The late great Leon Russell in the top hat...one of the greatest songwriters in RR
The master of space and time.
Haven’t seen Leon Russell in a longtime.
Leon once was Sinatra's piano player for a few years
Sorry, but Joe liked a doobie or 2. Got caught with a bag of grass when he came to Melbourne, which gave him bag of unnecessary grief. But there's nothing wrong with that, it was the time of rebellion against the staid and afraid generations that came before for Gods sake. I lived in that boring shitty time, and it was an important statement to make against the so called puritanic Christian themes of the 1950s to early 1960s. RIP Joe you were the best!
@@trevorholden7423 they put him back on a plane once or twice, Melb or Syd.
In the days the whole bloody band actually mastered their instrument and made art, without auto tune of whatever. No offence to mod music, but full respect to artists like this in this age
I so agree with you. Before MTV made it about showmanship and the look. These guys were all true artists and musicians. Sometimes the musicians were so into their music they weren't aware of anything else. So inspiring to watch.
Mark NL, it would be my guess you are from England. Only Englishmen say bloody. Love it!
@@sammybeck7794 And Australians. Kiwis too.
Been listening to this song for 50 years, and every time I hear it, I get soulpunched and start crying. Its so very beautiful.
We'll all be listening to it forever. It's something I'll play my kids
No he isn't drunk or stoned. Joe has some awkward movements when he performs, but that's what he does all the time. He gives every ounce of effort when he's on stage.
One of the all-time greats. British born; Joe had more soul in his little finger, than most other artists in the same genre
Sheffield
His hand gestures actually follow every note being played!! Love, love love Joe Cocker.
Oh for gods sake, he was out of his mind on drugs, who are you kidding.
he was stoned off his tits lol
He actually was. Not a secret.
Musically we truly were the blessed generation. We witnessed true masters of their craft, live and in person, spilling their souls out for us at every concert we attended.
I know, it's so true but listening and watching these younger people discover "our" music makes me realize how fortunate we were...quite unbelievable in the scope of talent and quantity of music we had coming at us in our formative years.
I'm 62 and looking back now gives a perspective that one couldn't conceive of back then or even now unless you hear this music through someone hearing for 1st time.
@@karenscigliano9787 totally agree with you. We never realised at the time just how extraordinary it all was.
I kinda love how Joe would play 'air guitar', 'air drums', and pretty much 'air-everything-else-that-only-existed-in-his-own-head'. A tremendous raw talent. Like a force of nature.
You did the best version imo
Joe looks like he's out of control but if you watch him, he controls every aspect of the performance. His band direction is outstanding. And you can tell he LOVES Ray Charles.
I saw someone describe it perfectly: He is playing every instrument with his body.
@Marty's 4x4 always gotta be one asshole. Congrats Marty.
Actually, according to people who were there, Joe was gobbling down anything and everything he was given. Tour almost killed him, but he made it through.
@@steelers6titles not saying he wasn't loaded. He was. But some of it is his act. Like Tom Waits. If you were that messed up, you would be less on top of the music and more like GG Allin. (Rip)
EVERYBODY loves Ray Charles.
Joe Cocker is a music legend that nobody ever talks about for some reason
Let's not overlook the beautiful and gifted Claudia Lennear, who started as a backup singer with Ike and Tina Turner 🎸☮️🕊️✌️🌹
Love Leon Russel. He's calm but had such a unique way of performing. Of course Joe will always be my favorite. I was a teen when these guys hit their prime. We had the best music of all time. No match today. These guys would run them down. We were the peace and love generation. Peace and love man.
I saw Joe Cocker in concert in 1969, about 3 months after Woodstock. I didn’t know who he was at the time but when he came out and started singing it blew my mind.
On the studio version Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin played lead guitar 🎸
I get chills when I see and hear him sing this song. This and Ball and Chain by Janis at Monterey...chills.
I'm a child of the sixties and the seventies, and it truly touches my heart to see younger people like yourself being open to and visiting this time period and the era of music! If I had one wish... it would be for you to somehow be momentarily transported back to those days and to really feel what was going on and to feel the impact of music on a whole generation! Much love to you!
Joe had synesthesia, causing his random movements and literal " feeling" the music through motion. He is an icon.
Thanks for the best performance of this song. Everyone usually grabs the woodstock version🤘❤️
All these years later, his voice still gives me the chills! 😅
I heard one of his backing vocalists asked once,"when you get the phone call to ask you to sing with Joe's band, what did you say?" To wich she replied," That's Joe Cocker man. You say yes!"
The Woodstock version is the one
Thanks for bringing back good memories & a momentary rush to an old lady. Concerts in the 70's were the best.
The three great voices that emerged '65-'69 were the great Blues Rockers: Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker and Robert Plant. Loved forever. Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.
Joe's cover of the Beatles' "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" is also pretty damned good.
Joe Cocker's performance at Woodstock is legendary. You have to see it. When he originally recorded this song. the guitarist was a young session musician named Jimmy Page.
I saw Joe Cocker and the Grease Band at the Baltimore Civics Center on December 7, 1969 when I was 16 yrs old. Along with Janis Joplin and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. I swear this concert changed something in my brain. I know it blew my mind, and music became part of my soul and an intrinsic part of the rest of my life, up until this very day. I love that you expand your horizons and open yourself up to all kinds of music. There is lots of other great Joe Cocker music out there to enjoy. I'd like to specifically recommend a song of his from the mid 80s, "You Can Leave Your Hat On", official video. It is a hoot! Love you guys! ✌❤
Baltimore girl here. Saw some great talent there, all for under $10 a ticket. Jetrhro Tull, YES, Heart, Fleetwood Mac. Etc.
Hot damn now that's a lineup!!!
While listening to this I was doing a mental list of the music we enjoyed during the '60s and '70s. People, we were BLESSED!
I never got to see Joe Cocker live, but I did see the movie when it was first released and it was wonderful! I also was able to catch Leon Russell in concert before he died. He shuffled out on stage like an old man (he was!), sat down at the piano, and exploded! It was glorious!
I saw Leon just before he died too. He sounded great. Also saw Dr. John a couple times.
Joe, like Janis, sang from the soles of his feet to the tips of his hair!
Joe was such a passionate singer. Every performance, every song, he sung as if it was his last and as if he felt Every note and lyric.
I booked Joe Cocker and the Grease Band for University Freshers’ Ball. A night to remember for ever. I would to hear from others there that night.
Legendary artists doing legendary shit. Carl Radle on bass, who would go on to play in Derek and the Dominos, Bobby Keys on sax, the only man to ever get kicked out of the Rolling Stones twice, two legendary drummers in Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon, and the only guy in the world who could have pulled all this together in the time allotted, Leon Russell, The Master of Space and Time. There's a whole Wikipedia full of Rock and Roll history on that stage.
They were mad dogs, and Englishmen.
The first vision of the 2 backup singers at 5:47 shows Rita Coolidge on the right-hand side, with the dark hair and beautiful soulful looks.. Both girls had sublime vocals..
You should have watched the 1969 Woodstock perfomance instead. it's even more gritty. And BTW this is Joe's 6/8 time interpretatation of of Beatles tune song by Ringo Star on the 1967 Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. "Ringo Who?" Oh...God help me...😂
One of the best concerts I ever went to was Joe Cocker live in the early 70s at the old Sydney stadium.
We were dancing in the aisles and on the seats.
The place was out of control.
Amazing experience
This came out when I was 15. Leon Russell and Joe Coker were our party music on Saturday nights among other great singers back in the 70s. Leon Russell was high most of the time ha ha!
I first saw Joe in 1972 at Western Springs stadium in Auckland NZ. He was so blind drunk that I was one of approximately 20,000 people who walked out. I cautiously went to his concert at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in approximately 1990. He was fantastic. I forgave him!!!!
36 yrs ago 12 year old me first heard this song as the intro for "The Wonder Years" tv show and instantly fell in love with it and as I got into my teens watching Joe Cocker at the original Woodstock and then again at Woodstock '94 really made me appreciate this masterpiece.🔥
I really love the female back-up singers, enough to make a grown man weep, the way they held each others hands and were totally and spiritually connected! And I gotta imagine the genius behind this mammoth musical direction must be the very talented Mr Leon Russell. But let's not forget or overlook the absolutely gut wrenching performance from Mr Joe Cocker, a legend in his own time. RIP Joe, I miss you so goddamn much buddy!
Joe went on to have a great career well into the 90's.
Hey you guys, I know this one blew your minds, but I got another beast of a jam that will blow your minds. Try Leon Russell at the Concert for Bangladesh doing the "Jumping Jack Flash/Youngblood" medley. The stage was a collection of GIANTS including Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and and ARMY of other performers! I guarantee you metal heads are gonna LOVE it! 🎸☮️🕊️✌️🌹
Great idea and a natural next step!
@@davidburton2381 Thanks for saying 😁 I was there for both shows, it was a life-changing day indeed! 🎸🔥✌️
Yes the "Jumping Jack Flash/Youngblood" medley is some great Leon Russell.
Everything you are enjoying now I grew up listening to Saturday afternoon American Bandstand then Soul Train
I got to see Joe and Mad Dogs and Englishmen in the early 70's (not long after returning form Vietnam). Yes folks, I was blessed to be back and there. Semper Fi.
That is a show done by a pro !
Joe is LEGEND !!!
and, yeah … he was high af 24/7 🤣
there’s a great interview with his wife from after he passed … his last concert was magNIFicent !!
He pulls those vocals out of his soul, masterful performance.
Yesterday's artists, collaboration,
Today's artists, confrontation.
You choose the right video!!! Classic!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Most of the musicians were recruited from the Delaney & Bonnie with Eric Clapton tour which ended in December of 1969.
Saw him so many times…….Leon Russell was amazing himself. He was a great song writer and composer plus an impressive musician.
Once in forever voice. This cover he made his own
8:17 that face screams, why would you pause it now. Best version of this song by anyone, ever.
Three words: Boom Shaka Laka. Rest In Peace Mr Cocker
Met Joe back in 1988 on his Australian tour.
One of the nicest guys if you ever had the chance to meet.
Thanks for the fun and laughs.
Shitty Frank zappa was a boring clown and an ignorant, like his desperate zappa fans, hahahaha
Even if you have no idea what words he is singing, you can't mistake what he's saying. He meant every goddamn syllable.
Don't forget it's a Beatles masterpiece !
Joe Cocker took that song & made it his own
One unique performer-there will never be another Joe Cocker-miss you Joe-check out the Woodstock rendition of this song
First concert I ever saw. Opening act was Mountain w/ Lesley West. I walked in a square and left a Hippie.
I found the record "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" in my father's collection when I was a child... I fell in love with the music! My father and I managed to see Joe and bands about 5 times in the land of Australia... it became our thing, you know, Joe's in town, we going? Take time out to listen to the album (it's a double, and pure bliss!). Much kudos to Leon Russell, as he was the band and musical master.
There is an amazing video of Ray Charles did Joe Cocker singing Feeling Alright. Joe Cocker was a one of a kind and that voice omg what can you say? He said because he never played an instrument moving the way he did was his way of feeling the music.
It was such a spiritual atmosphere they could have had an altar call and people would have flooded the front end!!HAHA. One of the greatest of all generations, Mr Joe Cocker. I had the pleasure of watching his performance at Woodstock in 1969!!
This is great , but it's got to be the Woodstock version, next!🙃✌R.I.P. Joe, and Leon!
Eine der größten Stimmen der Welt !
I saw them in NYC at the Fillmore East. Amazing! Saw Joe and Leon many times after. RIP Joe and Leon.
A remarkable performance by Joe, just one of many
Joe Cocker was fantastic, his delivery is brilliant, such soul. You must watch the movie "Mad Dogs and Englishmen".
RIP Mr. Cocker.
I noticed one of the back up singers was Jennifer Warnes who had a duet hit with Joe later on - “ Up Where We Belong”.
Joe took us to church.
Thank you so much for reviewing! I never heard this version. Those background singers are amazing!
One of my all time favorite singers. Saw him twice. Blew me away everytime. Once
with Janis Joplin. No one like him.
One of a kind! He always put everything into it. Loved that look back You two!!
Hey guys!!!! I saw him live. Amazing, and was an amazing weekend. Friday, Brian May and Joe Cocker; saturday Ratones Paranoicos and Keith Richards, Sunday Paralamas do Suceso and B'52s. Amazing weekend, but Joe is incredible. Greettings from Argentina
That heavy, soulful drum beat you hear over the sung verses was the late, great--and tragic--Jim Gordon. If that note alone doesn't tear your soul from your chest you must not have one. A soul, that is, not a chest. Everyone's got a chest.
These were great times to be alive, saw these guys live at a small college in Pa in '70. What a
Concert! My generation really loved music
Even The Beatles loved this version.
Your introduction alone deserves a thumbs up
Possibly one of the best rock performances, ever...🤩
Joe had so many people in his entourage, that when he returned home, he was broke. Seriously, he had to sleep on the couch of a friend of his. Unfortunately he had little control over his finances, his life in general. He finally met his future wife and together they bought property in Northern Arizona and she took care of him. Later in life he was asked to perform for the Queen which was a great honor. He feared though that he couldn't perform but when it was time he hit every high note and gave the performance of a lifetime.
John Belushi portrayed him on a Saturday Night Live skit where he had the scraggly hair, a tie-dyed t-shirt as he exaggerated the movements that Joe Cocker makes when he's performing. It was pretty funny. Joe Cocker had a good laugh about it
So funny for an old guy like me to listening to someone who never heard of the Greatest Soulful Singer that ever came out of the UK. Joe Rocked the seen for 5 decades. Nobody did a better live show. Do yourself a favor and check out some of his great live performances here on CZcams. Loved your Reaction.!!
One of the best...greatly missed.
Saw them a number of times. There were friends, toddlers, puppies, etc. just walking around on stage. Looked like a commune decided to tour...Awesome!
Leon Russell was an integral part of the Wrecking Crew and was a very well known session player. Having connections likes that probably made gathering the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour.
One of my top five all-time favorite songs is Leon Russell's "Lady Blue."
Such a classic - greatest rock voice ever - bar none!!!
Great one.
Awesome clip of Joe at his best :)
The Woodstock footage of this song is just as epic. The girls singing couldn't get to the show on time so the band members had to fake the higher pitched voices and it turned out pretty epic.
Another reason they were able to pull the tour together in such a short time is everyone in that day and age loved Joe and wanted to perform with him. There are some top headliner type performers in that band behind him and amongst the backup singers.
I'm turning 30 in four months and I cannot believe still thanks to my parents I was blessed to see this guy live 3 times. We had the Joe, Mad Dogs & Englishmen LP at home when I was growing up and I absolutely LOVE the Space Captain. But the 2013 tour rendition of this song is definitely also worth checking out, I love how his delivery changed with time.
Joe Cocker's first album is awesome!
Nobody, and I mean nobody sang as hard as Joe Cocker!!!
I agree with everything Greg said, but I would go one step further and just say that this is WAY better than the original. Not criticizing the Beatles at all. If anything, this is a tribute to what brilliant song writers they were.
They did what they had to do at the time, make a great pop song, and they achieved that. But Joe took it to another level, probably the level it needed to be at.
You guys reacted to another Beatles cover, Help by John Farnham. John also slowed the song down, giving it the emotion it deserved.
Song writer Jimmy Webb (Galveston, MacArthur Park) once said that a good song always finds it's own rhythm. I think Joe and John found the right rhythm these Beatles songs deserved.
PS He was AWESOME live!!
I saw this live, simply amazing show..
Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" will go down as one of the best live albums of all time! If you two like his voice he puts it all out there for this performance! Plus, many of the same band members you see here participate in this once in a lifetime get together! CHECK IT OUT!!
Back, at time in history, love was in the air ,You could hitch-hike anywhere, even if it was ,only 19 blocks down the street
This is one of those few times that the cover is better than the original The other one that comes right to mind is Sinead O'Connor's cover of the Prince song "Nothing compares to you"
Holy christ, i wish i was there. Prob the most exciting performance of all rock🤘❤️. Along with a true showman- leon russel
An excellent version, but his scream was better in the Woodstock '69 version. The ambience of a crowd with a few hundred thousand "friends" just made it more EPIC!
