Halo 4 did exactly what the creators wanted: began exploring Chief’s humanity. Up until this scene, it didn’t even occur to me it was something I would want to see.
A human that is almost a machine and a machine that's almost human.
So good!
This encapsulates Master Chief's tragedy. He is humanity's next step as a species, yet he will never know how it'll be like to be part of it as it were.

Mate, I'm so glad I'm not the only one, the story was top notch, my favourite one narrowly beating out ODST and Reach
@@ethanbohnen6183 While I agree it is a good story, I don't agree at it's better than reach and odst, but I respect ur opinion. I do thinks it's the better campaign that 343 has made from the 2 games they created but bungie I think did it better with the whole atmosphere of the halo vibe and even change the vibe based on mission or game, like we see from games like halo CE, 2 and 3 where u feel like a badass to games like reach and odst where u feel alone and the world is falling apart around u. I hope u get what I mean
@@thethreemusketeers6045 oh yeah, I 100% agree, I still think ODST and Reach are better, but 4 cracks the top 3 easily, it elaborates more on Cortana and Chiefs relationship, shows that Chief does have the capacity to feel love in bold defiance of Halseys intentions, even to see him refuse a superior officers orders, the little things like that made it super enjoyable for me, still not as good as Reach though
Poor Chief, lost the only family he ever had in his whole life

God the Halo 4 ending was beautiful and had a unique concept for a story and executed it well its a shame they got so much flack for the story
No matter what people say I still think 343 has taken good care of this franchise, it may be different from what bungie did for halo 3. But halo 4s story was very personal, emotional and touching. Very beautiful

And somehow doesn't break his established character at all. This wasn't something he was prepared for, or even expected to happen, so of course he wouldn't be ok afterward. Everything he's stifled has finally come out

Halo 4 honestly my favorite halo in gameplay & story and chiefs look and the fact he can be emotional thru a dam helmet is impressive
This scene man, then I think back to all of that shit in halo 1, 2 and 3, chief went through hell, the guy is a psychological catastrophe.
and what happened before halo ce
Lasky should’ve said “That’s what Chyler would have said”, or “Chyler/an old friend would agree with you”, when Chief says “Our duty as soldiers is to protect humanity. Whatever the cost”. That would have yeeted the hearts of more people. Hopefully Halo: Infinite will see more Chief - Lasky time. I like how they’ve actually built up another character. They tried doing that with Locke and Buck and the others in Halo 5 but it didn’t exactly mash well. Lasky and Chief do fit together nicely though.
Thing is that if you didn't want FuD you'd be like: "who tf is Chyler?"
@Nainorotodox Casuals: “Aw, that’s nice. They gave Lasky some extra depth. It’d be nice if we got some extra info later on about who this Chyler was and what they meant to him.”
True Fans: _“HNNGH!!_ My heart! 😵”
It adds even more depth to Tom Lasky’s character when you realize Chief saved his life and is trying to return the favor. He may be a higher rank but Lasky has more respect for Chief then most, especially the captain during Halo 4! Also why Chief tells Lasky what to prepare for instead of the captain, cause Chief knows he’ll listen. And I can’t wait for any future ops with them working together!
The hells a chyler
As much as I agree that Halo 5 was a shitshow and made this ending be meaningless, it does follow suite on one continuation: Master Chief realizes he isn't just an asset, but human.
His whole quest in Halo 5 is to find Cortana, no matter the cost.
This isn't a hardware or a machine at work here, but a very human emotion and action. Master Chief is ready to be branded a traitor to humanity to attempt a rescue on one of the only family he's ever known.
On this note, again yeah Halo 5 was terrible, but the fact they started on Chief's story arc to understand what it is to be human is an idea I hope they don't scrap.
0:22
when master chief forgot how to read so he asks cortana for help
Damn, these budget cuts on the spartan program are getting out of hand.
I still love halo 4 well the campaign it was beautiful not the best but good!
I agree..
and then we got Halo 5.
I'm just realizing this. Lasky spoke the Chief like he didn't know him at the academy when the Chief saved Lasky's life. I don't get it. Also, fun fact. John 117 was only 15 when the academy was attacked by the Covenant.
lasky said "feels kinda odd for you to call me sir" cause Chief saved him when he was still training
Dead thread, but thought i would put my two points in. The ending of halo 4 was most likely already scripted and completed by the time Forward Unto Dawn came out, giving the first episdoe was october 2012 and the game was november 2012. While they clearly did plan to have Lasky and Chief know each other at some point, some basic information needed to be given for the sake of the player possible not knowing the relationship between the two. It is one of those cases like in a movie where seemingly unnecessary exposition is given to give the audience context if they have not read the book. Of course Chief knows about the academy, the player may not.
HawkeyeNation19 I think Lasky is actually one year older than Chief!
Yeah, but Chief definitely isn't 15 anymore. And Lasky is definitely older.
@@jonathancrane952 Lasky doesn't know that though.
I hope she doesn't come back it would make the story of loss pointless
+JEBEDIAH8D well your pray are not heard my friend , cortana just almost blew the whole entire universe in halo 5
If you didn't play 5 or played it and don't like that she came back lemme put your worries to rest. It isn't actually Cortana who came back. It's half Didact half Cortana
Too late mate
Joseph Garcia nah she has the logic plague look it up its mad and literally the only reason why it all ended up like this. Halo expperia on CZcams
I would have been fine if they brought Cortana back, but the way it was done was absolutely terrible.
She should have either A) not appeared in Halo 5 or B) Only appeared at the very end when you complete the campaign on Legendary. This would have built suspense and shocked everyone because this character you thought was dead was actually the mastermind behind everything and you don't know until either the next game or the very end of Halo 5.
Halo 5 was a complete fuck up and IMO it should be retconned entirely and the original Hunt the Truth story should be rebuilt and give us that as canon, not what we got.
My favourite ending because it feels like master chief gets the respect he deserves

You can tell Master Chief was affected by Lasky’s words.
“You say that, like soldiers and humanity are two different things. Soldiers aren’t machines. We’re just people.”
Master Chief was touched by these words, which was obvious by how he looked at Lasky. Chief never felt like how he felt when he lost Cortana, he felt sad, something he hasn’t felt before. It made him remember that he isn’t just a killing machine, but just a human.
Thanks for watching & commenting!
I really liked the more human approach to Chief because when I was little I thought of the chief to be a machine designed to kill, Halo 4 showed that in the end, they’re just people like everyone else.

Dem Feelz. :'(
The underlying theme of Halo is one of the best in gaming imo. Its Chief's struggle with understanding whether he's man or machine. Ironically enough Cortana always represented humanity while Chief represents the machine.
The underlying question posed in the Halo series has always been, "what makes us human?" I couldn't imagine a character that represents the dichotomy between man and machine better than John.
Cortana was one of the few that frequently referred to him as John, she was his link to humanity. People shit on Halo 4's story but I think they nailed it. Chief didn't only lose his best friend but his link to his humanity.
this music is amazing, they didnt want to take that theme, becuase that was for the first halo trilogy, this is a new trilogy, thus new theme
John is a good example of what to do when a girl breaks up with you. Stay cool.
Halo 4 might have not been the best but you could tell they tried and for what it was it was a satisfying story and heartbreaking ending. To bad halo 5 ruined this great ending

At the beginning of the missing you put her in the terminal so she can distract the didact. She also had the control of the hardlight bridge. And right before the detontation she built a protective shield with the hardlight stuff around the master chief...
And with the hardlight stuff she was able to build a physical entity! Thats why she said "i've waited so long to do that"

Crazy how chief calls lasky sir now. Knowing chief saved him in FUD. Were they the same age?
Canonically, Laskey is a year older than chief. Laskey born August 2510, Chief born March 2511. In the events of this game, Laskey is 46, Chief is 47
5:45 One thing I love about this scene that ties into Forward Unto Dawn is that we saw Cheif be half human and half Machine in the movie. He'd only been conditioned for 9 years at that point. We see Cheif as Robotic most of the time and it's probably because that's how he sees himself. At 6:28 we get Cheif questioning what he really is. He keeps his helmet on more than anyone on and off screen because he takes the mission the most seriously. He has been in Full Machine Mode for 30 Years. He rarely hears his own name. He becomes more Human in every game.
Speaking about his humanity I think you are referring to the moment in the movie FUD when Chief refused to leave Lasky and his teammates behind, isn't it?
