    I am currently 1/2 way through my section hike of Shenandoah NP and came across your video. Just subbed to support a fellow CZcams blogger and hiker out there. Love supporting fellow hikers in the outdoor community. Once I fill in these remaining 50 miles I will have connected Tye River Va to the Mason Dixon in PA and still have a lot to go! LOL! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. ~RVA~

    Wow, It turns out that "Compton" is much more peaceful, serene and rural than the west coast gangster rappers would have us believe! Lol.
    Seriously though, I back packed it during a major winter cold spell in February of 2007. We did about 1/3 of it from about 33 miles southward from Front Royal, through the northernmost area, but we took a side trail out to a spot we had pre-parked our 2nd car. One guy had a digital weather device, that recorded our 1st night at 6°f, the 2nd day got up to a very windy 22° and our 2nd night warmed up to a balmy 8°... Day 3 got up into the low to mid 30s, practically tropical!
    I had just bought a Jetboil v1, and although it worked, it cooked only about 1/2 the normal speed, due to decreased isobutane fuel effectiveness at cold temps.

    What time of year did you go? I noticed the cold and the snow near freezing temp, what month was this? I'm going this August through hike on Shenandoah. I'm guessing it never gets below 45°.

    • @woodycarr
      @woodycarr  Před rokem

      My trip was in late October. You will probably not see lows below 55 degrees at the highest elevations in August. Enjoy your trip!

  • @blagow1
    @blagow1 Před 3 lety

    What were the dates of your trip? I'm hoping to be going in October and trying to plan with good chances of seeing the Fall foliage. Also, was it hard to find stealth camping spots?

    • @woodycarr
      @woodycarr  Před 3 lety

      October 19th thru 26th, 2018. The Fall color was better for the last three days of my hike. Stealth spots were not too hard to find. I used the Guthooks app to help find spots. Worth the $9 for the section IMHO.
      Have fun on your trip!

      Thank you! The spring at 11:42 is at mile 947.3 NB (a couple of miles north of Pass Mountain Hut.) There are a lot of springs in the park. The Guthooks app is a good resource for finding springs along the Appalachian Trail.

      You'll have a great time, David!
      I found this guide good for planning my trip. www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/SHEN_BCTrip-AT_through_SNP_average_17_miles_per_day_E104-508.pdf
      I recommend getting the Guthook Guide app as well. It was useful for planning and was great to have on the trail. That app does not require a cell phone connection to work which is great because coverage is very spotty in the park. You can purchase the section you need for about $9. Just download the maps before you go. atlasguides.com/appalachian-trail/
      Hope that helps a little.

    I am planning a section hike in Shenandoah. Can you tell me why you decided to carry 8 days of food rather than resupplying inside the park?

    • @woodycarr
      @woodycarr  Před 3 lety +1

      The obvious place to resupply would have been Big Meadows. I was under the impression at that time that the wayside was going to be closed for renovations. As it turned out, it closed a couple of weeks after my trip and reopened the following season. If I were doing it again, I would resupply at Big Meadows. Do keep in mind the cost will be higher and the selection will be a bit more limited in the park. Thanks for watching the video!
