You're makin' it happen. Yeah The flathead lives on.
I noticed a two blade fan on that Ford. I remember my dad talking about how bad they were to overheat. I can see why with that fan. I am in Texas where it gets hot in the summer. And we don't have the rust like the north.
Great job my friend.. keep going it UP....
Mad Ginger Customs Congratulations on getting that 1950 Ford Shoebox coupe car to run with the Original flathead V8 engine in it !! Because this car deserves a second chance in life to live , and I just Subscribe to your channel so keep up the good work 😃😃💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍👍
Rebuild the Flathead and put a 5 speed behind it. It will last a long time.
Yessss, you're onto something. I saw a t5 Chevy conversion. That will work well when I turbo this flatty.
@@madgingercustoms find a vintage ital-mechica supercharger. I will give an additional 20 hp.with no other mods.
@@jeromebreeding3302 I've built custom turbo kits for years. I think I'd enjoy just building it.
@@madgingercustoms Turbo charging would be interesting for sure, but with only three main bearings don't go over-board.
@@jeromebreeding3302 noted. Thank you!!
Had some stuck valves staying open and huffing up the intake but fired enough cylinders to waken from hibernation.
Yeah check the other video. I freed them all up and she runs on 8 now.
Nice work getting it unstuck and running again , hope to see more of it ….
Hope you're subscribed! We are going to do a lot more with it
@@madgingercustoms I am
Great job. It was nice to see you not rev it to the moon. Great job and great video.
One of my favorites
The time I brought that flat head home it had clean oil ,, it sat forever...
But after I started it ran a while all the dirt set to the bottom where the dipstick wouldn't pick the dirt up , dirt will go to the bottom sometimes it will look clean until it's stirred up
Awesome David
Flat heads are small, inefficient engines. Perfect for pulling around a slammed and patinaed shoebox. Rebuilding your engine will be money well spent and half the budget for a fun fun project.
Get a friend, hook up a tow strap, get going 10 MPH, put it in first gear and pop the clutch.....
Great vid!!!! 👍👍
Awesome video Dave!
Congrats.
New to the channel, love the shoeboxes!!! Great video! Tuning in now Brotha!
We appreciate it!
Has some stuck valves . Check compression , find out which valves are stuck pull heads and unstick valves and it should run good .Keep the flathead .
Flatheads for life💪 put a S10 5 speed and a 8.8 axel 👌
Please subscribe!! I read speedway motors has the adapter for that.
Congrats on the video doing so well! I hope to have 64k one day 😃 keep the flat head !
Cool ride cant wait to see what you do with it
I'm going to let the viewers decide! Subscribe and you tell me what you think should be done.
Good job ~
I want to see the side valve V8 going, and hi from Geelong Victoria Australia I'm Ken,it will be great to see it rockin.
She's a runner. Instead of a breaker bar I would've put it in gear and rocked it first.
Yeah, I thought about dragging it around the yard. The brakes were seized though. I did free them up today and we gutted the inside.
@@madgingercustoms Gotcha. Just my thoughts. I think an LS swap would be overkill. Just from what little I've seen of it maybe drop a 302 in it with a four on the floor with some cool sounding pipes would be nice. Some decent wheels to set it off. Something you don't see often (at least not in my world) are gassers. Not sure if this car would be suited for that, but this is something interesting I think to keep in mind incase you come across something that would make a nice build. As for this one I personally would make it kind of a modified preservation. I remember these cars as a kid. Have always liked the style.
Amazing
Just got a new subscriber from Sweden.
Keep up the good work
great job mate .
I would love to see you take the flathead down, and, at least find out why it’s locked up, and, hopefully try to fix it.
It runs. It may have a stuck valve. It rotates smooth now after running it.
Subscribe and we can find it together. I'll pull the heads this week after compression testing.
I'd love to find one of those and fix it up just enough to get it on the road and drive it
Keep the flathead please I love to keep them original
You are echoing most people! Please subscribe and I'll try not to let you down.
Flatheas forever! Keep the 8BA in her.
Hi Dave,I had a 49 Ford conv. I Thought the 50 Ford had a different grill.I changed my grill plus hood so put in I thought was a 50..maybe it was a 51ford....that way that hump in the middle of the 49 was gone....
I love it good job
Cool car love to see you go forward with it, I love an LS but also love originality, a good blend to look as original as possible but able to just turn a key and enjoy the drive. Also get some sleep brother, these eyes get any darker and the raccoons are going to call you brother.
Eye bags are the norm unfortunately. Lol
Dude if you flood the hell outta the engine and it only tries to start when you hold it wide open... KEEP IT WIDE OPEN! Don't pump the gas, and for gods sake don't dump more down the intake. I'm glad you got it running doesn't even smoke too much. I don't mean to be mean but you seriously had me yelling at my phone.
Watch the compression video. You may tell more but the ending in worth it!!
I bought an old 40 Ford paint van once because it had the older flat head. It sat ever since I could remember when I got home it started and ran like a new one..
love them flat heads grew up on them.
Congrats
Thanks!! Check out the compression video where I get it going on all cylinders!!
Love the sound of Ford flat head v8. THE make an ls sound like a giant fart.
A good old Morski style engine unceasing.
Something you need to think about, in a lot of cases, a lot of these cars were parked because the newer better model came out and most people would never throw anything away back in the day.
can't believe it 😎🤔
My thought on freeing the engine would be to use the ring gear on the flywheel. The leverage is 20 times the rate verses using center crankshaft pulley mount bolt to turn the engine over.
I've seen those ring gear pullers on Mortskie. I even know if this has an inspection cover to be honest.
Me gusta el sonido que generan esos motores v8 cabeza plana Y me encanta el auto Me gustaría saber si pensas restaurarlo Saludos desde Argentina
Of course the oil looks clean. All the dirt settled to the bottom of the pan.
I have gotten an engine unstuck by putting a pipe wrench on the crank pulley, and, put a really long cheater pipe on it, and, convinced it to let go.
Of course I had to replace the pulley, but, the motor wasn’t stuck anymore.
Sometimes you need to "persuade" engines.
I have almost the exact same situation with a 49/50 Ford F5 with a Flathead V8, Mid 70's was the last time it was run. I filled the Cyls with PB-Blaster and still stuck, I felt like I was going to break the bolt off if I tried going much further, but maybe the rocking method you used would work. I'll let you know. I didn't try to get it to move anywhere near the time you spent trying either.
I have 14 hours of footage and nearly have up several times. Keep after it!!
@@madgingercustoms I'm vested in it still. Took all day to dig the truck out of the woods and get it home. I've been looking at for years in my father-in-laws old back yard, they moved and I said it was mine. Been sitting in the yard now for a little over a year now. Too cold here to go play with (-13F still), but I'll hit it in the spring. Found all the Videos online for rebuilding the Carb, and the Fuel pump, just need to get it spinning first.
Question, did you have any spark plugs freeze up on you when trying to take them out, I have one that feels like it's going to break off. It wouldn't even turn back in after I got it a half turn out. I didn't try using an impact though, that might loosen it up. Maybe I'll video it too . . .
My first car in 1965,I wish I still had it
May I suggest that you try a large pipe wrench on the crank shaft pulley ? I've seen that successfully unfreeze an engine.
Maybe on the next one!! Thanks!
