Fram oil filters cut open to see how well they filter

- It's been awhile that I was setting up this video to finally be filmed.
I work at an establishment that recovers used oil and Filters. I knew a few of the patrons that frequently bring in oil and filters, I asked a few who use Fram Extra Guard if I could get them to write down the information on how many km the filter was used and what type of vehicle.
It is nice to see I finally got the 4 filters I wanted.
Let me know if this video was good, I have so many more patrons I can bug to get other numerous oil filters. Thanks for watching.
Interesting, but I don't think looking for stuff on the media is the best way to judge a filters performance. I believe going over the filter's construction and how it held up is by far more important. Are the cleats on the media nice and even? Are there any gaps or holes? how well did the glue hold up? Does the bypass valve still operate smoothly? Does it still seal well? How are the endcaps? do they still fit snug on both ends? Are there any visual signs of damage and degradation? I believe these things are more representative of the performance of the oil filter. The filter media is not terribly different from one make to another. Still, was a nice video~
Thanks Aco, I will remember your recommendations in my next used filter openings.😉
I am surprised that they held on for this long but I don't get why some have a metal strip and some don't.
Thanks Bud, the metal strip was nice but then I to was surprised to see no metal strip. I was also expecting the filters to be in worse shape than they were.
I used the orange ones for years back in the day when i did 3k oil change but now i use the Ultra Synthetic as i go 5k with synthetic oil. The Ultra Synthetic's are only about 4 dollars more so i use the best. Thanks for the teardown
I do still like the ultra Synthetic, I'm not a hater of the orange can I just st think they can be better.
All look like Fram orange cans (EG) to me. Metal crimp seam or not, as long as still intact, all good. Yeah, metal crimp gives the warm fuzzies. 3614, crazy story. Gong to the dealer to swap out the orange can for MC 😮 Guess they just changed the filter, oil would need to be added too. The orange can, while not my favorite, ok for standard 3-5k(max) mi. interval. Thanks for the effort.
Thanks Faxmen, I may have more of these openings in the future, will see who I can convince to work with me.
@@user-bk1wt1kg4o Not sure to whom your comment directed, but re-reading my comment, no insult intended or implied to bg&g. If comment about the 3614 story, yeah, that is crazy story, imo.
@@faxmen09 sorry Faxmen I think I took it the wrong way. I am removing my post.
@@user-bk1wt1kg4o All good.
Hey Bill, good video, i would like to see some more vids like this. Ill donate my filter from my truck next time im in.👍
Thanks Stan I'll be looking forward to the filter.
Funzeez bro! 3000 miles on conven oil is quite enough. 100 hours on a gen over 50% is enough to get dark.ardvark! Don't bark. Lol
Thanks Loren, we see so many who really don't understand that conventional oil is good unless pressed beyond it's limits.
People on BITOG worry that their oil filter goes into bypass often. When cold, hard accel etc. I don't think that you would find as much crud in the bottom of the filter if it did. I think that it would wash back into the engine. Whadya think?
That's a very good comment, if the bypass opens then definitely there would be some unfiltered oil moving back through the engine. I don't think that the bypass opens as much as some believe. Today's oils are very fluid to move through the engine efficiently, takes a bit of pressure to open that valve.
Science at it's best. For appalachia maybe.
Thanks for watching.
This is cool! Although doesn't say much about how fram oil filters filter oil. Different engines with different milage will definitely put out different debris. Still good to see they do filter something still! Otherwise there would likely be metal in the inner portion too.
If you clamp the paper in a vice or squeeze it, it will become a lot more clear (and drain excess oil from filtering element).
Thanks for the suggestion, I will give that a try.👍
I have a PH8A, so huge
Yes that would is a big filter, I once had a Ford truck that took the ph8a.
@@crazybillsgarage I was trying to figure out why the Ford filters were heavy, I think your video showed it was glue! LOL
Id almost bet that most people go by the oil life monitoring system these days instead of paying close attention to the miles. That could be the reason of the higher mileage on the filters.
So true, most people forget about the lifeblood of the engine, and yes many have fallen for the oil monitoring system to change there oil. Many vehicles die early from these systems. Thanks Maynard.
that last filter is not that many miles some of the companies are recommending 7500 or 10000 miles on oil changes with synthetic oil which is really crazy. the mileage on highway is way less wear than city driving because you are going 2000 rpm on the highway doing 65 mph and in city you would be doing same 2000 rpm doing 30 mph so the revolutions are less than half what the highway miles are for same miles traveled and you don't have as many stops and starts where most of wear occurs.
Yes that is correct but he doesn't use Synthetic, he uses conventional which I hope he switches to Synthetic.
i bet oil changes are expensive and a pain he must be doing 4 or 5 a year with that mileage@@crazybillsgarage
@ranger178 yes oil changes are expensive where we live, he does do them himself.
I would expect that most filters you see there would have mostly Hy Way miles on them . Much easier on oil and filters than all city driving . Would explain the higher numbers 🤔
Thanks Looney, yes I believe that most of the patrons here are mostly highway driving. They should still use a synthetic type oil though if they want to let there oil changes go so long.
@@crazybillsgarage True 😃
It's still the orange can of death to me. My Jeep had one on it when I got it and I switched to WIX and gained 5 PSI of oil pressure.
I understand, Fram doesn't have good reliability in the orange can.
wow that is crazy low mileage on that buick do they only change filter every year and a half or something?
As far as I know, the car is driven maybe once or twice a month now.
You mean extra guards are ok filters? They don’t automatically blow up engines? It has everything to do with maintenance? Wow! 🤦🏻 people are so misinformed it’s sickening
I have cut many Extra guard filters open, I have yet to find one that has come apart or ruptured. They get the job done. Thanks Steven great comment.
@@crazybillsgarage just annoys me when people make false claims with no backing
@stevenbettez2017 I was a Fram orange can hater at one time, my opinion is softening of the orange can the more I open them up.😉
@@crazybillsgarage just like any filters they have their limit. People abuse them with not maintaining their vehicles
@stevenbettez2017 that is all the way true. Better maintenance would save a lot of vehicles.
I go 7K everytime
But your probably regular at oil changes at 7000, do you use Synthetic oil
Those orange cans of death...."Avoid the orange can, Avoid the FRAM " should be the motto
Thanks Great slogan.😅
🙄🙄🙄
found the Fram Filters :D OH Boy
Fram are definitely used the most in Canada, Fram are cheap here. Thanks Mario.
