Why Are Chili Dogs Sonic's Favorite Food?

- Why does Sonic the Hedgehog love chili dogs so much? Who came up with this idea? Regardless, in almost every version of Sonic media you can see Sonic eating chili dogs so I wanted to dive further into this and see where this came from. Also as a fun project for the New Year, why not make a chili dog of my own.

Happy New Year! Thanks for all the support for Origin Oracle this year. On to bigger things in 2023.
In the 1988 movie about Felix the Cat, that was a huge IP in post-war Japan as the devs were growing up, Felix mentions "hot dogs with sauerkraut". This would be the hot dog modification of the trendy Reuben sandwich from New York.
Which would be one of the many things one could attach to a character, to come off as hip and cool. As well well as any allusions to Christmas, an island named "Christmas Island", or songs that sound like Christmas hits they always release for easy money, such as the synth songs in the movie soundtrack including 'Together Again', or the JRPG sounding 'Face to the Wind'.
You should ACTUALLY watch the movie and make a list on everything similar to Sonic, because they're WILD.
Happy New Year :)

Sonic: **Delicately suckles the end of a chili dog.**
For those unaware, in the USA there's a fast food restaurant chain called Sonic. Guess what they're renowned for? Their chili dogs. Might very well be where the initial idea came from.
And yet neither of the movies partnered with them
@@helixsol7171 , I know right! It's such a missed opportunity!
Coincidence? If only.
@@helixsol7171 That's because Sonic's the restaurant hates Sega and Sonic the Hedgehog.
@@jordanwhite352wait they do?!
There was a Sonic-themed pop-up café in Japan a few years back. There was a meal themed after each of the main characters. Sonic's was -- you guessed it, a chili dog with a side of onion rings. "Tails" had a carbonara, Shadow's was black forest cake, and Amy's was red velvet cake. Robotnik had an omelette.
Now I'm curious what the hell a black forest cake is
Edit: JUST LOOKED IT UP AND I NEED ONE RIGHT THE FUCK NOW HOLY S H I T (also that's clever as hell on their part, as the colors of the cake are primarily dark brown with white layers and red cherries on top, which is basically Shadow's color palette.)
@@exist4046 It's also known as the cake from the end of Portal.
Not the omelette😭🤚
Shadow's meal was black curry, not black forest cake as I previously indicated. But yes, black forest cake would have been equally fitting. And yes, the cake GLaDOS promised was a variant of black forest cake, as sold by this one bakery in Seattle.
@@bitwize I wonder if there's any other place that HAS done something like that to have confused you at all? Like, the cake is SCARILY similar in color palette, and Shadow's even said he likes chocolate cake before in an old Twitter takeover thing, so it would make a lotta sense for him to be portrayed with that lol. If they haven't, they absolutely should.
To this day, I think the biggest mystery about Sonic is this:
Why haven't Sega and Sonic (the fast food chain) collaborated yet? I mean, think about it. A blue hedgehog named Sonic who loves chili dogs partnering with a fast food chain of the same name that literally sells them as one of their main products. I'm just saying, it would make a lot of sense
RIGHT?!?!?!
You, me and my friend are all of like mind.
As someone who used to work in the video game industry I can tell you right now from first 10 experience is because Sonics the restaurant hates Sega and Sonic the Hedgehog mascot.
@@jordanwhite352 o o f
This is the question for the ages. You'd think with the recent movies a move would have been made to advertise there.
I don't know why they chose chili dogs exactly, but irl hedgehogs are obligate carnivores (they strictly eat meat, in their case it's comprised of mainly insects and scavenged meat). Chili dogs are definitely meaty and the beans add extra protein, so I like to think it's a meaty treat that naturally appeals to him.
Can almost guarantee the people who came up with this did not go through that level of thinking, but this is just a reasoning I like to think about! I love hedgehogs just as much as I love Sonic.
No, hedgehogs are considered omnivores. They can eat carrots and other vegetables, just in really small amounts. But yeah, their diet is tricky, since most people ignore the amounts of proteins they need and assume that they are rodents. They don't know wild ones can eat mice, lil snakes and frogs. Either way, I agree with you on why he eats chilli dogs. He also loves spicy food due to his personality (maybe, as he's really fast he needs a bigger caloric intake?)
@@berserker3414 Who knows?
Its a Sales Pitch, Real Turtles don't eat pizza
@@shadowopsairman1583 I really should have recording that turtle I caught mawing on a pizza crust.
I only got into Sonic because I love hedgehogs, lol. I always figured Sonic's chili dogs were made of ground up mealworms, as befits an insectivorous hedgehog.
Sonic is why I tried chili dogs initially, and let me tell you I'm absolutely OBSESSED with them.

Something worth noting is that they probably gave Sonic a favorite food since almost every cartoon character around that time frame had one. I think it was the Ninja Turtles' obsession with pizza that really kickstarted the whole trend.
Or garfield's love for lasanga
@@nyancat.123 my favorite fast food…. lasagna
Bugs Bunny kick started that YEARS before the turtles
One could argue that Winnie-the-Pooh was one of the first anthro animal characters to have a particular type of food preference.
I like to think that sonic is aware of what goes into a chili dog, and only suggested it for her as a threat.
OH MY FRICKING GOD!!!! 0o0
That was my first thought.
Now I need a terrible comic of Sonic buying $1.50 Chili Dogs at Costco.
Woah it’s Kenny Lauderdale of VHS fame!

I've always found this little tidbit of Sonic lore interesting. Like, what likely started as a running gag in the western cartoons is now a universally accepted part of the lore. You don't see that everyday. As a side note, I remember the cartoons are what first encouraged me to try chili dogs as a kid because I wanted to be more like Sonic XD
"character is suddenly assigned a random food as a favorite for no reason yet it becomes intrinsic to their character" is a surprisingly common trope. Hell I literally did that with my character Pyro, I was RPing as him and outta the blue I had to decide on a favorite food so I just went with bread. Now it's an entire fucking part of his personality. It's just a quirky and fun thing tbh.
@@exist4046 maybe when that favorite food is assigned by the character's creators, but I've found in cases like this, where you have an eastern and a western interpretation of a character, the western interpretation gets dropped entirely. Especially when that interpretation comes from an unofficial source like the cartoons. Think about it, Robotnik's old designs have never come back, the Freedom Fighters have been mia since Archie ended, nothing from those cartoons have appeared in any official Sonic media except for his love of chili dogs XD Best comparison I can think of is the old Mario cartoons giving him a love of spaghetti and pasta, but as far as I can remember, Nintendo's never officially acknowledged Mario having any sort of love for spaghetti even though it's still a pretty common joke online.
@@captainkatagon5112 to be fair, a lot of the old stuff not coming back is thanks to Pender-fucks, though I get what you mean! I miss the weird chicken robot from that one Sonic cartoon, I watched that one when I was a kid and I'm very nostalgic about it
Oh my god same! I just loved to play and watch sonic, when I saw he like chili dogs .....NUM NUM NUM!
This what I always believed the cause was, so I could be wrong.
In the 80s, chili dogs were seen as a 'cool kid' or 'mall rat' snack. In the DC comics, the 'edgy' Robin, Jason Todd enjoyed chili dogs. The 90's sent cool things to the extreme so they pushed it more.
As a kid, I thought chili dogs were what gave him his speed and he had to keep eating them so he wouldn't lose it.
Me too
I swear that kinda happened during an episode in Sonic X, but I could be misremembering thing lol.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, one of the obstacles in Casino Night Zone resembles a chilidog with relish (green), then turns yellow and finally red when collided with by Sonic or Tails. Like it's got a bunch of toppings but they're licking off layers from top to bottom instead of taking bites of it LOL
That may have somewhat inspired Sonic's love of chilidogs specifically.
Also, hedgehogs are omnivores and hot dogs have a reputation for being made of random bits of garbage meat and plant fillers. Chili is also a great way to hide leftover or near expiration ingredients around a kitchen. Sonic would probably have loved chilidogs just as much had he been an opossum, a skunk, or a raccoon.
Thank you for mentioning this. I thought I was the only one who remembered those and was beginning to feel like I was losing it after seeing no one else posting about them. As a kid, I've always assumed that zone was the origin of the chili dog since it predated any of the DIC shows.
Confession: Sonic is the reason I started enjoying chili dogs in the first place
You are not alone. I actually tried chili dogs myself because of Sonic. To younger me, Sonic was my Videogame hero, and so I when I found out that Chili-Dogs were a real food, I figured if Sonic likes them, I might like them, too, so I wanted to try it. In short, I fell in love with them, and I have Sonic The Hedgehog, and of course Sonic the fast food chain to thank for that.
Wow I knew Sonic loved Chilly dogs but that thumbnail is telling a much deeper story😂
Y E S
When you see mushrooms that grow big, canned food filled with solar energy, fruits like apples that increase life, pellets that can prey on ghosts, etc., the character's favorite food is a chili dog instead of a donut that looks like a ring. I think it's amazing
Come to think of it, I heard somewhere that Rayman likes waffles and chocolate, and Bomberman likes watermelon.
As someone who has diligently followed Sonic's history since 2000, having seen AoStH and SatAM and having collected the Archie Sonic Comics for years, I can't begin to tell you how exciting it was seeing they finally included Sonic's love for chili dogs into the lore like. Man, I wish I can go back and feel that excitement for the first time again!
Also, love the MonHun shirt!! 🍖
They first publicly introduced the chili dog in issue #0 of Archie's Sonic The Hedgehog.
🌭Published in 1992. The TV show didn't start airing until 1993.
Archie's Sonic issue #0 was part of a 4-part mini series before the mainline series started. I was a kid when I got this issue and remember them introducing Uncle Chuck & his chili-dog stand. Sonic did the deliveries. And the love of chili-dogs was introduced.
"So either Sonic has no idea what Chili Dogs are made from or he's an absolute savage"
I have a third proposal that the sausage is actually a vegan sausage.
I’d love Sega to confirm this somewhere 😂
That's what I always thought but I think he's cooking some kind of meat in the Monster Hunter DLC art?
Well a human eating animals like cows, fish, and so on isn't that different from an anthropomorphic, intelligent Hedgehog also eating those animals. They're just also animals that won the evolution game.
Or they're just mutated.
@@SpagettiSpeltWrong But aren't cows, fish, pigs etc also sentient/intelligent in Sonic's universe, like himself?
Then why the hell , didn’t Tails bring it up , you’d think he’d tell
Sonic …..
I never really questioned before because Sonic is a product of his time which is the radical 90s and a chili dog is probably the most out-there kind of fast food that I can think of. As a kid I saw chili dogs referenced in other 90s media like Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Goof Troop. It’s characteristically rebellious as an edible and I think it was another effort to make Sonic stand out more against the shroom and pasta-loving Mario.
I also didn’t try chili dogs until college because I didn’t like hot dogs until then. They are an absolute guilty pleasure of mine.
Sonic is the true glizzy gobbler.
There's an old Chilidog recipe that was featured in the original Sonic the Hedgehog comics by Archie back in the early 90's decade that can be found online if you search for it. I've never tried it, but I would assume that it is good, lol. This, of course, doesn't explain why Sonic loves Chilidogs. Honestly, if the creators decided on Chilidogs as Sonic's favorite food, I would assume that a likely reason might be because the food wasn't taken yet. What do I mean by that, you're probably wondering. Think about this concept: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle loved Pizza. The Street Sharks (something of a rip-off regarding the style/format of the TMNTs) loved burgers, to differentiate them from the TMNT. Beavis & Butthead seemed to love nachos. Perhaps the creators of Sonic thought that Chilidogs wouldn't have been taken, and therefore, would be a good choice since many cartoon characters loved a certain food type. Food seems to be no different than a style of clothing for the characters. Maybe Sonic just loved Chilidogs because the creators thought it would be a fairly popular form of home-made junk food that would separate him from other characters at the time. As a matter of fact, I am eating Chilidogs right now for dinner, since it sounded warm on a foggy Winter night here in the Midwest. Whatever the reason, I think Chilidogs suit Sonic nicely.
Better question:
How does Sonic's gloves avoid chili stains?

I’m surprised this has never happened
The actual best chili dogs I've had is at one of our annual fairs here in the UK.
I believe they were using german sausage recipe made from locally sourced meat and the chili itself was barely a sauce with all the extra veggies they added to it. I think the reason it was so good was the fact that most of the ingredients went through as little processing as possible.
Never had one better than that since. We do have american-style restaurants but no dice compared to the small stallholder
Same, UK stall, German sausage, homemade chilli. About the best damn thing within ten miles.

Fun fact: In Japan Sonic didn’t like Chili dogs originally.
Actually, I hear the Japanese instruction manual for "Sonic Advance 3" lists chili dogs as Sonic's favorite food. I haven't seen confirmation/proof of this.
Apparently, I heard rumors writer Warren Graff accidentally canonized chili dogs, when researching Sonic (as he didn't know much about the series before writing it) he found some sources like the comics say chili dogs were his favorite food. So he canonized it in Black Knight.

I once forced my family to make chilly dogs for new year’s eve since my aunt always made a weird chicken rice that half of us hated. Never forgetting that night because they were so good
One word: *UNDERRATED*
so basically
1) Sonic loves fast food
2) in his world in early cartoon, the chilli dog is very popular, just like how most of cartoons will either showcase hotdogs or usually either burger or pizza as the preferred fast food. In Sonic's case, he was crazy about hot dogs
3) the powder turning into chilli dogs is one of those "advanced science" where you put in a small packet or box in microwave and it magically becomes this delicious meal/item.
Was hoping for super sonic in the movie to summon UNLIMITED CHILLI DOGS or at least a buffet table of it.

Sort of. Looking it up online, I found an introduction for Knuckles listing his favorite food as fruit (especially grapes.) But Sonic and Tails were not mentioned here.
