      Thanks! The manual controls worked alright. I've seen them with both directions stacked on top of each other so it's a bit more natural to control, but having them individually works too. Maybe if I had more arms!

    Awesome. For me, it only needs a kind of cover for the tentacle to look more tentacle-y. Maybe some green shiny fabric, or purple? Oh! Oh! And we can put a googly eye on the lightbulb!

      I liked the mechanical look of this since it was so big. I think if I made a smaller one I'd put some sort of covering over it.
      I did definitely think about putting an eyelid over the bulb at the end. Maybe next time!

      That's definitely true. I've seen controls where the two pulleys were stacked so one "joystick" did both up/down and left/right, but making them individually worked just fine too. Would have been easier to control with another person though. Or if I had more arms

    Imagine how cool this lamp would look hanging from a ceiling! With those hand controllers on the wall so it can be played with. I love how this turned out!

    Such an excellent fun thing!!! I need to make something with tentacles now. NEED! YAY!!! (Maybe high-tension fishing line will give you less friction and reduce the strain on the servos? I've used it for animatronics in the past and it was great!! You'll want to pre-stretch it first though.)

      I’d probably use that for a smaller one. I think this was just a lot of weight and friction and things just not being 100% aligned

    Making a tentacle is pretty darn cool by itself but now you also have a lamp you can place in any position. Brilliant blend of form and function.

      @@TheMakerMonster no problem! Have you looked into larger servos? I worked at a hobby shop growing up and have seen some servos that would be up to the task of moving the tentacle around!

    Looks very much like the rigs ILM used for a lot of puppetry and you did an amazing job. I've seen others attempt this and not got nearly such a smooth result. The servos were a little ambitious and I'm willing to bet you knew there was a good chance of them just burning out but if pull handles are good enough for the like of Lucas and Henson then it can't be too bad.

    I love plywood, I love this. Haven't done automata for years and you've really inspired me. What are the little threaded sleeves that fit the hex key bolts called? Be interesting to see if you could set up pressure plates or movement sensors in a room that the lamp responded to. Poor little servo motors. Maybe windscreen wiper motors for some grunt? But good call, finished is way better than permanently delayed. Crafsman sent me here, I'm happy he did!

    This is so many kinds of awesome! I don't know about heads, but you definitely made tails of this. Or a christmas tree at some point. While it looks like a fun build, you have a great and really distracting menagerie in your shop. Which is also a good thing! The only thing the lamp needs now is a Sauron/Fiery eye paint job Thanks for sharing!

      @@TheMakerMonster Oh here's another thought. You can probably do 2 instead of 4. Set it up so that the two opposite side go on the same wheel, and when you tighten one side, the other relaxes.

      That’s actually how it was set up. I didn’t really explain/talk about it but I tried to get fancy and make a two-stage tentacle. So basically the top section could move indecently of the bottom. That’s how I could get the cool ‘S’ shapes and stuff

      That's how it was on the RC controller. One joystick controlled each of the segments. There were two stages so the top part could move independently of the bottom. So I could make those 'S' shapes instead of it all going in one direction.
      I've seen hand controllers where it was basically two pulleys, one on top of the other, perpendicular to each other, so it was basically one handle that did both up/down and left/right. But making individual ones was way easier. Did make the "performance" part a lot harder though.

      It's a hydraulic hose with the end chopped off. Sturdy enough to support everything, but flexible enough to bend and twist.
