  • It was a sword-age, a spear-age - an age when fearsome Northmen, savage Vikings, and mysterious pagans from across the sea haunted the shores of northern Europe. The Swedish pagans, believing in the fate of the old Norse gods, traveled south across the Baltic Sea and deep into modern-day Russia. With their sleek longships, they sailed along the big rivers, ever southwards to reach Miklagard. Miklagard - the Great City - that was Constantinople, where the Swedish Pagans sold slaves and goods from the north for silver and coin. Those who made the long hazardous journey and survived the treacherous country were to be rich men.

The last Sabaton show I went to before lockdown, Atlanta in 2019, about three songs in, somebody in the audience just randomly started going "ohh-OHH-ohh" and in seconds the whole venue was doing it (myself included). Joakim just freezes up on the stage and his head whips around and he's got this deer-in-the-headlights look. He goes, "Ohh, I see, you all think this is a democracy, like you get to vote on the songs. WELL YOU DON'T!"
They did play it later though.

True. However what made them so shocking for the time however was because they were so "foreign" to Christian Europeans they seemed particularly hellish. The fact that these pagans were so effective and didn't give a damn about Christian law or tradition caused such an uproar. It wasnt common in England to burn down monasteries but the Vikings did it, they would break oaths and treaties and take bribes and loot you anyway. The Christians had no way of dealing with this, it was like an existential crisis for them.

So my Swedish Pagans story comes from their show with Nightwish in Vancouver in 2015. I had done a two year intensive course at university and the show fell on the night of the last day of the last showcase for the last semester, the day everything was Done, Finally. I had been relatively sleepless and without days off for two years, and then extra sleepless with final projects and showcase preparations, and then stood about in a cold dusty showcase room with a cold brewing talking a lot to people about my work.
My mom drove me home after the showcase (she'd been in town to see it) and i had just enough time to get changed and get to the venue. I was in full-on "it's over, it's done" .frodo and sam.lotr.gif mode. A little crazy around the edges.
Being THAT excited to see two of my favourite bands on the day I finished a course that intense, and very excited to see it with my best friend, we were having a bit of a "guess the song from the stage banter" game. Joakim started talking about Canada vs Sweden and hockey and how the swedish are better/vancouver's team has often relied on swedish players, and things like this. So I had a suspicion.
And then the first ooh-OH-ooh happened.
You know when you get excited about something and you sort of pat your friend on the arm like -tap tap tap- Oh! Oh!! This thing!
Welllll I got too excited and full-on punched him in the arm and he will never let me forget as long as I live.
For the record he also does not get the excitement about this song, which makes it extra entertaining to me :p
I also sung along to every sabaton and nightwish song at the top of my voice that night, and went out with friends after, ended up getting home at one in the afternoon the next day, and lost my voice so bad I couldn't speak for a couple weeks after. Worth it.

My clearest and most personal memory regarding this song took place after the "Noch ein Bier" Festival at Gelsenkirchen five years ago.
It actually happened after the show on my way home with public transport. Me and two other guys started humming the melody and within seconds the whole crowd turned the bus into a driving concert venue. As far as I can tell, every woman, man and child was singing along. It was awsome.

08.02.2016. in Belgrade, Serbia this band was on a Heroes album World Tour. Concert started with Ghost Division, as usual, and Sabaton played a lot more after this song. While Sabaton played this other songs, the crowd cheered intro from this song (that Ooooooooough, oooooough, ooooguh chorus). Joakim stop the band, tore up bands playlist and they started to play this song right after that. Fun fact: That was the first time they put their TANK as a platform for drums. Thank you Sabaton for very nice memories.
