Why Americans Don’t Eat Enough Vegetables

  • In 2011 the USDA counted two tablespoons of tomato paste as a serving of vegetables, why don’t Americans eat their veggies?
    Read More:
    The U.S. Doesn't Have Enough Of The Vegetables We're Supposed To Eat
    www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2...
    “If you are looking for proof that Americans' vegetable habits lean towards french fries and ketchup, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has it: Nearly 50 percent of vegetables and legumes available in the U.S. in 2013 were either tomatoes or potatoes.”
    Why don’t taxpayers subsidize the foods that are better for us?
    www.washingtonpost.com/lifest...
    “Read the farm bill, and a big problem jumps right out at you: Taxpayers heavily subsidize corn and soy, two crops that facilitate the meat and processed food we’re supposed to eat less of, and do almost nothing for the fruits and vegetables we’re supposed to eat more of.”

      +Taseen Khan I still hate brussels sprouts. Though I've never tried them raw...
      Both have strong flavors though, so people with sensitive taste buds often don't enjoy them unless it happens to be a type of flavor they REALLY enjoy. It's why children often don't like them, since they have a full mouth of taste buds, where adults have many dead/inactive tastebuds from use over time.

    Point being...if American would eat more fresh vegetables, the demand will go up, supply will go down. Resulting into a higher price for farmers which will then switch to growing foods agian.

    • @KCDCish
      @KCDCish Před 8 lety +3

      +Stormfox The point is vegetables cost more than processed foods and processed foods can be kept longer so they are bought more readily. My family owns a farm in America and I've seen the change from growing squash and zucchini to completely not growing any of it and switching to cotton and corn etc. We use to do tobacco but it is too risky for that anymore due to weather. While your statement is correct, it just isn't likely to happen unless we get a big green movement or something.

All this processed garbage kids live off of now was only bought as a treat once in a while. It's especially upsetting to see how downhill the school lunches have gotten. Coming from experience in agriculture, this is a huge problem. The most nutritionally dense food are typically low yield and low profit compared to say commercial grains. Another HUGE issue is distribution; the simple fact is that processed foods are by-far easier to ship and store than fresh produce. A fresh tomato can only stay fresh for so long, while a can of tomato paste can be good for years. And if you don't live where a certain product is grown (or its winter!) it will have to be shipped in from somewhere they do grow, so that takes a lot of time out of the time you can use and sell it. In general, access to these kinds of good food is one of the main hindrances to total population health.
    Also, why are you referring to tomatoes as a vegetable? It's a fruit. Just cause you can't put in fruit salad does make it a vegetable.

    Growing up, I wasn't aloud to be picky. If there was something for dinner that I didn't like I got less of it, but I wasn't aloud to leave the table until I was finished with the food I didn't like. Most of the food I hated then is food that I enjoy eating now (like brussel sprouts, grits, tortellini, etc.). We never had excess amounts of soda in the house, I was told to drink juice and water before I was aloud to drink any soda. We had fruit and/or vegetables with nearly every meal. I don't understand how people have a problem with this.

    I don't think I've met a vegetable yet that I've actively disliked... I'm not crazy about some (lookin' at you, eggplant), but I'd still eat them. Not sure if I can name a favorite one. I do love green beans, cherry tomatoes, raw carrots, chickpeas, green peas, weird salads/lettuce types, and ginger and garlic as a base in dishes. AND MUSHROOMS (although I guess those don't technically count). But really, any kind of vegetable, either raw or cooked right, is delicious to me. I'm guilty of being lazy about varying my daily intake, though. :/

  • @nateslovebug
    @nateslovebug Před 8 lety

    Asparagus ranks high for me, especially this time of year. Tomatoes, so much, between my husband and I we go though at least a half a dozen tomatoes a week. Onions and peppers can veggie-ise a lot of Mexican dishes. Veggies need to be more available at schools and in poor parts of cities, as Suburbs and even poor rural communities have some access to vegetables.
