  • There will always be complainers on CZcams. Let's talk about why there are sponsors on this channel. Turn off Ad-Block and subscribe to CZcams Premium. I did last year and it's worth every penny. CZcams Premium PAYS CREATORS.
Regarding video sponsors, unlike CZcams ads you can skip sponsored messages with one click.
Temu Tumbler video: I pointed out the knife I ordered off their platform was garbage and that there were many sites selling 'tumbler'-like sharpeners. Guess what sits by my stove and I'm' still using btw... That's right the rolling sharpener from Temu. I might look into the Hone sharpener in the future.hmmmmm
I don't choose sponsors, they choose me. I turned down a mobile game app last year and that was probably a mistake. I've reached out to a few knife related businesses about sponsorship with no luck. It is what is.

Yeah, I don't really agree with them but i get that they like his other videos, and are sad that he's making more of a type of video there just don't like watching. I for one don't mind the sponsored stuff, It's just kind of a thing for youtubers now. I do prefer the build videos but i get that money has to come from somewhere, and he's a lot more honest reviewing sponsored products than most.

This hobby is expensive enough (and sometimes hard to justify) for us guys without CZcams channels, let alone someone like you who has all the extra filming expenses, time dedicated to producing the videos instead of more knives, and does some crazy cool experimental stuff that is both expensive and not necessarily the best from a pure knife sales perspective. I got my footing under me as a bladesmith watching and learning from a lot of your video. The value you give back to the bladesmithing community goes beyond the entertainment value of the videos, there’s also an educational and influence aspect that I’m sure has touched more smiths than myself. Keep doing what you do, Steve, and don’t listen to the whiny assholes. Your true target audience has, and always will, support you.

I truly hope your channel will thrive this year. I appreciate the fact that you use tools that most decent hands-on people would have access to as most other channels has overly fancy equipment that makes the process seem too industrial, instead with your videos you actually get a sense of all the challenges and joys of making a knife in your garage. You have inspired me to take up the hobby of knife making and as a full time working man I am impressed that you even have time to spend on this hobby let alone have time to film and edit anything. Between running a homestead and working full time I average about 4 Knives a year which are stock removal only, If I had to forge or make a damascus knife ill probably only be able to do 2 or 3 a year.
I have enjoyed all your sponsored videos just as much as any of the other, in fact I wish you could get a lot more knife related sponsors as those videos are exceptionally informative and I can see the effort you put in to make the video as unbiased as possible.
If our currency wasn't absolutely useless (South African Rand) I would buy every single knife you make or just to keep your channel going and help you get some new equipment.
Anyways, that was just a long way of saying keep up the excellent videos and know that your efforts are appreciated by most of us.

That puts things into perspective for me. I got into knife making over 10 years ago because it was something I happen to have a nack for. Then after making a few hundred knives and only selling a few of them I quickly realized I needed to sell more just to be able to make enough to keep going at it.
I began only doing commission work which ultimately was faw and few between. Tried doing the YT thing, asking for donations, hoping word of mouth and Instagram would help. Even competed on Forged In Fire. Long story short, I hung my hammers and sold all my equipment and no longer making knives. It's a tough trade to stay afloat in.
I have a laser engraver and have made more money in the last two months than I did making knives all of last year.
And my YT is pretty much at a stand still. The world is a weird thing

You started me on knife making, then around a half a year later I first watched forged in fire. I had quit drinking and I needed something the really keep me busy; I was in to knife making 100% and making some cool stuff. I really grew tired of hand sanding and took a break, which turned into a longer break. I’m back now but making small knives… like really small knives 5-7” total. I freaking love it and I’ve found my niche. Small knives are where it’s at, and you can wear them on your waste and not look like a weirdo.

The internet always finds a reason to cry about or hate about, if it isn´t too cheap then its too expensive, or this or that. I don´t mind sponsors as long as they fit the channel a bit and if the review is honest about the product and sponsor. A lot of people have no clue how much it costs to run a channel about blacksmithing, and the time it takes to make it. I would suggest those that don´t make knives, let them hand sand a 80 grit knifeblade about 20cm long to a mirror polish and see how long it takes them. Most will quit not even half way in.

I couldn't agree more! I'm a small channel hovering around 4.1k subs. I don't get any sponsor requests and the number of hours spend on making the knife, capturing the raw footage, editing the video for some degree of quality, voice over, and publishing on at least 2 platforms, is almost a full time job. It makes it really hard when you're already working a 40 hour work week at a career and then doing this, too.

People really need to understand that we don't do this to get rich. Also, that the educational videos don't go viral (that often)... so when you put all the work into a video that has a bunch of explanation, there is a chance that it will get a lot of views or a couple of thousand. The sponsors are what makes it better for us and kind of a reward for all the work. I went full time Knife Making and had to cut back on the video making, it just takes too much time to film and make them. It took about a month to figure out the balance. Now, I'm in a good spot with Live Streams and videos.

@@GreenBeetle I will forge a knife on a live stream and then that knife becomes the build that I complete on my "Shop Talk Tuesday" episodes. I typically do my live streams on Saturdays at 7pm and they have been getting over 5k views during the live stream lately. It saves a some time editing because the actual forging parts are all done live, that way I can just worry about editing the other parts. It's also nice to have the chat section going on and being able to answer questions as I go. I just treat it like a "Hammer in" for a large group of people.

Wait... I watched the whole thing and I still feel like complaining! Not about you schilling for product, but just life in general. Now you say you are not interested. My wife isn't interested in listening either. CZcams was my only outlet, now I will just have to go outside and scream at trees.

@@GreenBeetle I feel an a review of sponsored bandages are coming up. If you did I would find it extremely entertaining with comparisons to said lesser bandages like duct tape and kerchiefs. (In all seriousness.. love your stuff).

This has nothing to do with sponsorships and everything to do with WHO you do sponsorships with and how.
I didn't unsub because you have sponsors. I've unsubbed because you gave exposure and a voice to abusive companies and then turned around and put your supporters on blast when they told you how much injury these particular sponsors cause.
This has been your most informative video yet. It really helped me to better understand what kind of creator you are.
You can have whatever sponsors you want, and I can watch whoever I want.
    That means not you anymore.
    Enjoy your sponsors.

Can only do sponsorships with those that offer... I am guessing they are few and far between... Beggars can't be choosers. You can choose not to view and feel all high and mighty with your superior morals wank, as obviously you are not begging for choice.
I subscribe to CZcams and will continue to watch the content I want to watch... That includes Green Beetle.

I watch you tube because it's informative and I'm interested in all things made by craftsman. I have even learned how to replace things on cars that before would have required an hour drive to a reference library to pay for photo copies and hours of reading and note taking from a repair manual to be able to diagnose and fix the problem. You and the other you tubers that I follow have made research easy for me. Anything expensive that I'm thinking about buying as far as tools go I will agonize over making the decision. You and Fire creek both did quality sharpener reviews which helped me to decide what t to invest in after I turn out my first successful knife. I spent 20 plus years working with wood and know firsthand that trying to sell something you create and make a profit that comes close to paying you what your time is worth is not always a reality. Remember that you have followers who decide to try to branch out in a new direction because we have seen you try, and fail, and share where it went wrong so that not only you learned from your mistake but so did we. Screw the keyboard warriors!
    Keep doing you!

I'm cool with it, related sponsor products aren't really a big deal for me.
Maybe try linking up with Benchmark Abrasives or a belt company

Apart from all those facts you stated in this video, and what other comments here said as well, I gotta say I really enjoy your sharpener reviews, too, sponsored or not. You‘re honestly in listing pros _and_ cons, and there‘s not too many channels who review somewhat special interest stuff like that, especially ones with practical experience in the field (not pure review channels).
Unless you suddenly start to review stuff that has no relation at ll to your channel, I don’t see the downside at all.
