Your explanation of why Henry is still the same Henry after his crash is of course rational, though I prefer a more flippant explanation, like a train's consciousness being entirely within its smokebox door, meaning Henry's face was just put on a green Black 5 in Crewe (I hate it, I hate it, I hate it).

I always made the assumption that the character of each engine was a composite/amalgam of its crew and those unique 'personality' traits that all machines seem to pick up over time: the 'real' engine is just a steam train, it's just much easier to tell stories to children about the engine itself and not having to memorize the crew members, who often change over time.
So Henry can totally be two different engines and still be the same character if there's continuity in crew. Why not have Henry's old crew operate the 'new' Henry, after all?

Looking back, I think the reason why "Henry dies in tunnel" is so pervasive, alongside being obvs clickbait, is that it's so shocking and memorable - whereas him being freed in the next episode isn't as memorable. Add to that the scrapyard and how another train was forgotten in a shed and eventually buried by time, and...yeah, 'train dies in tunnel' isn't the only shocking, miserable 'end' in the show.

So I have a confession to make. I may have been the root of the whole "Henry died/stayed in the tunnel" misconception.
Years ago I was a regular on 4chan and requested the end of the episode be made on a .webm creation thread. I wanted it for YLYL threads because I always thought it was hilarious how the narrator would say "I think he deserved his punishment, don't you?", then the music would get all cheery and exciting and it would cut to Thomas smiling next to the credit roll.
Apparently people agreed, because that .webm started popping up everywhere. I had never seen it before then, so now I really think that maybe, just maybe, this could be my terrible, terrible contribution to TTTE history.

Henry: There's just me and me twin brother Horace.
      Horace: Hi Henry!
      Henry: Hi Horace!
Yeah I never saw this working, the whole two Henry's theory. Considering that the joke I just made comes from Victor Tanzig who I do enjoy and respect It couldn't have worked, how is Metal Fatigue any different to normal maintenance wear? It makes as much sense as any Time Travel plot would, consistent only to the writer. I honestly had the idea of having the 0-8-0 Hecate be rebuilt after her fateful crash into a SR Z class, my way of looking at it is that as long as a majority of the engine is intact it can be repaired/rebuilt into another similar class. The class Z are 0-8-0 side tank engines, as is Hecate (mainly this is because in a old Sodor/British Railway Stories series I had in mind she had a brother, and while he was built and purchased by another railway, he was very connected to her and so after her crash which was nearly fatal she was purchased and rebuilt a few days after by the head of my railway using a unfinished Z chassis and parts with as much as could be used to make her in a way like Henry)

IRL Raven designed and built a Pacific to compete against Gresley’s A1 (referred to as the A2, not to be confused with later A2s) for adoption by the soon-to-be LNER. When Ryan was restored at Crovan's Gate Steamworks, the Fat Controller asked Ryan if he wanted to be painted into his GNR Apple Green livery. Ryan was touched, but surprised TFC by asking if instead of having GNR decals on Apple Green livery, he could be painted in purple, his favorite color, with GNR decals. 15:12 actually there's a simpler explanation. Push-pull engines often had the push-pull gear at both front and rear, there's examples on the GWR (who loved push-pull) of push-pull trains consisting of two carriages, the loco, and then two more carriages. So in Thomas's case, perhaps either he's gotten turned around at point or Annie & Clarabel have been moved into a siding which he could only access from one end, and rather than go find a turntable, his crew just coupled him up facing the carriages.
Of course the simplest explanation is the artists not really understanding the source material, but....

Thomas was an 0-6-0T from Hudswell Clarke built to the same design as the MSC engines, but was built earlier so he could still be the first engine bought by the newly consolidated NWR. (Despite going to Sodor and helping connect all three lines years before Thomas arrived, Edward was not actually bought from the Furness Railway until after Thomas was purchased, hence his being #2.) Some time before _The Railway Series_ became a thing, Thomas had an accident that necessitated a major rebuild into a new shape that was superficially similar to the LB&SCR E2. _(Oooohh, World War II! WORLD WAR II! THOMAS’ PART IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR ENDED WITH HIM NEEDING EMERGENCY LIFE-SAVING SURGERY! IT ALL FITS!)_ When Reginald Payne was hired to illustrate the first book to have Thomas in it, he misunderstood the information provided to him and illustrated Thomas as an actual E2, which stuck. Fortunately for Thomas, most of the children who come to visit him don’t know the difference. The original wooden toy of Thomas was made by Wilbert based on Thomas’ appearance before his rebuild.

I'm sure that, in the Railway Series continuity, characters, and pronunciation, many an engine arriving at Knapford Junction and having the opportunity to have a conversation with Thomas, would think that here it was the other way around, and the branch line's terminus at Ffarquhar is named after the little blue Ffarquhar who pulls trains to it.

In regards to the Henry 1 and Henry 2 mystery, I believe HOW it was done was by this.
We all agree Henry couldn't possibly be remade into a black 5, but going with the debunk short about the smoke box doors being their faces, what MIGHT have happened is that the works removed Henry 1s smoke box door and attached it to the black 5 Henry 2. This would explain how he went from Gordon's shape, to an entirely different design, AND how he still has all his memories and why the fat controller refers to him as Henry.
I of course could very well be wrong about this, considering I don't know the smoke box door/boiler size of the 2, but looking at all the artwork and models, Henry and Gordon are basically the same size so It could be possible.

6:36 - Thomas and Gordon aging by dictation of their build dates would have been indifferent ultimately to where they stood in terms of hierarchy, and how they learn from the obstacles placed upon them. Wilbert Awdry essentially defined the characterisations of the engines in this way.
30:21 - My take for Oliver, which in fact ties into my show pitch plans for 'Thomas & Friends' moving forward, is that he is indeed not numbered 1436, but instead fellow 1400 class loco 1424. 1424, according to a book I have that details the basis, was withdrawn at the close of 1963, having rapped up the reported highest service mileage for the class. It spent the bulk of its working life based out of Gloucester, having initially worked in Wales. Given how Wilbert Awdry writes Oliver as a plucked but overconfident character, I find the juxtaposition a perfect one.
43:47 - Skarloey and Rheneas having Welsh accents could be explained away by their honouring respect for their Welsh twins by adopting their accents. Furthermore, Skarloey gaining a deep voice could be explained away by the knowledge given to us through Wilbert Awdry's Sodor history lecture notes. At one time, so the notes state, Skarloey was used to haul standard-gauge wagons for the Crovan's Gate Mining Company, being mounted on a custom-built special haulage wagon for the task. He hauled wagons twice his size at slow speed to Kirk Ronan harbour, and the extra effort from doing this would have caused him to make drawn-out pants, which would have opened up his vocal cords over time, giving him an unusually deeper sound for a little engine.
55:51 - Henry being heavily modified with LMS parts as opposed to being scrapped and replaced with a new engine is an interesting concept, and it makes fair sense as well. With that said, I think it likely Henry's mind-set would have been transferred to a Black 5 engine under construction; costs would have been more stabilised long-term with a standard engine.
    Regards, Samuel Farris.

So, one other thing with Henry's rebuild, it makes sense that he came back as a 5MT "Black Five" due to _where_ he was rebuilt. Crewe was the main steamworks for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, which was the primary operator of the 5MT, so Crewe was specifically tooled to build that class of locomotive which, as a 4-6-0 "Ten Wheeler" design, is the closest thing the LMS had to Henry's design. Obviously a LOT had to be rebuilt, but due to the severity of the crash Henry would have needed a total overhaul anyway, and probably would have been written off if he was working for any other railway - but the Fat Controller takes care of his engines, even if he can be a little hot-headed and quick to jump to conclusions.

In regard to actual engines appearing in Thomas, I have been thoroughly impressed with the homework the writers must have down to come up with some of the characters. Even in the CGI era; I was gob smacked when they portrayed Dash and Bash on "Misty Island Rescue" as the gypsy logging engines Falk and Gypsy preserved in Eureka, CA; and Marion, the Marion rail mounted steam shovel. Both of these are little-known steam engines; the writers and/or their consultants really know their steam machines.
I once had a project where I was documenting the world's remaining steam engines. One thing that endured Thomas to me was the world they created where steam engines were everywhere; not just locomotives, but steam rollers, traction engines, steam waggons, and steam ships are all kinds, even a four-stack ocean liner.
My son and to a lesser extent myself thought they modeled the entire Island of Sodor. The short on the time to travel across Sodor shows why that would be impossible. Sixty miles, scaled down to HO (1/87) scale, is still 3,641 feet; or roughly 2/3 of mile. It would take an army of workers years to build it, and good luck trying to find a building large enough to hold it. But they did a great job of making an illusion of modeling the entire island.

I’d be surprised if BoCo’s brother actually was evil.

Thomas Debunked was fun while it lasted!

I certainly prefer this over a bunch of small shorts.

Actually Awdry gave the Pane a picture of a E2 but with Pane not adding the slop on the back. Awdry wanted something to make Thomas more conventional so he had Thomas crash into the house to make him realistic. The reason I know this is according to the Hornby book of trains as the author of the book said that Pane just illustrated it wrong. I can get a screenshot of it if you want.

Glad these were saved! I was about starting to binge these right before your channel got terminated, so re-watching this again feels so good!

Thanks for reuploading these as one big video. I love the obscure lore touched on in some of these shorts, and it’s nice to have them back again all in one place.

So I'll just combine all my comments into one:
1: A minor note on top speeds: for steam engines, the only way to set those records properly was with special runs. there's likely many cases of engines breaking the 126mph mark. Many have argued that the Milwaukee Road's Hiawathas likely did that regularly, as the schedules called for an average of 120mph.
2: I kinda like a combination of the RWS version of Gordon's hill with the model series' track layout. Where I liver in New England, track tends to twist and turn to tackle grades, so it's just more familiar to me.
3: I feel like Scruffy's reappearances were just reusing the face. the other appearances don't have his S.C.Ruffy markings.
4: The numbers of the twins is a little odd. The last 812 built wasn't 661, but 665. For some reason 661 was skipped and became the last one built, and even then only after 325-328 were built. They would have ended up with their numbers anyway, but it's just a strange little thing.
5: It's hard to base Percy's age by comparing his appearance to others. With how much he's been modified, it's hard to say if he looked like Trojan when he was built in the first place.
6: Technically Hiro says he's "one of the first," so he's in the clear.
7: There's a good chance the presence of 1420 could be for the same reason you suggested his 1436 plate: to throw others off his trail. after all, 1420 is certainly not on the island.
8: My logic for numbers is that if it's a preserved engine, a character having that number is a reference to that engine, as opposed to being that engine. However, it it belongs to a scrapped engine, it's likely the same engine.
9: An interesting theory: Thomas is fitted for push-pull service. it's never stated WHERE this this was fitted, so for all of those that want Umber Brown Thomas, the LBSC may have experimentally fitted it to him, and giving him the brown paint for passenger service along with it.
10: I don't care where the engines are from, but as long as we don't get the same British accent for engines from all over England, I'm happy.
11: Hatt wouldn't scrap an engine, but Hatt didn't have that much control over what Stanier did. That being said, it's likely Henry I and Henry II are the same engine. The trailing wheels, given Henry's length and small firebox, was likely unnecessary and deleted to give him better adhesion. He got a new Belpaire firebox, but his Gresley-based straight boiler was reused as it appears in the book illustrations. Plus Hatt would know if Stanier gave him a different engine, thus Stanier would have to go through with a rebuild.
12: There's a good chance Boco had no idea what his brother was up to. I sure as hell don't know what my brother in Texas is doing.
13: So, James only got blue lining around 1965. Prior to that it was black. Interestingly, 1965 was the Centenary of the Skarloey Railway. It's possible he as touched up for that. A possible explanation for the earlier red paint was that a cash-strapped Northwestern Railway was seriously considering painting engines entirely in buffer beam red to save costs.
14: Hatt I didn't exactly marry the sister of a competitor. The Skarloey railway likely worked closely with the Northwestern, so it's possible Hatt I met Jane while meeting with Sir Handel regarding business stuff. Also Amanda Croarie is the sister of Jacob Croarie and daughter of the Jabez Croarie, owner and founder of the Ffarquhar Quarry Company. These links, combined with how much the industries on Sodor rely on the railways, makes the Hatt family one of the most powerful families on the island.
15: Now, I had an interesting thought regarding the austerity engine. It's never stated he DID get the engine, just that he was looking for one. That being said, we do know the next engine that was supposed to be added to the NWR lineup: Barry. My thought is that Hatt went to the scrapyard where Wilbert said he could find an austerity tank, only to find it's gone: scrapped, sold or otherwise. But he does find Barry there, and decides to buy him instead. Unfortunately, publishers just wanted more Thomas, so we never got Barry or the aAusterity tank, so we'll never know.
    God, that was a lot...
