  • Meet the McLaren Artura!
    It’s McLaren’s first hybrid supercar, and Mat’s got his hands on one to find out whether it has what it takes to compete with hybrid supercar class-leaders like the Ferrari 296 GTB!
    So for starters, let’s check out the design. One thing’s for sure, it’s certainly a looker! Around the back you’ll find an integrated spoiler, two huge (and real!) exhaust tips and a metal cover for the engine. Around the side you’ll find some huge (and real) air vents, and up front there’s a huge front splitter and a smart set of headlights. It’s possible to swap the front splitter and rear diffuser to be made out of carbon fibre (for an extra cost), and there’s a choice of 15 colours to choose from.
    Pop inside and the Arturo’s design is minimalist but impeccably well made. You sit in Alcantara-covered bucket seats that can be adjusted forwards, back, up and down, and there’s Alcantara across the dash too. It also covered the steering wheel, which in traditional McLaren style is kept simple without any integrated buttons. There’s a new infotainment system and set of digital dials, and it works pretty intuitively with settings and features shown across both screens. It may be relatively basic, but it does the job it needs to do.
    Then we have the glorious engine! Hidden under the cover around the rear you’ll find a 3-litre twin-turbo V6 that can deliver 585hp. There’s also an electric motor hidden under the skin, which combines with the engine to produce 680hp and 720Nm of torque. This power is sent to the rear wheels only, and is good for 0-60mph in 3 seconds and a top speed of 205mph!
    So it’s an impressive specimen, but with prices starting from just under £190,000, is it really worth it?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

I was absolutely shocked how fast, fun and predictable that car was. He had done some extra programming, exhaust, intake, wheels and bits so it had a little extra punch. I really hope McLaren solves the reliability and manufacturing issues that are plaguing an otherwise unbelievable car.

      Ehh idk about ahead of it's time. The car was dated when it came out and had a price tag that didn't make sense. It kept up with a Stock GTR on a quarter mile, but that was it. Aside from maybe comfortability and maybe reliability it wasn't that good for the price.

    • @CerberusTenshi
      @CerberusTenshi Před rokem +4

      @@refillz5281 It's not always about 0-60 or the 1/4 mile. And the NSX wasn't built for the track either. It was a great handling supercruiser. It had a usable trunk, creature conforts and was even somewhat econogical. It still managed to do a quick 1/4 mile or the 2.9s 0-60.
      Which was the first car that used 3 electric motors and had real torque vectoring? The NSX. And even those car channel presenters forget, unfortunately, that the NSX exists, whenever they compare a new supercar, that uses the same layout.
      The NSX was there. Ahead of its time, unfortunately totally overlooked by most people until the end of the production was announced and everybody and their mothers rushed to buy one, and most importantly, it was reliable. Ask a Ferrari owner, how often their car is in the shop instead of on the road. McLaren isn't really known for their reliability either. But better than Ferrari.
      Honda showed what is possible. Other companies are copying with newer tech. But the NSX came out in 2016. In car life and technology terms, that's multiple generations.

      @@kingsgarage938 The problem for Maclaren is they already have a reputation for dodgy build quality - allowing press cars out in that sort of condition is terrible PR. Their cars are obviously fantastic in terms of performance, but they really need to up their game, given the competition. I've said it on other videos referencing the Artura, and I'll say it here: I'm a performance car enthusiast and I'm not paid by or biased for/against the car, other than my own experiences. My take?
    Avoid the Artura, at least for a few years and until after it takes the infamous McLaren resale hit.
    I currently own a 650S Spider and I've owned other recent model supercars. I participate in some exotic groups with some very wealthy collectors with whom I've made friends. They let me drive their 720, GT, and Artura (among other glorious things). While the Artura does duel with the GT, simply due to the performance differential and similar price, I would say overall, it is not on par with the 650 and certainly not the 720. Particularly after driving the 650 just prior to the Artura, you can really tell how neutered the Artura feels. I will say the acceleration is quite a bit more linear than the 650, you can really tell the electric motor is there down low, and the DCT seems more responsive than in the 650. While the suspension in the 12c/650/720 requires expensive maintenance (if you don't DIY, like I did), you can really tell the difference in ride compliance and handling in favor of the hydraulic system. And the tiny elephant in the room, that v6 is not pumping out acceptable noise for the price and appearance.
    We did head's up races from a dig and 40-roll, in Mexico of course, and while it was close, the Artura lost to the 650 every time to 130, where we backed off. Though from the dig, it slightly pulled on the 650 off the line for about a car length, then got reeled in and passed between 95-105, with the 650 taking it by about half a car.
    I would take the Artura over quite a few other cars, but if I had to buy it, I would either get a 650 and save yourself 60k, or consider a used 720. Hell, if you're in America, get a C8 Z06. Similar performance, sounds better, cheaper even with dealer markups, and 'murica. Though you lose the Carbon Fiber Tub for structural rigidity on the convertible (which McLaren hasn't announced for the Artura and didn't have for their other 2 hybrids, the P1 and Speedtail, so that's kind of a wash) and the sweet doors.
