It has been quite a while since the last upload from my recording archive of Ustadjis concerts. Unfortunately the original recording media (DV tapes) got a lot of dropouts with the years and require labor-intensive restoration. However sharing more of Khansahib unique concert recordings is of course worth the trouble.
While I was playing 2019 in the St. Peters Church Vienna accompanied by Pt. Mohan Shyam Sharma memories of our European tour exactly twenty years before came up. It was the first time I could bring Ustad Asad Ali Khan to Europe and accompany him on the tour. While managing the concerts and driving us around, recording of concerts whenever and wherever possible become an important task too.
This concert in Vienna on 9th November 1999 was arranged by Radha Anjali and the Austrian-Indian Society. Kahnsahib played Raga Behag in the first half, while he was enchanting the audience with Raga Desh and a short Vasant in the second.
Like in the concerts before Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma is giving great accompaniment on the Pakhawaj and Zaki Haider on the Tanpura.

It's my dream to play the Rudra Veena! This man is beyond a true Master! I would have loved to have met him, heard him and best of all studied with him!!

This recital would have been surely an incomplete one without our Mohan ji joining in with the Pakhawaj.
This has been achieved in one lifetime, it itself is intriguing , of which I could only understand 1% think about the depths
Many years ago I heard him for the first time in anempty hall playing Bihag. Ive never forgotten that experience. I was with Subrata Roychowdhry and our feeling was similar.
Unfortunately Dhrupad maestros like Khansahib though having their pockets full of most refined musical gems got hardly recognition by a broader audience in India. At times the interest they received in the West while touring there was bigger then the appreciation at home. Dhrupad and the Veena are no doubt experienced best in small circles, however for the musicians recognition is of course a sort of life elixir. But than they still have to pour out their heart, whether in front of 500, 50 or 5 listeners.
Very appreciative of the work it takes to upload these concerts. I am new to the sound of the radra veena but not to the sound on Indian Classical in general, and I have to say, this hits a little different- deliberate, meditative, patient, insanely virtuosic. I've never heard anything like it. Transfixing.

Many thanks to you Carsten ji for this video. Ustad ji was the Maestro with finest sense of presenting ragas. The tonal quality of his playing is so smooth that always shows with what extraordinary nuances he used to play. He is the best BEENKAR to me amongst all 4 - 5 most distinguished Maestros I have heard so far. His each and every piece of playing is simply outstanding ! All are priceless gems.

However I hope you are not one of the cases who believe with all the recordings of the Masters available, those could replace a real life Guru. Enjoy and make best use of this recordings, but please study music with a Guru that can respond and correct your attempts...
@@RudraVeena Yes sir. by study essentials I meant that I listen to these while studying, and it has a different impact on me. I am learning classical music under the guidance of my guru from last 7 years. I truly understand the crucial role that a guru plays in not just grooming our musical skill, but also our complete personality.
Hi Cartsen. Im a massive fan of Ali Assad Khans style. He was one of a kind. Just wondering if you know what he was wearing on the fingers of the left hand. It looks like sticky tape. Just wondering if he had something to aid him in the sliding of the fingers down the frets as opposed to oil. keep up the great work yourself!
It's simple cello tape that Khansaab is using here on the left hand fingers to cover the finger tips. Its rather an exception, after a longer playing break.
Usually he would play with oil and bare finger tips.
However, for those interested. If you want to practice when the fingertips are paining in spite of callus, there are covers available usually used by guitar or bass players that can be used for the Veena too.
I have a question Carsten ji, sorry if it is ignorant....I notice a difference in the holding style of Ustad Ji, with one of the round resonators on his shoulder, while you seem to mostly play it slightly parallel to the ground, excuse me if I am wrong. Why is that so?
A many times ask and answered question Gayatri. Basically the instrument Ustadji played was a traditional Rudra Veena that used to have an weight of 3-5kg. They instrument I play today is following the approach Ust. Z.M. Dagar took with a enlarged version of the Veena that has different sound quality. However beside the bigger size it also results in a weight of 10kg. Thats the main reason to shift the holding position from the shoulder to the lap.

Well, every artist tries to realise his own vision and voice with his music. As for instance Khansahib's playing of the Bin also sounded quite different from that of his Guru and Father Ustad Sadiq Ali Khan. However the refined expression and techniques of Ustadji's Baj are definitely something to aim at for every Binkar.
Indian tape? BASF or whatever, the mike as far as possible from the bass drum!
