Of course, growing up in Los Angeles & then going to high school in Hawaii were among the best things that ever happened to me, I suppose. Early in life I was exposed to people from just about Everywhere. 🌏🗿
This makes me sad and reminds me of what my husband expressed when we were dating. My hubby's South Vietnamese, dark skinned, raised casually Buddhist. I'm white, fair skinned, raised culturally Jewish but religiously Christian. Our families couldn't be more different in almost all the ways, except he has a loud opinionated mom and I have a loud opinionated dad 😂 anyway, it's been over ten years and three kids in. I adore my husband and wouldn't have it any other way. We get looks since we are in the northern Midwest of the US, but it's gotten less obnoxious over time. My husband says we never would have happened unless I pursued him like I did, because he internalized the negative perception around his race so much that he didn't think anyone would find him desirable. It took him awhile to realize he wasn't being "punked" and that I actually did like him back. I like who I like and don't care what others think. Sometimes, I joke that it's the Autism. As a high functioning Autistic woman, I don't really care about social conventions and can ignore social dating conventions that are completely illogical. The only logical dating conventions for me are: 1. Similar intelligence and/or education, or at least can hold similar conversations equally well on a variety of topics 2. Similar career mindedness and income capacity, or at least a respect for each other's types of industrousness 3. Similar developmental age and power differentials; no big gaps that cause issues 4. Similar interests and values, including where you live, kids, etc. I ignore almost everything else. My husband is kind, dutiful, loves Disney, romantic, hardworking, and makes me laugh. We even found we have a lot more in common than our family backgrounds would suggest ❤

Don’t take it too personally or as racist implication. Sometimes it’s just the cultural differences between families that make things difficult. Asian families are more reserved, conservative and that could be the reason for incompatibility unless the family was more westernized.

So people use terms like fully black, monoracial black, unambiguously black to say that they are black visually, and are perceived as black by everyone they meet. Some people talk about positively about black women till you find out it’s a black woman that has to be mixed race or light skinned or with loose curls as supposed to Afro textured hair. Colorism (preference and social rewards for lighter skin tones) is prevalent in Latin America, Africa, Asia and in this case also the American black community. I remember watching a video about Japanese men and women and why Japanese women prefer white men instead of Japanese men. Aparently the dating culture over there is that everyone cheats on everyone and that even though both men and women work, women are still expected to do all the house work, all the child raising etc on top of the work. Japanese women prefer to go for western men because they want a more equal relationship (monogamous and shared responsibilities or a provider-housewife relationship where at least responsibilities are devided). Basically, if you want a traditional marriage with a traditional partner, act traditionally. Or if you want a 50/50 relationship (traditional relationships are also 50/50 unless one partner abuses the dynamic to be dominant over the other) then pull your weight, also contribute 50% in any way you can. This goes for women too, don't treat the other person badly and then expect them to pull your weight too.

Part of the problem is that we consider everyone from the Asian continent “Asian”. We used to have different names for the different rough estimate racial groups of asia. Asian / Chinaman / Jap / etc: people from China, Japan, Korea (either one), Mongolia, aka (as racist as this sounds) “white asians”. Typically light skinned with “Asian” eyes. Oriental: anyone from Thailand, Laos, The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. Again, as racist as it sounds “dark Asians”. Typically dark skinned with “Asian” eyes. Occidental / Indian: anyone from the Indian subcontinent and the parts of the Middle East that are close by. These folks are almost certainly brown and have “round” eyes. This doesn’t include the “Arabian Peninsula” - those folks were always called “A-Rabs” We got rid of these terms for the different Asian “races” because 1) they are hella racist, and 2) lumped people together that would strongly prefer to be separate such as Indians and Pakistanis. Of course Americans never knew these nuances and grouped them solely based on appearance and what Americans perceived as cultural similarities (again, often wrong).
Here’s the gag of it all. I’m a black woman and considered the least desirable type of woman to date. And I love Asian men….but the problem is is their nosy parents and family members that only want their Asian sons to date within their race. (I actually been through this personally so I can say this.) Which I understand culturally, but geez if they want their sons to be married then their parents need to be open minded of who their son dates and not be so controlling of who they fall in love with. Me I am willing to date any race as long as their treat me right.
In the US. 90% of my matches are a very specific type of white woman (pansexual/bisexual, a fan of Asian culture, or a fan of nerd culture in general, usually a Lord of the Rings type). The rest are Latinas, then black and Asian women. My luck is a LOT better in Germany, Denmark, France, and Italy tho. Also, my problem in the US is that whenever I make a connection with a girl on a date, and I take her to my place, 90% of the time she just ghosts me.

I remember watching a video about Japanese men and women and why Japanese women prefer white men instead of Japanese men. Aparently the dating culture over there is that everyone cheats on everyone and that even though both men and women work, women are still expected to do all the house work, all the child raising etc on top of the work. Japanese women prefer to go for western men because they want a more equal relationship (monogamous and shared responsibilities or a provider-housewife relationship where at least responsibilities are devided). Basically, if you want a traditional marriage with a traditional partner, act traditionally. Or if you want a 50/50 relationship (traditional relationships are also 50/50 unless one partner abuses the dynamic to be dominant over the other) then pull your weight, also contribute 50% in any way you can. This goes for women too, don't treat the other person badly and then expect them to pull your weight too.

Part of the problem is that we consider everyone from the Asian continent “Asian”.
We used to have different names for the different rough estimate racial groups of asia.
Asian / Chinaman / Jap / etc: people from China, Japan, Korea (either one), Mongolia, aka (as racist as this sounds) “white asians”. Typically light skinned with “Asian” eyes.
Oriental: anyone from Thailand, Laos, The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. Again, as racist as it sounds “dark Asians”. Typically dark skinned with “Asian” eyes.
Occidental / Indian: anyone from the Indian subcontinent and the parts of the Middle East that are close by. These folks are almost certainly brown and have “round” eyes. This doesn’t include the “Arabian Peninsula” - those folks were always called “A-Rabs”
We got rid of these terms for the different Asian “races” because 1) they are hella racist, and 2) lumped people together that would strongly prefer to be separate such as Indians and Pakistanis. Of course Americans never knew these nuances and grouped them solely based on appearance and what Americans perceived as cultural similarities (again, often wrong).

Here’s the gag of it all. I’m a black woman and considered the least desirable type of woman to date. And I love Asian men….but the problem is is their nosy parents and family members that only want their Asian sons to date within their race. (I actually been through this personally so I can say this.) Which I understand culturally, but geez if they want their sons to be married then their parents need to be open minded of who their son dates and not be so controlling of who they fall in love with. Me I am willing to date any race as long as their treat me right.
In the US. 90% of my matches are a very specific type of white woman (pansexual/bisexual, a fan of Asian culture, or a fan of nerd culture in general, usually a Lord of the Rings type).
The rest are Latinas, then black and Asian women.
My luck is a LOT better in Germany, Denmark, France, and Italy tho.
