    I currently drive a white ST-3 model which I bought in 2018. The local dealership contacted me on Thursday about a replacement since my agreement is nearly up - the figures were crunched, and they came back wanting a rather eye watering figure, just over £500 a month for one of the new 2.3 ST's. I said absolutely no way. The only 2.0 litre engine option for the ST now is diesel. Looks like I'm going back to a more "normal" car after having two ST's. A bit of a shame, but it is what it is. I don't think many people will buying the new ST's at those costs - if I was paying £500 a month I'd want all the goodies the RS has.

    This type of comparrison always puts the automatic in winning position. In real life, say rolling start full throttle-right rev for it (NOT average rev for manual vs kickdown for auto) manual would leave automatic behind. Always. It just lays more power on the road and more directly.

    • @Zaucey
      @Zaucey Před 2 lety

      I hate to say it because I definitely advocate saving the manual… but your statement just isn’t true like it was just a few short years ago. When manufacturers started getting away from the awful 4 speed auto “slush box” and into 6/7/8 speed super close ratio with a lightning fast milliseconds long gear changes from an automated single or dual disc clutch, these transmissions started to rival numbers of their manual counterparts. I remember reading magazines as a kid and seeing all the new cars performance numbers… the manual was almost ALWAYS .3 or so seconds faster to 60 and roll on from 45-100 was always faster also. I hate to say it but times have changed and computers that change gears for you will always be faster. BUT!!! Are they more reliable? Absolutely not. And most importantly (especially to me), which gearbox is way more fun than the other? Which one makes you feel way more in tune and “connected” with the car? Hands down the manual trans every damn time. Idc about the .5 second I lost to 60 because I had to shift my own gear. Clicking a button on the back of a steering wheel is about the numbest thing imaginable vs having a shifter directly connected to your transmission while feeling those vibrations and the audible clunk into the next gear. Having an auto because it’s faster is like saying I’d rather have brakes that feel like a complete sponge half the time because they have a high friction coefficient and never fade… it’s just not worth it. Be a man, shift your own damn gears. 😂 this went from “I’m on your side but you’re wrong” to a full on love story. My bad y’all 🤷‍♂️

      @mik3952 Před 2 lety

      @@Zaucey You may be right, who knows. All I know is that I owned both manual and automatic (AT, DSG). We all agree DSG is a fast gearbox, right? Well, imagine I tried to follow a manual diesel Golf VII 2.0 150bhp with my 1.4 TSI 170bhp Jetta on a single band road (meaning several overtakes). Although my DSG was in Sport mode, it just was not fast enough when the other car went overtaking. It was frustrating! On a straight line I was so much faster than him, bun on this, my car seemed just slower than his. It was only when I started manual shifting my DSG that I could keep up with him. He had the torque advantage and the picking moment of overtaking. My DSG was just couldn't decide in several moments and that cost me a position compared to him. And I have to say that TSI engine was damn genius otherwise.

  • @FalconXE302
    @FalconXE302 Před 3 lety +10

    I test drove both as I was quite excited that it came out in auto also... but driving the auto was completely underwhelming... I thought the gear box tune would be quite snappy and sporty... absolutely not. The auto version destroyed basically everything this type of car is good for. Ford should have used a DUAL (or single) CLUTCH automated manual gearbox for those who can't change their own gears. Then they would have been able to retain some of the "manual feel".
    The manual however... so good I bought one (and the car)...
    I do my own heel and toe, but having the rev matching at times is great fun and the crackles and pops... makes you laugh. The gear shift is quite short and very precise.
    I test drove the new Fiesta ST first, and it was so much better than the previous ST... which I had owned for 5 years... and then when I test drove the auto ST Focus, it's complete underwhelming feel, made me think I would be buying the Fiesta ST... but the manuals ST Focus... it was everything and more that I thought it would be.
    Yeah... wheel spin in the manual is an issue in 1st & 2nd, but when you have tyre temps up to 35 or higher (I bough an after market TPMS), the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S do the job
    The auto is easier to get a better 0-100 time, but the manual is quicker given a good start... and that's a skill that is fun to learn.
    I'm sure the auto owners will have a blast... but to me, a Hot Hatch really needs to be an old fashioned manual.

      The main differences are that the ST doesn't have that customizable drive mode where you set each category (engine noise, LSD, etc), while the N has worse NVH and has that annoying axle trample.

If we all contact them, maybe they'll realize it's a profitable business decision to bring the Mk4 Focus ST 6 spd manual transmission to the US/North American market. Wouldn't hurt to ask for the Fiesta ST and/or the Puma ST 6 speed manual as well!

    Why show off road price? Who buys a new car and doesnt 'on road' it? This car is nowhere close to $45K and you simply cannot buy it for that so that makes it a lie. It is $50K all day everyday. Stop it with this stupid Plus On Road Costs crap. Why not price it at $30 plus engine and wheels then? Because that would be just as stupid is why. Use the actual on road price from the cheapest state and call it Drive Away Price from $51,953 which is what it actually is. The duties difference and dealer delivery between states is so minimal it bears not considering anyway so don't start with that old chestnut to explain this stupid industry spiel.

      @@CathodeRayNipplez We can't really provide 'on-road' prices because it depends on a lot of things. States and territories are different, for example. And what about options and paint colour? The MLP base price is the easiest way we can show a consistent baseline figure. In the past we didn't show the price at all because of such variables, but we had a lot of requests to show it. Would you like us to remove it?

      @@CathodeRayNipplez Does that help the customer? The chances of somebody buying the exact same specification isn't as broad as what the MLP covers. We get your point, but we also have to adhere to legal implications. Mentioning the base price is something we can consistently provide without running into issues. That's what the MLP/RRP is there for.
      At the other end of the argument, there's also a chance the on-road price turns out to be cheaper. We have customers through our partner business that have managed to score deals lower than the MLP. It just all depends.

    If you can't drive a manual car, you should cut your license in half and buy yourself a fucking bus ticket!! 🤦🏻‍♂️
