This time we get scammed by a mini van/taxi operating service. From my understanding, these businesses attract the customers by offering a very reasonable ticket price for the first trip but while returning they say that all the seats are already booked or the last vehicle already left and thus compelling the people to opt for their expensive private taxi service.
I was able to capture some of the chaos of the scam on camera. I was probably putting myself in a potentially dangerous situation by recording all of the madness but if it can make people aware of these scams or if it even reaches the Thai authorities to stop these scams then I feel it’s all worth it cause Thailand and its people are beautiful and these scammers are bringing a bad reputation ripping off people who come to explore the country.
If you can then please share this video, if it saves even one person from getting scammed then I will feel it's our win. Let’s beat these scammers together 💪
Apart from getting scammed, it was a fairly pleasant day exploring the floating market of Thailand.

So….I was there yesterday but booked a private taxi from Bangkok. They took us to the boat dock and we were told 3,000 baht (about $90) for 1.5 hours. Seriously, like wtf. I wanted to go somewhere else, like where you were but was told there was no place like that. I was with a Thai speaker and we could both tell this was their scam. Get you 1.5 hours from Bangkok and sink in the screws. I’ve been to Thailand before so while I was mad at them I was more mad at myself for letting this happen. I should have done my research first and not trusted the “tour” taxi guide. Lesson learned.
Also, this is just a high priced tourist trap. Not somewhere where Thais shop like it was in the past. You just boat through 100 or so shops selling you overpriced junk. Skip it totally. Go to big C or Lotus and buy the same scrap souvenirs for 25% of the cost.
BTW, do not feel sorry for these people. This scam is working big time. The canals are lined with new homes and expensive cars so a lot of us are falling into this trap.
    You’ve been warned.
    P.S. I still love Thailand.

Lesson of the Video should be: Never pre-pay a taxi service in Thailand, especially if your taking the ride at a later time.
If you want to book a taxi service to a tourist location, IMO the most reliable/safest way is to do it, is go through your hotel. Or pay the extra $ for an all day taxi driver, someone who will wait for you at the tourist spot. I always try to find a friendly multilingual taxi driver’s card so I can use the same person to take me all around and at the end of the day pay and tip the driver well.
Idk when this was filmed(looks like pre Covid) but since Covid, it seems some Taxi services are trying to pull more scams. It’s been a difficult few years for the people who rely on tourists dollars to live.
Good luck, be careful, & travel smart.

I have to say that we did a booking through the hotel for the floating market. It was a desk on the ground floor doing it, and we still god scammed.
Basically we agreed on 2.500 baht for 2 person to go to Maekong Market (the train market) and then to the Floating Market. The train market everything went fine, but at the Floating, they left us really far away in some spot that just had one agency renting boats to go up the canal. We went there and they asked for 3.000 baht for both, we said we just had 1.500 because we didn't though we would need money at all. They dropped the price to 2.000 and we had to stop on some ATM.
It was awfull as for 1.30h we were on a boat stopping in various shops that we didn't with people trying to sell us things. We stopped at a "coconut farm" that was basically a shop with ATM, the shop owner and the boat guy were pushing us to withdrawl money because we were still owing 500 baht.
When we finally got into the market it was empty since it was already like 13:00 PM...
So really, I do think that in Thailand it's a matter of luck. The better services/tour we got was the ones booked online through TripAdvisor, the rest was pretty much some sort of scam which is sad and actually one of the things that was driving me insane and getting me eager to just go back home.

Thai Government has always been keen on projecting the official image of Thailand as the "Land of Smiles." Imagine, being a foreign tourist, to be forced to undergo such traumatic and utterly distasteful an experience as this one, at the tail end of an otherwise fairly agreeable trip, and coming out inevitably with an altered image of the country. I've been to Thailand twice in the past ten years and some of my very sweet memories are associated with both of my trips. However, I maintain that it's always swindlers like these who not only ruin your trip but also do their best to influence your opinion of the Thai people, who in reality are, by and large, friendly and helpful folks.

I had a similar situation like this in Thailand a few years back. So I told them I worked for the British government which I did, and was meeting the King in the morning (which i wasn't') and naturally his majesty would be displeased to hear I had been up half the night because the taxi firmed had tried to scam me. With that, I was treated like a King, free food, free drinks and the taxi taking me back to my hotel for free.

With the language barrier, we understood "no taxi go in" and "I wait for you here". The idea of him sitting there for a few hours waiting for my friend and I didn't bode well with me so I told him to just leave and we'll find another taxi back later. Fast forward a few hours we discovered we CAN'T get a taxi b/c they're not allowed there. That's why its always wise to know your options on how to get around the city that you're in as well as learning some of the language. Having only 1 option is never wise

Precisely. It's also always good to have a backup plan. Lucky, in our era of the internet, we can do some research and find alternative options or better tips on how to move around in foreign countries. I have saved tons of money just by learning the routes of local buses in Bangkok online. Also, there are always a bunch of expat forums about pretty much every major country. Typically expats living there write useful articles about real life there, unlike Instagram bloggers, who only post pretty picture for the sake of views.

Having been to all these major cities, ironically, most taxi drivers are from Middle Eastern, Latin American, and African countries and they have the same mindset of the third world countries.

Yes, you can get scammed in any tourist destination, but you're 100 times more likely to get scammed in Thailand. Money is God there

Hello, I'm Thai. Really sorry about your bad experience. Really takes a single fish to spoil the whole pond. I hope you did enjoy the rest of your stay tho :)

That is exactly why I avoid the big cities and tourist traps when possible. The people in the smaller cities and villages are not like their city counterparts. I am sure this is true in every country throughout the world.

Thanks for sharing with us. This is something that I don’t want to get involved. They looked kinda rude to the customers and plus not hygiene… im super fan of street food but this is very unpleasant. :/

Chiang Mai really nice. Never had issues. But I think majority of Thai are chill & peaceful n friendly. As you stated corruption makes things too hard. Just try to avoid. Hire car etc. or pre-book.

10:06 is psychopathic behaviour man. I would have avoided those people immediately. When I went to Bangkok I mainly traveled by metro and BTS station, and any taxi I booked via my hotel. Around major tourist hotspots there were many people trying to scam but it was pretty easy to recognise and shaking your head no and keep walking should let them know you are not gonna fall for it. So sorry this happened to you man, I found the country to be filled with such nice people so bad people like this really ruin it for the rest

The floating market was such a disappointment 😢 Not only was it a very long ride from Bangkok, something about that place put us of.....dirty canal water overpriced goods and a very angry boatman who intentionally pushed the boat in such a way...I got drenched in that filthy water. Wasn't funny, but I wondered why his behavior was obnoxious .

When we’re in Thailand, we hired a private driver for $60/day who will take us everywhere, translated for is, and wait for us at every spot. He’s also super nice, and will lend us money until we can get to a bank or ATM.

If there's a tourist, there's a scammer. At some point you just start to distrust anyone that's being nice. Quickest way to ruin a vacation.
If you're paying a large amount of cash, always count it in front of them first and let them take it. The worst scam is when they switch a bill and say you didnt give them enough.

I’ve been scammed doing some shady stuff in Japan. It happens and it’s just easier to take the scam instead of fighting it if the only thing you’re gonna lose is money. And I don’t even think this amount is literally worth fighting over especially if there is a language barrier. Live and learn 🤣🤣🤣

Floating market visit - a one in a lifetime experience for me. Never would think of another one in Thailand. Loved all other places like Krabi, Phi-Phi Island, Koh-Larn, Phuket, Pataya and more of other places in Thailand with lovely nice locals.

It does happen everywhere. It happened to me twice that I can think of in Paris and my ex husband had money taken from his wallet in Paris. But, it was money that I found, so it was sort of free? But, it was three times out of two entire two weeks time in Paris. Also, I was scammed at the Renaissance Faire in St. Louis. And at a carry out Pizza Hut and a taxi service and at a high end restaurant. It was really nice of you to stand up for the lady who who argued for everyone by trying to get the bus to drop everyone off at the same location. She would have been left stranded. That company needs to be reported and put out of business or the employees need to be let go and put in jail. It was not right what they did to everyone. You have evidence. And like you said, "One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch of apples." You had a lot of nice help at the market itself, especially by the vendor showing you where the vegetarian food was located, which was FAR AWAY from his shop. He was really nice. Thank you for this video. ❤🌸👍.

Unfortunately still very common in Thailand! From jet skis, taxi scams , then at the top, Thai airways still owe us £1000 from before the pandemic. Flights that they cancelled and they offered us a full refund.. To this date, never received! You live and learn, Never again!
