  • Part of a series of short videos with hints and tips on various aspects of electronic moisture meter use. Damp meters are a useful tool to aid diagnosis of damp problems, but they should be used with caution. This video was made during a pre purchase damp and timber survey in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation call all cause an electronic moisture meter to raise an alarm. However, moisture profiling, combined with the surveyors skill, training and experience can ensure that an electronic moistire meter is an aid to good diagnosis, rather than impediment to it. .
Here a meter is 'beeping' to indicate a problem when there isn't one and also 'over-reading' due to metal foil behind wall paper. This is not to say meters are not useful; they are VERY useful, provided the limitations of them are understood and all other visual evidence is taken into account too.
There are lots of technical posts on damp diagnosis available on our web site (see above) and via Bryan's blog at www.preservatio...
Please note that these videos are not designed as master classes in damp and timber surveying; they are made on real surveys and real jobs with no script and no re-takes... slight errors and omissions are inevitable, but they do have little gems of information in them which consumers and built environment professionals will find helpful. Damp diagnosis is a specialised activity.
