I started out this day anticipating on covering some pretty routine work orders. As the day started, I didn't bother recording and was actually gonna chalk up the day as a wash... until two outage calls came in! While not overly exciting, it's another great example of our response and thought process from start to finish.

My dad used to fuss when the power company would trim branches from the power lines. He would gripe about how they "ruined his trees." He didn't like it when I would ask him why he didn't keep the branches trimmed himself or why he didn't plant the trees far enough away from the lines that he wouldn't have to worry about it.
Around here (southwest Connecticut) "tree trimming" got a bad name when the Department of Transportation advertised a project along a scenic highway with that description and then proceeded to clear cut everything within 100 feet of the roadway.
@@John-ru5ud Ahhh...southwestern CT. Grew up in Newtown. People used to complain about the tree trimming...then hurricane Gloria knocked the power out for over a week due to all the trees and tree limbs coming down onto the lines. Not so much tree trimming complaining after that. ;)
My issue is that last time the contractors came through to trim, they cut way back, beyond the PoCo right-of-way, left deep ruts and scraped patches of my grass away, and left tree debris all over...

Cool video thanks for showing the more "boring" stuff too. I just put $231 of diesel in my truck today and it bought me 105L so $2.20/L.
We just had a major storm blow through Ottawa where I am, over 300 damaged poles and 180,000 customers without power. It was complete carnage. It took hydro almost 2 weeks to get everything sorted back out. As bad as it was, once the recovery started I was able to pick out the grounds that the crews had attached to lines while working and the open and tagged cutouts near their work areas. Being able to recognize even a bit of the procedures that hydro crews use while working was really cool to me. Thanks for being willing to share what you do with us and thanks to all the linemen who work so hard to keep us connected!
In Melbourne Australia is $au2.20/litre too.. they are expecting it to go to $au2.40 soon

South Carolina, diesel is 5.50 a gallon today. I enjoy watching your work, I am a retired journeyman Electrician. After 25 years of working with people and electricity, at the end of the day electricity was still my friend !!
I am glad to know that the trees up in Canada are as bad down here in Michigan, so many outages caused by trees. Hard to keep up with so many lines running all over the place and trees all over.
The video speedups looked and sounded like they came straight out of Skyrim.

Our company just purchased the same harness and the leg straps wonât stay tight and the buckles come loose also. They are sending 1500 of them back to buckingham for a reworking. Be safe. Check it frequently.
There are trees in my power line coming to my house I called and reported it countless times until my power went out it even grew up into the transformer. It was very frustrating. But I knew they were working as hard as they could.
I've been binge watching your videos for a couple of days now. I don't know why this is so interesting to me, but it is. Thanks for sharing your adventures as a lineman and explaining things along the way. I've really enjoyed it and learned a ton of things I'll probably never need to know. đ

CSB time about sway up high: I was doing 1000 watt metal halide lights and it was a tad windy. Somewhere around 45 kmh. Lights are somewhere around 15 meters in the air. I know they're swaying a bit but I have no idea how much.
I get down on the ground and my partner looks at me and says "that light was swaying like 5 feet in either direction and you were just swaying right with it How?"
I know most of your poles are probably in the 10 to 12 meter range. How high does your basket go?
Northeastern Connecticut in the United States regular at $4.65 to $4.85 Diesel at $6.59 the state suspended a 25 cent from their gas tax since April-Jun 30 July 4 we paying over $5.00 for regular gas.
Maybe a dull day but very interesting video. That pole saw work is tough, especially reaching out like that. Good job well done.

Tree trimming is always controversial. After a bad ice storm a decade or so ago here in New Hampshire the state PUC updated the rules to and "strongly encouraged" the electric utility to get more aggressive with tree trimming.
I'm in the Southeast, and last time they came through, they cut my branches way back (even beyond their actual right-of-way). I wouldn't mind so much if they hasn't left such deep ruts in my soil, and so much tree debris behind, that I couldn't mow. Neither the power company nor their contractor wanted to take responsibility until I wrote the County and the Board of Utilities. The contractor eventually cleaned up the worst of the damage, but not all of it.
@@WorldPowerLabs I can't speak for your state, but in mine, it is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain and keep all vegetation at least 6 feet from any aerial energized lines. If the utility has to come do it, the property owner is responsible for any and all cleanup and repair due to tree trimming/vegetation removal.
Yea... Everyone bitches about the tree trimming until their power goes out.
Trees should not grow into the utility easement. Period.
I imagine smart meters will help you so much in outage diagnosis and early discovery as every service is monitored in real time!

i mean i had wtf moment when i heard that some countries have close range rf meters that are read by passing truck. sometimes with local mesh so you don't have to drive through every road
and this goes well into widespread use of mobile networks. considering useful life of a meter

Dude I live in northern California and regular gas at the station I work at is $6.26 per gallon. Love the channel btw. I miss electrical work. Never did high voltage stuff but you have definitely perked my interest.

How you make out ?
Lowest price here in Central Oregon today is $5.13 USD a gallon for unleaded petrol. Weâre 300 miles from the refrinaries on the other side of the Cascade Mountains, so the price has always been higher than elsewhere. Oregon has one of the higher fuel taxes as well

Awesome video!! We do the same thing when it comes to tree trimming but we also have a planner coordinate the tree trimmers to clean up a trouble line.
Diesel in the UK where I live is currently ÂŁ1.80 per litre ÂŁ8.18 per Imp gallon or ÂŁ6.84 per US gallon.
At 1:1.57 GBP to CAD that is $2.83 a litre, $12.84 per Imp gallon, $10.74 per US gallon, pretty much the most expensive itâs ever been here. Domestic electricity and gas has increased by 50+ % this year, with an expected further rise of 50% October. My electricity is ÂŁ0.31 / kWh daytime ($0.49) and ÂŁ0.21 ($0.33) at night. Gas is currently approx ÂŁ0.08 ($0.13) per kWh, though thereâs a real push to stop using it, with a ban on domestic gas boilers (furnaces) here from 2025. Keep the great videos coming! Diesel fuel in Central North Carolina is right at 5:30 a gallon right now. That would probably make it to be around the dollar 80 per liter. It was fun seeing the work and I'm glad you let us tag along! Let's go home and get dinner, sounds like a good plan!

Places here in California require gates to have two (or more) locks, with the utility company having a key, so as not to have to wait for someone to open a gate.
Work mostly urd in Alberta first year apprentice trying to get into overhead, your vids are awesome to watch and your getting good at that whole vlog thing man! can't wait to get into the overhead world. Diesel in ab is 1.73/ L. Take er easy

Here in Ontario, Hydro One says they upped the tree trimming schedule in Muskoka District to every 3 years. Like much of the New Brunswick countryside there is a lot of woods that the distribution lines often run through and a lot of Toronto families have cottages there.
I dream of only 68°F. That's like having air conditioning on outdoors. It's been over 90 here for a month, and will be for the next few months.
Yhea I get you, brushing is an ongoing thing and in low density areas it takes a lot of resources to keep things clear.

The price of diesel here in B.C. is $2.29 per litre ($8.70 per gallon) , regular unleaded gas is $2.19 per litre ($8.29 per gallon).

Hi always nice to watch your channel. I live in the Netherlands naar the German border, petrol proces are around 2.25⏠per liter over here. Diesel is around 2.10 ⏠per liter. In Germany petrol is a lot cheaper (60 to 80 cents a liter cheaper) so a lot of petrol tourism going on right now. Diesel is normally more expensive in Germany but it is a bit of a tie right now. Highest petrol prime I have seen was 2.39 ⏠for a liter...
I don't drive that much so I am lucky in that sense.
Just did a drive between Orlando and Chicago. Cheapest I bought diesel was $4.99 / gallon in Georgia. Average was around $5.39 / gallon. Just got $5.19 / Gallon in Florida - ran the station dry. Didn't see anyone breaking $6 but several stations were at $5.99 in some of the metropolitan areas. Fortunately I never had to buy any of that really expensive stuff!
Utah, diesel is $5.67/gal here.
When were some of the older lines you inspect constructed? I often wonder how it must have been in the 40s, 50s building over the mountains and such.
Not sure if youâve heard of the Gateway West project, 500kV line steel H-Frames through Wyoming which is kicking off this fall, massive project around $1 billion, my company won a portion of this historical project!

In the Phoenix Arizona area 5.19-5.49 / gallon for regular, Diesel is 5.29-6.49 / gallon depending on where you look.
North Georgia. We're seeing $5.19 to $5.29 gallon for on-road diesel. $4.99 for off road (I use that in the tractor and mini-ex).
Jeez, I wonât complain as much about gas prices. Portland(ish) Oregon- some local stations at 5.80-6 per gallon.

At first I was like Wow Diesel is cheap in Canada. Then I remembered you Canadian use the Canadian metric system instead of Gallons. I made that mistake once when I went to Ottawa for vacation. I thought wow this is cheap, but back then it was like 1 1/2 Canadian Dollars for a US Dollar and you did your pumps on metric. So it was about the same. I do miss the Ketchup flavored tater chips and the fries with gravy at McDonalds though!

In Laramie Wyoming regular unleaded is about $4.19 US per gallon, diesel is about $5.25

I heard you mention that connecting Lightning arresters before the Drop Out fuse is no longer standard.....any more information on that?

$3.13 Canadian in the UK for diesel last night :o similar for petrol/gasoline. It's interesting that your guy wires over there are solid. Here in the UK they have an insulator in them which I suspect is to prevent people getting shocked if the grounding of the guy wire is not perfect.
I wonder if that tree was dead from touching the primary wire at an earlier time?
South Australia fuel at present depending on area, is anywhere from AUD$1.87 - $2.20 per liter

I'm in California, and diesel is around $8 or $9 a gallon. Regular gasoline is in the $6 to 7 a gallon in most places.
In Dallas area diesel is $4.899/gal. Then we can get a buck off from grocery store per gallon. đ
My local gas station is $ 4.99 a gallon and Diesel is close to 6 gallon in Brewer, Maine
South Sound in Western Washington State's Costco has regular gas for $4.929 and premium for $5.399 per gallon. Great video! :)
Up here on Camano it's $5.35/gal for reg. I work for the County and we have our own fuel. No idea what were paying but we go thru about 3,000 gallons of diesel and 1,500 gallons of gas a week.
@@mikel9567 Interesting, I once worked for DOT and our shop had a big regional set of pumps that us and the police/other services used. There was hardly a time there wasn't at least half the pumps being used during week day work hours. Now I'm wondering how much that placed pumped per week alone. :)

Never new it, those are just fuse holders/disconnects, so the amp rating can be changed... I am amazed at how easy you make it look putting those fuses in place with those wiggly poles....
It takes a few! These particular cutouts can be re-fused up to 200 amp. The 100 to 200 aunt fuses require a larger size "door" that still fits
