It’s called an Anorak because it’s named after the original Eskimo garment that was a hoody pullover used as a rain jacket. Anorak comes from the Eskimo word: Anoraq. It’s named appropriately, and shows respect for the garments origins.
If you show respect to the origins, please don't call them Eskimo, thank you!
Hi Troy, thanks for the info. It's just a shame that the word anorak has such nerdy connotations here in the UK. No disrespect intended. Paul.
anorak is something you get from Woolworths, a type of torture device for children in the 1970's and 80's.
This is a must for travel kit, fits in my carry on and when the plane gets cold it keeps me nice and cozy.....
Love Anoraks.
Thousands of years of Inuit success can't be wrong.
Nice review. I just received this anorak and agree with your points. :)
I hope you enjoy using your new SL Anorak, and thanks for watching. Paul.
Love!!! Atom is a must-have! Hoody, LT, Anorak, SL...
Bony Bird Love, Paul!!! ♥️😄
You knows it! Thanks for watching. Paul.
I've tried the jacket and anorak. The jacket is a slim fit and just about right, but I found the anorak even slimmer - unnecessarily so in my opinion. Also, the jacket is so light that saving a couple of grams is neither here nor there really. So on balance, unless you are very slim, I'd go for the jacket. One bonus is that the anorak packs into it's pocket which the jacket doesn't - if that's important to you.
Not sure the benefit of the slightly less weight would convince me, tbh, although I can see the appeal for some. But it's essentially the same piece as the jacket version minus half the zip, and in that sense you simply can't go wrong.
The SL - which I own - is an absolute masterpiece. Essentially a soft shell with just the right amount of insulation to keep you warm right down to single digit temperatures. It's my favourite jacket ever. It's that good.
Hi Dominic. The Atom SL is an absolute belter, in all its guises! Thanks for watching. Paul.
Anorak, it does tell you something really.
I have been reliably informed that the word Anorak is originally an Inuit word for a hoodless pull over. Paul.
I have the jacket version and for me the insulation adds very little warmth but just gives it a more comfortable feel verus a standard softshell. If this is ever too warm it just means no jacket at all is required.
The ideal summer softshell.
I concur! Thanks for watching. Paul.
AGREE! 👍🏽
I've just order one of these on the back of watching your excellent review ,only downside is I was after an xl which you didn't have so I've ordered it from a different source ,which was a little but of a downer 😑
Hi Mark, thanks for watching and I hope that you enjoy using your new Atom SL Anorak. We had XL in black by the way! Paul.
Can you use it in mild/a little heavier rain and also when it’s about 5 degrees or will I have to layer more?
Mild rain yes, heavy rain no. In regards to temperature it depends what you're doing, how fast you're moving and whether you're wearing any other layers. I'd be fine using this in 5°C when moving relatively quickly with just a light baselayer underneath and not a huge amount of wind.
What exactly is changed on the Atom SL jacket 2021 vs the old one tough? Imho they just changed the name of the face fabric?
Essentially the main changes are around the use of more environmentally friendly fabrics. The function of the Anorak is unchanged, it's just now a bit kinder to the planet. Thanks for watching. Paul.
Do you have zip issues? I saw a couple of reviews saying like it seems there is no zip lock and the zip come off really easily. Thanks 🙏🏼
I can't recall having any issues, but we've not tried this for longer than it took for us to film the video. Harry
No, no, nooooooo! 😱 not another must buy on my trekit list!
Sorry!
Do you think you can wear a rucksack directly on the anorak when hiking or is the fabric too thin and delicate for this?
I've personally never had an issue, but it depends on the weight of your pack I suppose. I've used my camera bag (10kg ish) with an Atom SL for a few years now and it's all good. Harry
thank you for this youtube
No; thank you for watching!
How does it compare to Rab’s vapour rise?
Hi. The Atom SL is very different to Rab's Vapour Rise as it uses an insulation rather than a double layer construction. The VR is certainly more breathable, as for eather resistance, they perform very closely to each other. Personally, I find that the way the SL glides over other layers is a winner for me and that would swing it, even though I'm a big fan of those double layer garments. Sorry, not a very definitive answer, as with all this things, it's down to personal preference. Paul.
Would you prefer the sl hoody full zip or the anorak if you had to chose one?
I have both and I will probably use the jacket more simply because it’s easier to get on and off and the two pockets are useful for carrying gloves and keys etc. But the anorak is useful for cycling as you can carry a phone in the chest pocket, and packs down into the same pocket.
If I was "forced" to choose, I'd have the Anorak, I just love a pull-on! Thanks for watching. Paul.
This is Ladon color, right? Seems bit lighter than in Arcteryx press pictures. What does it look like irl?
I have the same jacket in Ladon. I’d say it’s a light blueish green. It’s basically like Labyrinth but more of an aquamarine colour.
HI, it looks pretty much the same as in the video, a bluey grey kinda colour.
Thank you both for your answers, I’ll give it a go!
Anorak comes from the Inuits (Esquimo)...after all Arcteryx is a Canadian company 😉
Hi Susy, thanks for the info. It's a shame that here in the UK the word has such nerdy connotations. Paul.
Is this the same fit as the Atom LT and ar
A little slimmer.
If this mesh is trapping air between the layers of shell fabric, thank it's more of a insulation, than breathibility
The mesh provides a teeny weeny bit of insulation, it is another layer after all, but it really helps with internal climate control too. Paul.

Hi, Chris P. here from Trekkit. An egg and some bacon walks into a bar, right, and the bartender says "we don’t serve breakfast here". Cheeky lad behind the counter, innit? Anyways, I got to go, cheers.
🤣🤣
Anoraknaphobia!
😂
Sold lol
Good choice! Thanks for watching. Paul.
Is that the Calvus cap? 🧢
It certainly is, I have three of them! Thanks for watching. Paul.
I've just bought one along with some Darn tough socks. I originally wanted the labyrinth colour but they haven't had stock for ages so went with the new Tatsu green. Glad I did as it looks brill. Doesn't fit me as well as it fits Paul though. P.s Darn tough socks are amazing. Always had Bridgedale but these are on another level.

Big thanks
I have a bit of a stomach.
I'm growing very attached to mine!
@@trekitt I guess at 55 it could be worse for me. Give Nellie a scratch from me!
you should just say cagoule
OH NO! That's worse than anorak. Thanks for watching. Paul.
Standing around talking about the anorak is a boring review. Do it in the rain next time. Show the jacket being used in the setting it was intended to be used.
We did! That’s the beauty of the Atom SL Anorak, it can be used in any weather in any location. Paul.
