commentary ftw. being someone that is into this stuff but has not ever done it, hearing you describe the process is extra cool. not only do i get to watch a craftsman at work, but i get to hear what he's doing and why. fantastic.
One thing that has helped me with a rounded heel is putting the piece in a vice, tip down, and upsetting the heel from the back. It helps square it up and gives you more mass to get more height at the heel as well.
I have a hard time with the heal, too. I would love to see a video on those techniques.
For the heel, I use a rounding hammer. Pointing the “corner” you’re looking for towards myself, and tilting my hammer angle back so the aggressive outer radius of the hammer draws material towards me. More tilt as you go

If you're having trouble squaring off the heel, it might be worth isolating the handle before you start beveling the heel. that way, you can use the cross peen to try and form it into a square (or move material into a place where you can grind it square).
The commentary videos are always better than the non commentary

You could try establishing the heel with a parting tool or a v edge step(dunno what its called). I have scrap that came from mill/lathe tool holders that I use as forming tools and one is a v groove that broke at the bottom. I use the edge like the edge of the anvil.
As a hobbyist maker, my forging attempts have been mediocre at best. I have the upmost respect for people who forge and make it look easy.

Try isolating the heel with 1/2” round stock bent 90 degrees in your pritchel hole before forging the handle or blade

Squaring up the heel, if you draw the heel out before pointing, could you hang the heel on the edge of the anvil and then hit the end where the point will eventually be and upset the heel square?

Try starting with the handle/back of the blade first if you want it squared off. Forge in the profile/tip last so you have material to hammer on to get it as square as you want. Or just go to stock removal….
I’m thinking you’re right on with isolating the handle first I’m going to try that a few times next.
The rasp is typically a water quench
Yes it was quenched in water
Regarding JFAK8 use a water/brine quench to increase hardness: if it goes horribly wrong then don't post it. (Or do.) I managed to destroy most of my first knives that way. Some pretty spectacularly.

Maybe you forgot to shout at it during the quench like Murray Carter does.
Hmm Have you tried setting the heel using a rounded edge of the anvil to cut it in...From a blacksmithing point of view sharper features like the heel are something I try and do first but you need to have calculated the amount of steel you need for the blade quite accurately.
Mild steel allows the use of set hammers and a vice to push the steel around and get that final shape but you definitely can't do that with high carbon steels
I like the commentaries but watch the ones videos without narration when I have company because then it doesnt matter about the sound being off
That’s a neat idea. I’ve tried striking w the corner of my square faced hammer which is slightly rounded but not used a dressed corner of the anvil. That’d be more accurate in my case. I think you’re right this all has a lot to do with how much steel one can gather. What works w 1/4” prob not as effective w 1/8” starting width.
I commented on the other video assuming the knife shown at the beginning was the knife being built in the video. I should have known by the absence of file teeth material. Duh! Sorry. I'm up to speed now. P.S. I like the way you shape and thin your heels compared to how I do them. Yours seems more efficient in material and time. My 2 cents.

@@GreenBeetle On a more serious note, the only way I know to get that heel more defined is to do a little bit of preform to get a tiny fat upset right above where you plan to lay the half-face blows to form that heel, with a slight forward curve in the preform there so that you'll have the extra material there to form that heel without going too thin or making a banana, then when you hammer in your bevels, just keep moving material down into the heel and re-square it as you go until it's close to square, and finish it at the grinder to get it sharp. To preform it, just get it orange and whack it on the horn to put the forward curve and upset in it right above where you plan to put the heel. That may not be of any use, but I hope that helps, bro.

3:25 You could just grind it... is that considered 'cheating'? It's not damascus, so you're not losing any pattern
I don’t think it’s cheating necessarily but I worry “fixing” a rounded heel w grinding will either narrow the width of the blade or pull the heel forward away from the plunge.
