Harley Oil Cooler Fan Assist installation on 2020 Road King Special

  • Video of how I installed the Harley Oil Cooler Fan Assist on to the Road King Special. The process was easy with a couple of tricky areas. For one, removing the 2 torx screws required some heat to loosen the lock tight. Another tricky area is removing the hose clamps without damaging the hose itself. I did not use the included oil hose as the bike is new. I have a set of crimp type clamps and decided to use those instead of the included clamps. There is nothing wrong with the supplied worm gear type hose clamp.
    I have yet to bring the bike into the 1000 mile service. When I do, I will have the service department activate both the Cool Flow fan and this Oil Cooler w/fan assist.
    NOTE: To test the oil cooler fan operation once dealer have activate it, simply switch ignition to on, DO NOT start engine, and twist to full throttle and hold. The oil cooler fan will turn on. Switch ignition off to turn off after test.
    I have the Dynojet Vision and so far, without any fan, the engine temperature, reported by the ECU runs between 270 F to 300 F degrees when the ambient temp was around 68 F degrees. The measurements was monitored 30 minutes into the ride. In town with many stop lights the temp will stay around 300 F degrees.

    Thanks for the video, well crafted and useful project. If you have a heat gun with a focused tip you can use that for heating up the lock-tight nuts. My RK has 20K on it so I did replace the hoses. It is doable, without removing the exhaust (instructions say to).

    Not sure if you've heard of the THUNDERMAX® OIL COOLER FAN kit but I was about to order this same HD oil fan cooler kit until I discovered this Thundermax...it is very easy install in-place "plug & play" without all the hassle of all oil hose line removal & spills, check out it out next time--thanks for sharing.

    Could you recommend a fan assisted oil cooler for 2016 Harley Breakout? I live in really hot climate and as a result i had to replace my engine twice now.

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  Před 3 lety

      I would talk to the Parts Department at Harley. They are really good people and also ride. They should be able to recommend a good oil cooler and fan for your bike. Problem with OilCoolers are the fact that the oil does not transfer heat very well so the effect is minimal. There are other induction type cooling fans from after market manufacturers that can be mounted on the engine to help cool it down. I don't remember the company. If I remember, I'll reply again.

    Did you notice any difference between the stock and fan assist oil cooler?
    I had mine installed upon delivery of my 2018 RKS, so never got to compare before and after.

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  Před 4 lety

      I did some tests prior to installing and after. I notice in City driving, the engine took a longer time to climb with both Oil cooler fan and Cool Flow Fan. Without the fans, the engine temps easily exceeds 300 degrees just waiting for 1 light.

    Wondering what you will do w. The stock oil cooler. Maybe for sale? Bike looks like new. I will.also subscribe did the new set up help or make a difference? I have a 15 Fat Bob rgs or rks. Are too much $ so I am sticking w. What I have . I was thinking about love jugs as well . W. The fp3 I got readings of about 290deg. Also wondering if synthetic would help

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  Před 4 lety

      Harley replace my oil after break-in with synthetic and yeah, I am about 290 to 300 on the highway doing 70mph in 85 to 90 degree's temp. When I get off the exit, I do notice the fan helping to maintain ~300 degrees as I travers in stop and go in traffic. Without the fan, it would quickly get up to almost 325 at just 1 stop light. The love jugs should really help because the cooling fins on the cylinder are very efficient so adding any type of fan to it will definitely cool down the cylinders. However, I just don't really like the looks of those fans.

    Giant question for you. does that fan assisted oil cooler turn on ok after dynojet powervision tune is installed??? Or do you have to modify the tune before installing it to make sure the fan still operates ok??? I have the Fan right now, and wanted to ask you before I install or tune my powervision on the bike, thanks!!!!

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  Před rokem +1

      I have the powervision and it does not seem to interfere with the oil cooler fan so far. Let me know if you do start to see effects on the fan as you try different maps or settings. At the moment, my fan operates the same as without the powervision. By the way, I activated the fan at the dealer then added the powervision.

      @@rtabcum Thanks for the very detailed answer! I have the exact same setup as you, I went to the Harley dealership to activate my oil cooler fan, and it works great also. Can you let me know if you had to specify to Dynojet that you had the oil cooler fan, before they custom made a tune for you. I was told that they need to know about the fan, before making a custom made tune. Is that what you had to do?? I went through fuelmoto, did you?? or dynojet?

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  Před 2 lety

      Ah, its been a while but I think it was either 5mm hex or 6mm hex. Turns out I did not really need to plug the oil line as only a small amount flowed out of them.

    What temp does the oil need to be at to activate the fan?

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  Před 3 lety +1

      The oil cooler fan comes on regardless of temp after a few minutes. Someone left a comment about test activating the fan manually by twisting the throttle to full open and turning the ignition (do not start the engine) on and hold it open until the oil cooler fan will activate. I did this and it works.

    Cooler vs cooler with fan. For what? Without fan its overheated?

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  Před 2 lety +1

      I honestly feel the fan does help but not as much as one would think. It does seem to "slow" down the heat build up when sitting still at the stop light. As overheating goes, i have not ran into that with or without the fan.
