Peeta is one the best fictional characters. His emotions are relatable, He is a very normal guy,scared of killing,not a fighter, not wanting any part if this, but wanting the best for katniss. Throughout this movie we question his intentions, but he was always genuine and always is.
We just watched part 2 last night and we are SHOOK. he's definitely growing on us a character!! I hope they dont kill him off in the 3rd film.

Actually Peeta IS a good fighter at "hand to hand" combat and really strong. The only thing is he does not Want to have fight and kill people. He doesn't want to be controlled and manipulated into doing or becoming someone he ISN'T.
In the books it's mentioned that rue reminds katniss of her sister. It's why she is so protective and why the grief hits extra hard.
It's also mentioned that rues district gathered enough money to send her food, but when she died they sent it to katniss as a thank you
I don’t think they explain it super well in the movie, so I figured I’d mention that the reason Katniss wanted to blow up the food is because districts 1 and 2 train their kids to fight, but there isn’t as much emphasis on survival training. They don’t know how to hunt or what plants and stuff are safe to eat. Without the supplies, they might up starving, eating poison plants, or dying from the elements. At the very least, if they don’t die, they’ll be much weaker from lack of proper supplies, so it would be easier for katniss to handle them.

Haymich got that position by winning the 50th hunger games. When you win the game, they force you to be a mentor for the next tributes until there is a new winner in that district. Since nobody from district 12 has won in 25 years, haymich has been mentoring so many kids that just end up dying in the games, Thats why he drinks.
no wonder he cares so much for Katniss, since she’s the first one that he has mentored that has survived
He also drinks because President Snow had his family killed because of the way he won his games. Snow felt Haymich made a fool out of the capital and murdered his family for revenge.
When Katniss father died her mother suffered a mental break and completely shut down. And because unlike children in many other districts, like Rue's, children in district 12 aren't allowed to work in the main industry (mining) there was little Katniss could do and the whole family nearly starved to death. She has never completely forgiven her mother for it and that is why they are so awkward to each other.

The reason the districts hadn’t rioted sooner is their very strict and violent police force combined with being desensitized to the deaths in the hunger games because it had been going on for 74 years. When district 11 saw katniss displaying actual grief for a death in the hunger games, singing to Rue, sobbing over the body, and arranging flowers around her like a funeral they woke up from years of brainwashing and being beaten into submission. You guys are going to love this movie series, and there is a prequel film coming out in November

Man that prequel I am so excited for the movie when I bought the book I just left it sit in a room for a couple of months cuz I was like this came out when President Snow was a kid are we supposed to like feel sorry for this crazy bastard LMAO nah but to be fair he is responsible for making this battle to the death a bit more humane I mean to say that is ridiculous but if you read the prequel book you know what I mean they were basically circus animals back then
I wish they had kept in the fact that district 11 actually sent Katniss bread during the games. It’s the first time a district had helped another. It’s a pretty important turning point. And the bread thing played a really important part of Catching Fire too, but was also left out.

The last tribute Katniss killed, Cato, is talking about how he was trained from birth to be a weapon for the Capitol in his little speech before he gets thrown to the beasts. Which goes for all the other Careers too (Clove, Glimmer, Marvel).While they were cold & sadistic in the film (& book), if it wasn't for the Capitol, maybe Cato & the others could have had a chance at living different lives & becoming different people. At the end of the day, they were also victims of the system too, the same system that pitted all these kids against each other in the first place. His speech is pretty heartbreaking when you take the time to think about the context.

Katniss might not need Peeta physically but she needs him emotionally. You'll see as you continue. He's her emotional center without her even realizing it.

This is my favorite of book series turned into movies. I do feel Peeta throwing Katniss the bread in the rain should've been better explained in the movie though. It's such a profound moment and shows how genuinely caring and important Peeta has always been to Katniss. In the book they are 11 year olds at that point. Katniss' dad had recently passed away. He was their food provider and her mother falls into a deep depression over the loss. Katniss did her best but had gotten to the point she had ran out of stuff to sell and trade for food/money so she resorts to digging through Peeta's garbage cans since his family owns a bakery but his mom catches her and runs her off. She's then ready to give up and die of starvation. After Peeta sees this, he intentionally burns the bread knowing his mom would physically and verbally abuse him for it and she tells him to throw it to the pigs. He checks that his mom isn't looking and quickly throws the loaves to Katniss. He can't walk the bread over to her because he isn't allowed to give food to people for free and his mom has an awful temper. Katniss is grateful for it anyway because this is the first real food they've had in a while and she then associates Peeta with helping her come to the realization that if she wants her family to live, she now has to be the provider and hunt with the knowledge her dad had passed on to her. When Peeta is chosen as the male tribute Katniss feels a great sense of dread because she feels she owes Peeta a debt for saving her and her family's lives.

Peeta burned bread and the most expensive one, the one with nuts and raisins. It had to be ordered and paid in advance because it was too expensive, and only the police could afford it. He went the extra mile, which is why his mother went vivid. After all, it was the best one he could burn. Peeta is sincerely one of the best characters in the series.
The individual who wins does win a nice home and food for their family in a separate area in their District. That is where Haymitch has been living on his own for some time (24 years) since he won his games.
Peeta is authentic with his kindness and is very good with people. Katniss may have helped him win the Games but he won the outside battle, with the Capitol. They love him and love Katniss because of him. I really look forward to you both watching the next film because thats where I think he truly shines.

It's not all ages, fyi, it's 12 to 18 (Ru is 12). It's to remind the districts what will happen to ALL of their children if they ever choose to rebel against the capital again. You guys are rare in that you can see the parallels between the movie and some of what's going on in the world right now, keep it up!

There's a lot from these books that they couldn't obviously get into the movies, tho this is a pretty good adaptation, but the the books had a lot more about the class stuff and poverty, and really make you think a lot about if there's so much available for some people, that if you spread the resources out a little bit we would never have people starving or anything like that because we have enough in our society, but of course we have it rigged so that people who are poor will be fighting amongst ourselves for scarce resources that were made scarce on purpose by the elites, will starve or be homeless just because other people want to be rich. It's pretty heavy stuff for a YA series. It was kind of groundbreaking at the time when they made them because they basically are supposed to be a reflection of what it's like to be in a war on TV where everything is televised and you're out there as a teenager fighting battles and killing people when you're not even old enough to vote sometimes. And all the circus that comes from things like that being televised these days, reality TV and how we're so close to this already (similar to an old story by Stephen King called The Running Man, which got made into a truly awful movie in the 80s, but the short story is amazing). Anyway these books are so good at portraying PTSD that a lot of therapists recommended that families of veterans would read them because then they might understand what their soldiers are going through when they come home again, because a lot of people are so desensitized these days that we don't really think about things like that. It's of course couched in a Sci-Fi young adult premise, which makes it easier for for instance the soldiers' kids to read, but it is supposed to kind of explain things like... A lot of people didn't like some of the subsequent movies because they show PTSD when you have to go back to war after you just barely got home, and how much that terrifies somebody who's got so much PTSD and knows exactly what they're going back to. People who were watching these movies got mad that Katniss is emotional and withdrawn rather than what they consider "tough" like it's some kind of weakness to be all screwed up after all this, but it's very real, and challenges this stupid narrative we have in this society that if you have trauma you're only tough if you just ignore it and march on, that you're not allowed to have emotions or fall apart because of horrible trauma or you are "weak". The final two chapters of the series are actually considered some of the best fictional portrayals of PTSD ever in fiction.
To show the aspect of psychological warfare in this, one of the things that they changed from the books was that these big animals at the end of this film were supposed to each have a face of one of the kids that they killed, so that they get to be messed up in the head as well as being attacked by monsters, and also a lot of how they portrayed Cato, the final guy they had to kill is that he was raised to think that this was his chance at glory and there's no way he can lose, and he just found out that it was all a game, it was all rigged, he's not special even if he volunteered on purpose, and he's probably going to die for their entertainment... and there's no real glory in killing other kids. And so he had a kind of mental break because he realized that he was being used just like everybody else, so he was kind of suicidal by the end because his entire worldview had been turned on its head. It's supposed to show that even the people who were raised to believe in this stuff are actually just as victimized. When you think about it, there have been in over the 74 years over 1,700 kids were killed by this stupid tradition, and some of them are literal children... and all for someone's entertainment, and to subjugate them. And of course the people who "win" are still victims too because of the things they've survived and have to go through. It makes a point and it's a pretty strong one. Like ya'll said, it's basically gladiating, which when you think about it so is football today, or as y'all said, boxing etc. And, a lot of reality TV could go this way really easily, which is just scary. Even the name Panem for their society is based off of an old Roman phrase from Latin which basically meant "bread and circuses" & the idea was that as long as you give people a spectacle to look at and a little bread to eat, they won't riot against their government. Basically TV is the opiate of the masses. Scary stuff when you apply it to our society, which really isn't far off from this.

Some of the districts have kids who train for years and then volunteer. They are called "careers." The poorer districts don't usually have volunteers. Katniss' volunteering was a big event.

y’all are so cool! for some extra info, other districts are wealthier/better off like district 1 or 2 instead of katniss’ district. so that group of asshole kids trying to kill her are called “careers”. their districts send them to like killer school basically - to spice up the games and they usually always win because of the huge advantage they have. also, gale and katniss have had their names in the lil bowl wayyyy extra to trade for more food for their families. and lastly, i don’t think this is a spoiler because they don’t really mention it in detail - but even when you win, yes you get nice food and housing, but the capital uses the winning tributes as lil trophies to parade around. so for instance most of them (still kids mind you) were forced into prostitution or else their families would be killed. there’s a character you meet later who refused and her entire family was killed. or haymitch for example (woody) won the games in a way that pissed off president snow so his family was killed too. plus, all his mentees he’s in charged of have died until katniss and peeta so you can see why he’s an alcoholic.
anyways, sorry for the long thing but it’s a super sad story. but fun to watch! you guys are cute and i’m looking forward to moreeee 😽

Also it doesn't quite explain it but the dog things at the end are actually created from the dead tributes in the book it says they each wear a collar with their district number. And the tear into Cato til the sun comes up but refuse to kill him so katniss shoots him with her arrow to put him put of his misery

Katniss didnt mercy kill Cato right away because she only had 1 arrow left and it was being used to tourniquet peetas leg wound. They couldn't save his leg, but gave him a high tech capital prosthetic. So from this point on in the films technically peeta only has 1 leg

The way it works is that the winners do get a nice new home as well as a good amount of money for the rest of their lives. Their community also gets some extra food, supplies, and privileges for the next year. Where it sucks is that the winners also pretty much belong to the capitol forever. They are paraded around on a victory tour and forced to mentor tributes from their district until one of those tributes can survive and take over that job. There is a reason Haymitch has a massive drinking problem and a chip on his shoulder. He'd been forced to coach tributes and then watch them die since he was a teenager because district 12 never wins. It's normally district one or two that win, as they have kids that are well-fed and have a lot of time to train so that when they are about 16-18 one of them can volunteer at the reaping. Also, If you don't play ball as a victor, the district doesn't always go after you directly. They often go after your loved ones. I believe Haymitch's mother, brother, and girlfriend were murdered shortly after he became a victor because the way he won his game made the capital look foolish. Katniss and Peta are now in that exact same boat. So they have to sell the star-crossed lovers bit or their families and friends will be killed. Peta is actually in love, but Katniss is in survival mode and isn't even ready to think about that. She does care about him though. That's where you get the tension between the two.

Havent seen someone explain the salute. It is an old tradition in district 12 that is rarely used, one of the things it means according to the book is "saying goodbye to someone you love." So the first time they show it at the reaping, they are saying goodbye..

10/10 franchise! Dystopian world of Panem has 13 districts that basically work for the Capitol. Dark yet humorous, romance and games. Uprisings, the lot. Incredible character arch’s, INCREDIBLE CAST. must watch

Those creatures at the end were different in the book they were some sort of vicious dog but it was implied that the dead tributes were part of them cuz the fir was the color of their hair the eyes were the color of their eyes they were similar size to the tributes
They also wore the number of their district on a chair around their necks like a collar

Oh I already know I'm gonna love this reaction and I'm completely new to your channel. I love the hunger games, theres so much important commentary Collins (the author) provides that is often overlooked because of the love triangle - which isnt even a valid triangle of ypu understand the themes on the first place.

Why so skeptical about Peeta. He's the purest character in the series. He was the best of them. That's why Snow went after him.
we weren't trusting anyone in that first movie lol. our guard was up so damn high. Peeta was almost too pure for us to trust him, All to find out we were both "WRONG" *Charlie Murphy* voice
Something they don't mention is if a tribute wins (becoming a Victor) they get showered with food and money and live in the Victor's Village (rich place). But it also benefits their home district because they're also giving more food rations.
It's why district 1 & 2 train their kids up to win. They win, the Capitol favors them.
Also to make sure the hunger games stays fresh in the districts' minds, in six months after the games there's a Victor's Tour where the Victor goes to every district to "showboat". So in May they do the reaping for the games, and in November they do the tour so that in May it's the reaping again. Every year until forever.

Something I didn’t like about the movies: the wolf mutt things that ultimately went after Katniss, Cato and Peeta were the bodies of the dead tributes turned into these mutt things

Each special anniversary of The Hunger Games is different: 25th year each District picked their own boy/girl tribute; 50th year was 2 boys/2 girls and the 75th year was all winners in Catching Fire the sequel. A prequel to the film is in preproduction now about a young Corneilus Snow and how he helped a tribute to start his career. Sadly some tributes which they don't explain in the film but do in the book lead heartbreaking lives. The guy with the sugar cube was used as a prostitute many times by the Capitol Elite. Precursors to this film include The Running Man(1980s) Terminal Island, and Battle Royale 1 and 2. The other parts of the series in order: Catching Fire. The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part one and The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay: Part 2.

The books are so much more traumatic. The scene at the end where the dogs are after them is SO much worse.
If you like Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle is a really underrated movie you should react to. She plays a very different character. It's also got Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Jeremy Renner.

Basically whichever of the districts has the winning Victor that year their district gets some extra food and whatever but the main thing is the winner gets basically a mansion and a separate part of the district were only winners live call Victor's village and basically your new job is training the recruits from your district for the following year you're basically haymitch now and that's just what they tell the public there's a whole dark underbelly to this that you'll learn later as if having two dozen kids fight to the death every year is it dark enough oh sweet summer child to gets so much darker

If you dont know cato the guy at the whose fighting katniss and peeta killed thresh because he killed clove who he was in love with his speech at the end is him realizing that all his life hes just been trained to hunt for the capitols entertainment

There was a rebellion and the losers (the districts) have to send a girl/boy to battle to the death in an arena. The winners live well and have food. All districts are watching and the only children who don't go into the arena, are from the Capital. They put the competitors on display until the games start.
This movie and Idiocracy are the most likely foretelling of society. Sad thing is all arrows point in that direction.

Peeta saved or helped Katniss after she was stung by telling her to go and fighting off Cato, when he saw them and Survived. That is how he was cut by Cato's sword and got injured.
I would had liked if they showed that part in the movie!

If you win your district does get some free gifts for a year. Like new shoes and a free dessert with every meal and stuff. Nothing major but very helpful for poor districts. All right it's like almost 3 a.m. so you know what I'm not going to watch you guys watch catching fire right now I will do that when I get up! I got to say there's stuff I like about all the movies and there's stuff I don't like about all the movies but I got to say a lot of the coolest stuff in the series is probably in the second one the third book was cut into two movies with good reason that is fairly dense it's a whole ass war! The last book is a very different vibe from the first two. And I got to say this a lot of feelings I have about that third book and the movies then I will be telling you all about when you get to those. By the way you know that cat that the everdeen's have his name is buttercup even though he's a tuxedo cat yeah that was incorrect he's actually supposed to be kind of off-white yellowy like the color of a buttercup they actually corrected that in Mockingjay
Yeah, they should be able to bring back food. But they want to reinforce that individualistic, everyone out for themselves kind of culture

Just a friendly tip, you guys dont need the family guy or nutty professor clips inserted. It takes the viewer out of the movie experience. Think about it, you wouldnt want those popping up all the time while you were watching the hunger games for the first time would you?
We love the clips!! We also get a hundreds of comments telling us they love the clips as well. But we do understand it is not for everyone.
