Yeah, the fact that in this season he failed to mention the music section is beyond me, but then again it wasn't as big a change as it was in Season 3 with the synthesizers made to sound more orchestral and grander that would only be improved and used in the next two seasons as well.

This is one of the best seasons and one of the most important. So many crucial things happened. It's the season when the mvp Edward was at his peak, we met a ton of new characters who would become staples in the series, the environments got a lot more realistic and industrial, scraping and dieselization were introduced, and of course, it's the last season where every story was based off ones from the books.

Thomas is definitely at his worst this season; his negative traits are at their most overt here. Even so, there are still some overlooked moments that show or hint at the tank engine's good qualities.
In "Old Iron", he is quick to stand up for Edward when James is complaining about him.
In "Percy Takes the Plunge", he calmly and patiently explains to Percy the significance of the danger board. He even references his own folly in "Down The Mine" to get his point across.
He expresses genuine gratitude towards Bertie for getting his passengers to Edward and thanks the bus for being a good friend to him.
His friendship with Bertie shines through again in "Better Late Than Never" when Thomas takes pity on him for breaking down and returns the favor from "Bertie's Chase", being quick to help his passengers. And that was despite the offense Thomas took at Bertie's criticism of him earlier in the episode.
In "Thomas and Trevor", despite his initial skepticism of the traction engine, he does come around to seeing how capable Trevor is and even tries to cheer him up when the work is over. In the same story, Annie and Clarabel even mention that Trevor's kindness reminds them of Thomas. Those 2 more than anyone else would be the ones to truly understand Thomas and know who he is on the inside.
So even at his most petulant, flippant, egotistical, aloof and hotheaded level, Thomas still had some heart of gold moments sprinkled throughout this year.

In the original upload, I explained my alternate take on 'The Missing Coach', which figures in my line-up for my business plan for the near-future. The summary is this: 'Donald insists to Douglas whilst they are questioned of truancy to not press forward with his own desire to prove himself. Douglas however takes advantage of Duck being busy with other duties (as per the original story) to relieve him by taking Gordon's coaches away for him. The main difference from the book version is that, instead of leaving the coaches in a siding, Douglas moves them to another platform, ready for Henry to take out for his next train. This takes further advantage of a plot point in the origin book that ultimately goes nowhere, which states that coaches had to go out again with fresh passengers as another train as soon as they had arrived in the station. Henry leaves with Thomas's special coach unknowingly still attached behind his tender, and delays ensue when it becomes clear Thomas's coach is absent from the station. Donald finds out and to prevent Douglas being caught out, stays behind to take the blame whilst Douglas takes his goods train, only to have reckoned without Sir Topham Hatt's precise attention to scheduling.' This maintains the comical confusion of the original while at the same time being a more direct and action-driven plot.
I also think it would have been interesting if they took the opportunity to expand a bit on Edward's branch line; prior to the stories introducing BoCo, Bill and Ben, this wasn't given any major expansion, and some original characters who act as subordinates to Edward would have been perfect for that, and also potentially underlying the reason for Duck being sent to Edward's Station during Diesel's trial. As with my outline for 'The Missing Coach', this was something I have taken on-board in my personal plans. Regards, Samuel Farris.

I feel like Drip Tank was dropped more because it was a culmination of an arc in the book that the show's adaptation resolved by the first story. The book was designed to be an ongoing story, but the show clearly wanted it for the purpose of Thomas stories they could spread across the season to give Thomas consistent presence in it. It is kind of a shame, since I think Drip Tank placed near the end could have culminated the 'jerk Thomas' arc of the season nicely and transitioned him more naturally into his nicer Season Three self.
I feel like this 'out of order' element is what bogs down the season a little. Like Tug mentions it SOMETIMES works nicely (I like how the non-rail characters who barely appeared in Wilbert's books maintain presence throughout the season for example), but other times they mention stories that got skipped over like Percy's Promise and Bull's Eyes (I actually find it strange Percy Takes The Plunge took priority over those, especially Bull's Eyes which likely would have been easier to make, I could believe that Percy Takes The Plunge was the one hastily added when the Missing Coach was cancelled).

Season 2 of Thomas & Friends seems very interesting for me even when I first saw nearly every single episode on the VHS tapes! Also, I'd like to point out one thing: David Mitton stated in an interview just before he died in 2008 that the replacement episode for "The Missing Coach" was "Thomas, Percy and the Coal." My logical guess is that the first bunch of Tidmouth station yards scenes were filmed in December of '85 including "The Missing Coach", and then probably during their Christmas break, Britt Allcroft held a meeting with the production crew, saying that the plot for that episode would be too confusing for young viewers to follow. So, with "TMC" cancelled, the crew had to quickly draft the adaptation of "Thomas, Percy and the Coal" during their break, and once filming restarted in early January 1986, they resumed with the same set and the first scene to be shot from that episode was the scene where Thomas gets drenched with coal dust from the coal chute. I also noticed in the shot with Percy where Ringo Starr says "Percy was worried, but he couldn't help laughing", that you can barely see a hole in a house in the background in which I'm assuming that was the station master's house. So, I'm guessing that they filmed the Thomas drenched with Coal scene after the Thomas crash from "Thomas Comes to Breakfast."

Season 2 is good in its own ways, I love watching it and everything but Season 1 is just way better. This is just my opinion and I hope you respect it!
Also I agree that Thomas was being a jerk in Season 1, But as the seasons changed more, Thomas changed aswell. He always had a good heart in the seasons. Just not in Season 1 because it can clearly be seen. But for like Seasons 3,4,5,6 and so on that's totally different. Thomas indeed changed and that's what I love about him. I also love how Hit era made him better. Clearly the better version than he was in Season 1!

Despite the fact that they are still obvious flaws, I do like that the technical goofs of this season kinda of add to the industrial more serious feel of this season that shows how the show is moving on from the storybook world, but not entirely.

Season 2 will always be my favourite - evidenced by the fact that my childhood copy of The Deputation VHS tape was very heavily worn! The season made Edward my favourite engine. My sister and I have a running in-joke thanks to Cows ("It's only a cow!"), and I still firmly believe in the "backing signal"!. As much as I love all the episodes my faves are Edward's Exploit, Ghost Train and Pop Goes The Diesel.

Gotta hand it to you, you have a really good narrator voice. A lot of these videos tend to have a narrator who is very far on the spectrum so they can’t really convey messages well. This is the first channel with this content I can actually stand

As much as it's considered filler, Better Late Than Never is the episode of TTTEAF than I remember most vividly, although forgot that they were only roughly 5 min long tales. When checking that it was the episode I was recalling I found an upload on YT that has the Britt Allcroft Presents credit sting at the start & I didn't realise just how much nostalgia I had for that jingle. It was like hearing the BBC guitar melody off a dvd of Top Gear, I turned 21 last week & suddenly I'm 4 again (the final episode of S6 is just over a month older than I am)

I personally find it hard to believe that "Better Late Than Never" was the episode that replaced the Missing Coach because of how it connects so much with later episodes in the season. This is the episode where the viaduct repairs are established which are seen again in multiple other episodes this season, most notably in "Ghost Train." I also find it hard to believe that they wouldn't have already chosen to adapt it given that it came from the book specifically written to be adapted. Sure, they didn't adapt "Drip Tank" either, but if BLTN was never intended to be filmed, then that would mean only two of the stories from that book would have even been adapted. I know that many books have only had 1 or 2 stories adapted at the time, but given that the book was specifically written to be adapted, I find it hard to believe half the book would have been left out.. I personally find it more likely that "Thomas and Trevor" or Missing Christmas Tree were the replacement since they are based on one-off stories, but in all honesty, it seems like we'll never know for sure.

I'm not sure "Better Late Than Never" really *is* the filler episode that replaced the cancelled "Missing Coach," because as you said: The only episode without any dynamic camera movement is "The Runaway". Coincidentally, also a Thomas-centric episode in a series where he is NOT the focus this time around. Seems like a good bet to me that one was shot quick and dirty.

Could this not be filler for the missing coach or do you think it got put in by mistake?

Good review of season 2! I will admit that season 2 is an improvement. I will admit seeing the camera moving is great and it feels like you are moving. the stories I do like from every story from season 2 and weakest one is Better Late than never. If I had to choose one favorite from season 5 it would be Edward's Exploit and it does show he is not worthless and gains the respect from the other engines. But we would have to wait 5 years until Thomas returns to our screens.
