  • While i have been publishing so far mainly video recordings of Ustad Asad Ali Khan that I recorded myself I will present next a few video recordings of concerts, interviews and talks with Khansahib from other sources.
    As with the other recordings I’m trying to offer the most complete and technical optimal version of it. Besides providing some background information and comments.
    Starting with a recording of Raga Darbari, no doubt one of Khansahibs favorite Ragas. While it’s true that this king of Ragas unfolds his majestic flavor at its best when presented in the old classical Dhrupad Ang (style) there is an unparalleled atmosphere when its presented on the Queen of Indian string Instruments, the Rudra Veena. It might be even not wrong to speak of an inseparable trinity: Darbari - Dhrupad - Rudra Veena.
    While playing in front of other musicians and educated music lovers nothing could possible evoke the mood of old days when this music sounded in the royal courts and palaces as Raga Darbari Kanra played by the masterly hands of Ustad Asad Ali Khan in such gatherings.
    In this recording he is accompanied on Pakhawaj by Pandit Gopal Das Panse one of the finest Pakhawaj maestros in the second half of 20th century who used to play already with Ustad Sadiq Ali Khan before being Khansahibs permanent accompanist for many decades.
    In the absence of clear information I guess the recording was done in the early 1980ties for Doordarshan. Its interesting to see Ustadji performing on an Miraj Veena, which he used to play before settling with an Kanai Lal Veena for the rerst of his life. The performance time is obviously limited trough the broadcast slots to half an hour. However enjoy booth masters doing the best with the given time…

    There is Rudra Veena AND there there is PakshyaVadya Pakhawaj. Music needs rhythm structure. Be grateful to those who gave their entire lives to those who learnt the tradition of drumming. Gopal Das ji

    Isn't it heavy? The rudra Veena?

    • @RudraVeena
      @RudraVeena  Před 3 lety +1

      The traditional Bamboo Veenas could be as light as 2-3 kgs. When the danda is made from teak wood it might be 4-5 kgs. However the newer bigger version as played by Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar weights arround 10 kgs. That's why it is played holding it in the lap, not more on the shoulder.

      @@RudraVeena Hi Carsten:) Do you know if this Miraj Veena was a bamboo Veena or made of teak wood like his later Kanai Lal Veena?? (Wondering for tonal comparison)

    • @RudraVeena
      @RudraVeena  Před 2 lety +2

      Khansahib told me that the Miraj Veenas he played used to be made from Bamboo and usually did not last longer than a few years. In case of this instrument I'm not really sure, but if the dand was made from wood it would be Tun wood not Teak.
