The manual of mine states don’t turn it off when it is hot. Sink the temperature let it cool down and the turn it off. This to prolong the life of the device.

I think this is not surprise that the big, heavy components is hard to heat by this tool. The right way is to use standard solder iron.
Hot air is dedicated to smd components.
