Just got home from Bangkok. Scratched using a canal boat off my bucket list. Boarded a canal boat outside Jim Thompson House and took it to stop at Wat Saket. Attendant came around asking where I was going and quoted 12 baht. Super easy!

"It's great to know about the new route! I have never biked there before, so it's worth a shot. However, the pavement on Sukhumvit Soi 1 seems to be in bad shape, and there are many parked vehicles on both sides of the road, which makes the narrow street even narrower.
Please be cautious when riding near the zinc roofs as they have sharp edges that can cause cuts to your skin."

Lived almost two years at the last stop on this khlong in Bangkapi . I would always get the boat at Pratunam going home because it was the only way I would get a seat 😂. Gets crowded at the end of the day for people going to Bangkapi. There’s actually an electric boat you can take from the last stop all the way to minburi.

Jeroen, that's awesome you made a video of this. I've been taking regular walks along this route since they opened up the new path. I've walked to the left of where you started. The furthest you can go on foot in that direction (inbound) is just over the railroad tracks. Past that point there's no walkway on either side.
A few points of interest to add:
@7:35 On the opposite side of the bridge from Soi 11, there's a steel door which is open weekdays 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. That's at the back of Thanapoom Tower. It's a short walk along the side of the building to Petchaburi Rd. Turn left at the road, and there's Thanapoom Market. It's a nice, little market catering mostly to the office workers in the area.
@13:00 That pier/area is known as "Mor Sor Wor" by locals and the staff on the canal boats. "Mor Sor Wor" is an abbreviation of the Thai name of the university: "Mahawitayalai Srinakarin Wirot". It's worthwhile to take a walk through the university if you're in the area to see if there's anything going on. There's a market on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. On some afternoons, food trucks set up shop around the field.
@19:30 I've seen that same woman out there sweeping several times. She either takes a lot of pride in her neighborhood, or she has OCD. Maybe it's both. Whatever the reason, we could use more people like her. Good for you orange-haired lady! 👍😅
@20:00 On the right side, that little opening is the end of Sukhumvit Soi 49. In the afternoons, there are food-to-order shops and street vendors in that area. Walking in from the canal, there's a vacant lot on the right-hand side, around 50 meters in. In the early evenings there's a small market in that lot which caters to the locals (read "cheap prices"). There's a woman on one end of the market who sells Esarn food, so if you're hankering for some larb, nam dtok, or som tum, she's your go to place in the area.
The end of Soi 49 is very easy to spot along the canal. Directly opposite is CLOUD Thonglor-Petchaburi. It's a tall building with a distinctive top. It looks like it might be a helicopter pad? At this time, the building stands alone, so it serves as a good landmark to get your bearings if you explore the maze of sois in the area.
Last but not least, if you're near Thonglor bridge during weekday mornings, check out the cheap eats at Liberty Plaza. The entrance is right next to where the red, soi bus parks. "Khao gaeng" (Thai curry) dishes are 40-50 baht. There's a food-to-order shop on one end. The vendors in the center change day-to-day. The last few months there's been someone selling "khao soi", usually on Thursdays. He charges 40 baht for chicken khao soi, and 70 baht for the beef. Good for the wallet; good for the heart! 😄

yes, a couple more feet of width makes all the difference, but it's kind of moot when the new space gets taken over by parked scooters and ad hoc storage space by the residents.

News : The ceremony is part of “Luck Lock Love”, an event being held by the Expressway Authority of Thailand on February 14-18 and 23-25 to celebrate the month of love. The romantic backdrop is Thailand’s first cable-stayed bridge spanning the Chao Phraya River.
Visitors can expect live music performances, exhibitions and a feast of street food. The bridge’s middle section will be opened from 4pm to 10pm so the public can admire panoramic views of the River of Kings. (Credit : The Nation Thailand)

I just shared your content with a bicycle community on Facebook. However, I have a concern about the use of the pathways. People who live close to the pathways seem to obstruct their proper use. I have noticed chairs, food carts, motorcycles, and clothes hanging, almost blocking the way. There are also several speed bumps and barricades, likely built by residents. Despite signs indicating that motorcycles are not allowed, they are still using the pathway. This goes against the original purpose of building the pathway for walking and cycling.

    • @exalhoa
      @exalhoa Před 5 měsíci +1

I don't ride the path but I walk it regularly and I hate the sections the motorcycles use. Please just give pedestrians and bicyclists one safe space (besides the parks) to use without having to be on guard constantly! But hey, not my country, I'll go with the flow :)

Going back about 20 years ago, I was familiar with Saen Saep Canal which had black, dirty water. It smells bad and there is garbage floating everywhere. Efforts to improve the canal and solve the problem of dirty water have continued until now. Saen Saep Canal is considered to have returned to new life. It will not return to the same bad condition as before.

Great video! thank you 😍 Taking these boats (again) is definitely on my list next time I go to Bangkok. I tried it once 4 years ago, but only managed to get one stop 🤣We had to change boat and it was a bit confusing to figure which boat to use to get to our final destination + my friend had a bad leg so it was really tough to get off the boat since there were no stairs, so our boat adventure ended after 1 stop 😂 BUT will go again next time I visit.
