Bikepacking the New River Trail State Park in Virginia
In this video, I'm taking a 3-day, 2-night bikepacking trip in the New River Trail State Park in southwest Virginia.
Come along for the ride as I go from the Draper entrance of the park down to Fries stopping to camp and relax in the Millrace campground at Foster Falls.
This Rails-to-Trail linear park offers easy peddling and beautiful scenery as the trail follows the historic New River along much of the path.
I used a new Spider rack, cradle and dry bag system from @aeroebikepack to carry my gear on my bike which worked great!

    Great video, is there anything you did regarding bear safety during your camp?

    • @woodycarr
      @woodycarr Před 2 dny

      Thank you! The Millrace Campground where I stayed is primitive with no vehicular access to the campsites and no showers or bathhouses. However, there were no bear boxes for storing food so I suspect bears in the campground are not typically a problem. That said, I always use a LOKSAK OPSAK odor-proof bag to help critter-proof my food against raccoons, squirrels, and mice. I did hang my food bag on of the poles in the site but it was not a typical "bear bag hang" from a tall tree like I would use in a more wilderness areas. Hope that helps.

    i really like the new river trail. I have ridden it many times. i have stayed at foster falls a few times to. Look nice video, and thanks for sharing. Look, i noticed your dual suspenion mt bike. nice bike for the trails, but you are out of your element on this kind of bike. It's like putting lip stick on a pig and telling the sow she's pretty!! You need a hybrid bike, or a hard tail mt bike, and better yet a gravel adventure bike. But if you really want to ride in style get you a nice touring bike. that kind of mt bike is the worst choice you could have made to bike pack a rail trail. anyhow, glad you had a good time, and thanks for sharing!! no pun intended toward you or your bike, but just saying!!

      Thanks @mkenyon7429. Overnight parking at the various entry points requires a fee or state park pass. I used my annual pass at the Draper entrance. I just hung it on my rearview mirror. @@woodycarr We look forward to that trip for sure. We bikepacked the VA Creeper Trail recently, which is wonderful as well. Those videos are up now. As far as Tenkara, I recommend carrying a spare tip section. You will get hung up and break it eventually. I try to only cast places where I can walk to my line if needed to pull on it directly instead of using the rod. But that certainly limits where you fish. I love the simplicity of it. I also carry a 6’ telescoping rod with a spinning reel to use other places where Tenkara won’t work well.

      It will be worth the wait. The tracking capabilities and obstacle avoidance are unmatched. However in my mind, it really is a very specialized second drone. Your EVO is a perfect complement. The EVO will perform much better at father distances. The WIFI transmission on the Skydio 2 breaks up fairly quickly. It's really a drone for tracking or getting really tight shots close to your position. For that, it's great. You will be amazed at what you will fly it through... with confidence.

    Wow, It turns out that "Compton" is much more peaceful, serene and rural than the west coast gangster rappers would have us believe! Lol. Seriously though, I back packed it during a major winter cold spell in February of 2007. We did about 1/3 of it from about 33 miles southward from Front Royal, through the northernmost area, but we took a side trail out to a spot we had pre-parked our 2nd car. One guy had a digital weather device, that recorded our 1st night at 6°f, the 2nd day got up to a very windy 22° and our 2nd night warmed up to a balmy 8°... Day 3 got up into the low to mid 30s, practically tropical! I had just bought a Jetboil v1, and although it worked, it cooked only about 1/2 the normal speed, due to decreased isobutane fuel effectiveness at cold temps.

    I liked your videos and decided to subscribe. What type of camera are you using? Do you plan on doing more hikes in Shannadoh? I would like to hike with you.
