The Command and Conqer game series was a vital part of the birth and evolution of the RTS genre and sold millions of copies. Westwood's franchise competed for supremacy with the newly formed Blizzard Entertainment for supremacy of the newly forming RTS genre and the adoration of gamers everywhere. Come with me as I go over 20 years of research into the history of command and conquer fraught with buyouts form EA games and splintering teams so we can answer the question WHO KILLED COMMAND AND CONQUER? Also, I can't even tag all the games that are in this video because CZcams is saying that's too many tags. FINE THEN HOPEFULLY CLOSED CAPTIONS WILL PICK THEM ALL UP BUT I WILL NOT COMPROMISE HOW EXTENSIVE MY VIDEOS ARE FOR YOUR SEARCH ALGORITHMS

Charlatan Wonder shows how much interest there is still left in C&C even after the disastrous 4 and mobile game.. high hopes for at least the remakes to be good!
Red Alert 2 was my favorite out of the series.
I beat all stages in all toughnesses in Tiberium Wars. You must be a weakling, pussy :-) Great game.
your opinions and story were spot on, credit due, where credits earnt.. FK EA they ruined C&C
You're doing the Lord's work, my dude. Glad you're getting the recognition.

Well uhh... That kinda explains that.
Yeah, he's talking out of his ass.
Ezreal 'TrueWOPR' Clownguard zero hour make Every thing better
That is the best game ;)
Ehh, haven't played Zero Hour, but still lost it when he claimed Warcraft 3 is better than Generals. Like what? Blizzard does terrible RTS gameplaywise. Did that torture 2x tho since the story was still great back than. But Blizzard does not make good RTS, heck, they don't make RTS, they make RTT. Twitchy micromanaging tactical shit, not true strategy. Couldn't handle StarCraft over 5 story missions and just left... despite the common praise I absolutely despise that game.
Granted, it had an impact and sure has it's merits, that is not a strategy game. That's a. RTT I don't play RTT the same I don't play Moba or Battle Royale. For those who do, more power to them. But SC should have been a branching evolution off RTS, instead too many thought it as an etalon to follow, and that is the most despicable thing that ever happened to RTS games as a whole
C&C mainline games up to Kane's Wrath, Total Annihilation & SupCom, the 2D Stronghold games, those are good strategy games.
@@janosd4nuke Regardless of my preferences I will agree that WC3 was far more popular.

Also Charlatan: *never even played Zero Hour and says that it sucks*
I was waiting for him to say, "Just joking, Zero Hour was arguably the best entry in the entire series".
Generals is simply the best C&C in the series, and the community is super active with all of these mods
generals aged terribly. even zero hour wasn't great on release compared to what it was supposed to be (cut content galore). Mods were definitely Generals/ZH's saving grace though

"Kane's Wrath introduces two new subfactions for each faction that play a bit different, and have different units.
Which is really nice way of adding new factions without making it something that the player has to entirely relearn"
If you liked that idea, perhaps you should go back and try Zero Hour; the C&C game that did that first.
Actually Red Alert did that first, albeit extremely limited, the country's acted as sub-factions within the Soviets and Allies. Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey for the Soviets, and Germany, England, Greece, Spain, and France for the Allies.

Dolphin units were there, but they were treated as special. RE3 basically treated every unit as a joke.

I was following the developers live for several years during and after Tiberium Wars, and I have noticed one additional factor: they wanted to make the gameplay more friendly to sports events. What the developers claimed was that macro was hard to get spectators excited about. Instead, spectators were more interested in moment-to-moment maneuvers and displays of micro management. So, every subsequent game after Tiberium Wars made macro simpler and micro more important.
It wasn't a crazy idea in itself, but they should have given up when it was obvious that it wasn't making things better.
As an avid RTS player who does a lot of competitive 1v1 especially in C&C3 I believe you are totally right.
Command and Conquer Generals is a game that is played a lot even in 2018.

I have 2 different versions of the game on DVD (the standard one and the expanded edition). Up until about 2 years ago the game installed and ran fine. Now when I install it the game either refuses to even start or it won't load a save game (and sometimes it doesn't even show them). I heard this is caused by an update in Windows 7 that blocks certain files in games from around 2005 because of a security exploit?

Gonna stop you right there: YES. No doubt about it.
The focus on the mobile asian market. The insertion of micro transactions. The rediculous deadlines and horific work conditions.
THAT is what killed CnC.
Tib Wars 3 can match SC2. I am not kidding. The quality of the original Tib3 vs WoL SC2 is comparable. The talanted team that made Tib Wars 3 should have gotten an AWARD for the conditions they pulled that off in. Give them 3-4 years, Create a New Tiberium wars (Mabye rename it Tiberium Conflict or something to avoid association with the dumpsterfire that is tib wars 4) and you have a game of the year worthy title.
But we can't have that now can we? Because you can not shove microtransactions into a well done game like Tib Wars 3. So EA will never do it.
Hate to be that guy but mobile games are gonna contribute to that. People spend hundreds on World of Tanks so why would a developer make a AAA title at this point?
Damn dude, Generals and zero hour were the high point of C&C for me.
''Behold, the bringer of light.'' :D
red alert 2 and c&c 3 were the best games easily
Red Alert 2? Bah. :P It was the worst of the good six. RA 1 was much better.
But yeah, Generals / ZH was good enough that people are *still* making mods for them and there's a large player base.
Generals was fun, particularly the gameplay, the story is simplistic and practically non-existant particularly if you compare it to the themes covered in the original Command and conquer though. I enjoyed Generals more when I read it as a parody of the war on terror, an exaggerated take on things.

We used to shit our pants at how pretty Generals looked back in 2003. I guess it's subjective whether you like it or not, but I was pretty surprised that you disliked it so much. Most people seem to enjoy it, and oddly for me some say it's the best C&C title. I say that's odd since Generals is extremely different from the traditional C&C formula, but in a good way IMO. Back at the time this game and Zero Hour just felt fresh.
TheIzroda i once conceived a mod for this game
I am not a fan of the UI. Which is the game UI scheme as Starcraft 2. I like the UI of later games. Much more practical and user-friendly.
TheIzroda also you can train hundreds of units at a time and still play it. There is even an archivement for it as far as I can remember. Have 50 tanks in the game at the same time or something.
And here you hit the nail right on the head.
Generals isn't a C&C title. It just got the franchise tacked on for some easy publicity.
Even worse? Zero Hour was originally part of the core game but was stripped as EA's signature move. To be sold after the fact as an "expansion". Which really is just a clever way for them to raise the price of the complete game from $60 to $100 when you stop to think about it... Strip out 30% and push for an early release, sell the stripped parts after the fact as "expansion" or these days as DLC.
Course, if you think that's bad business? They're now selling DLC for their DLC with The Sims.
Tucher97 RA 3 was too pretty. As in it was unrealistic pretty, like every tank was just in the washer. Combined with the general silliness (tanks that bounce like they are made out of rubber) and you got a very wired and unrealistic feel.
Same mistake that Dawn of War 3 did in that regard.
*_As someone who used to work for Westwood, I'd say EA..._*
As a kid I wanted to visit the studio so bad. But then as a teen I learned they closed it and all I wanted to do was kill some EA execs.

I was going to comment about how I disagree about Generals and especially Zero Hour, but I see everyone and their mom already has. Reason why so many, myself included, love those games is how much variety and freedom you have. Going to CnC3 after zero hour felt so incredibly restrictive and dull because of how used I was to how creative I could get with Generals ZH. You had quite a few different units and factions, each unit could be customized quite a bit and being able to fill up vehicles with different infantery and allowing to those passengers to shoot added a whole lot of strategy. In short, anyone condeming generals and ZH because it is not enough like CnC is missing out.

39:10 HAPPY ENDING???
They ruined one of my top 5 favorite franchises. They ruined the ending of the Tiberium universe.
Only way to get a happy ending is to pretend C&C 4 never happened and make a true conclusion to the Tiberium universe.
I personally don't see 4 as cannon, though it may be in EA's eyes. Im just waiting for someone with respect to acquire the series and do something good with it (probably never happen xD).
You know, if you change some of the mechanics and retool the storyline to the Scrin invading things like mobile bases would actually be interesting. But no, they completely ignore the obvious set up for an amazing conclusion.
the idea of mobile structures doesnt diminish anything infact i say it adds an addional lair maybe a mobile barracks but most people would think that would break the game you can spam your most toughest units but i would say how did halo wars handle its mobile barracks which only gave you basic units and no upgrades simply give us our basic infantry and rocket infantry
now in terms of a mobile base that be good for story line where you are required to be on the move because of growing danger maybe as a world story piece you can have a group of GDI and nod in the red zone learning about local flora and fauna however your base is a crawler and its very vuranable so you can add increase threats and maybe scrin strike forces where you have to play a major game of nomad playstyle all teh while not getting discovered, sorry for dumping this
Not remember in Tiberium Sun there was the Fist of Nod or something and it was a mobile barracks, pretty cool.
In my opinion, the only canon 4th Tiberium War is C&C Tiberium. Like William Gibson's 1987 Alien 3 script, it's the only logical continuation to the previous installment, even if it was never put into full production.
Oh, and for fans that didn't know, Tiberium was a squad-based FPS/RTS hybrid game that takes place decades after C&C 3. The main plot revolved around the second Scrin invasion of Earth.
I was wondering what was with the dislikes, then i got to the C&C generals part...

Yeah. Generals ZH is the game I still play today!
C&C Generals was a dumpster fire...it was a travesty that came out when people wanted the main series to get a new game. The graphics were poor...the economy was laughable at times. There were some nice features that made it into the main series but I was in the Beta and we had been told it needed longer then all of a sudden it was going to launch in the next 2 months.
Skeeter McGhee I totally would agree with you if I was old enough then to understand the story and lore. But the reason I got so attached to generals and ZH was because it, out of all the 18 other games in the same pack (good god it was 'fun' every time I wanted to install it, having to write every cd registry code), it was ZH that I found most appealing to me, and graphics felt better. But I started experiencing this amazing game serie maybe one or two year before C&C 4 (which simply was shit, yes. Didnt even install).

Sadly they killed it, with C&C 4...
CURSE YOU EA You dream destroying fuckers.
I liked Generals more than C&C3.
Honestly a lot of people do, even the modding community is still alive to this very day Generals is a superior game in every aspect except for graphics even tho 3 and KW were great games themselves Generals just blows both of em out the water
I played every one. Then red alert 3 I lasted 5 minutes. Still not played it.
Red alert 2 my favorite game ever, one of the first big online multiplayer games, it was amazing
Yeah baby !
Loved Generals, have No issue with the accents, it is what it is.
You do realize how popular Generals is, in the C&C series?
Don't you know - acknowledging that people of different linguistic backgrounds = racist. -_-
I need some new shoes!
John Owens no don't burst his bubble he has a hard enough life with that overbite of his.
John Owens (upgrade resources collecting) "thank you for the new shoes" .
Friends from China say they were dying to play Generals when it was released cuz it was banned in China.
I played CAC generals and thats what brought me into loving strategy games after that it was Zero hour and then Command and Conquer 3 tiberium wars and then kains wrath what killed it for me was the Last installment the game that should not be mentioned
Dark Wander same lol. But for me it's RA2, Generals series, RA1, then Tiberium series.
Indeed, Generals was great to play, i also loved it. My first C&C was Red Alert and it was my 2nd original game purchased in 90's since the games then did cost 150PLN here and typical monthly paycheck was around 1200-1500pln so it was quite expensive, but the game was great. Too bad my SiS6202 graphics card had only 512KB of ram and didn't have z-mapping included then so i wasn't able to run RA in windows 95 so i've been restricted to 320x240 resolution instead of 640x480 that RA95.exe run with.
I've not been a fan of Tiberian Sun, RA2 was a nice game for me but not a game-changer, but Generals was very playyable and fun, so i've played it almost as long as Red Alert...
So the talk about Generals being shit is a bulshit.
I played Generals competitively for years + mods. Awesome times. I've been playing cnc since the first one.
That last game was terrible on purpose. Think about it.
I found Zero Hour's Generals Challenge to be excellent. Hard to beat, but possible. On the last level (Dragon general) you almost have to be playing as the stealth general and you may have to abandon the starting base . You also have to watch your resources pretty closely.
"scientist dudes" THAT'S EINSTEIN!!
Looking for this comment.
Yeah, let's listen to a history lesson from this guy. Shit video.
Just for the fans: C&C Generals & (especially) Zero Hour are HUGELY popular. Although graphics are an issue, playability and fun-to-play is truly the main aspect considered by most games. Thanks for the share.
i prefered red alert and comand and conquer more then warcraft and starcraft.
Tiberian Sun was actually the best entry in the entire series imho. Also (to my knowledge) the most modded and therefore beloved even after all those years up until today. It's incredible what you can do with just TEXT editor tweaks to a Rules.ini
Generals compared to Red Alert 2 was just subpar, not in mechanics but in general scale and objective awesomeness, Red Alert 2 is imo better than Tiberian Sun from a mechanical standpoint. But damn if I don't find TS to be way more iconic and memorable, and all around more interesting to play lol.
Well , you have to look at c&c , red alert and generals as 3 different games .
They each have their own history and function seperate with their own universe.
I loved generals, zero hour , red alert 2 and c&c original .
Tiberian Sun is definitely my favorite followed by RA2. I still mod and play it.
I also really loved Tiberian Sun, it was my top game for years. Though I agree with Charleton: C&C3 is just an improvement across the board. Infantry are actually useful. Stealth is properly fleshed out. There's a third race and more mechanics.
Ra2yr has 100 mods or so
In CC3, Kane had been alive more than 100 years. He was in Red Alert too, as the man behind Stalin.
Kane is Cain from the Old Testament. So hes more like thousands of years old.
Generals was great. I don't know what you're on about!
Making that vomiting noise while talking about Generals... Bullshit. Generals was awesome.
Justin Time It’s called an opinion dipshit
@@stahl1624 Don't you realize that Justin wad also just saying his opinion?😅
@@mitasrb You must be the smartest person alive my friend, how are you not in Harvard.
@@stahl1624 Well seeing as how he vanquished you without effort, I may ask the same question.
Well a new dumpster fire has just been announced... pissing on that C&C grave once more.
My favorite was CoC generals specifically zero hour
Same here. I loved this game and still do. I play it a good bit.
yeah he's off by a country mile. Generals was the best in the series in my book. best balanced rts I have ever played, and no super weapon cap ftw
Holy shit right
I wish you had mentioned Dune 2000. Because that was definitely a gem :)
Oh man, Red Alert 1-2 were my jam back in the day. I still listen to their OSTs to this day when I'm driving! Also that ending was great for a laugh. XD
I hate EA
Who doesn't besides the mindless sheep?
behhhhhhh (- Nah me no sheep, i am also done with EA)
You and me both!
you hate generals,zh,cnc 3 ,kane wrath,red alert 3
wow
Im not fuc*Censored* done with EA i love red alert 3 and command and conquer generals and zero hour
u are opening old wounds...
"I can't see why people would like Generals, but I didn't play Zero Hour"
You have absolutely zero right to be saying anything about Command and Conquer if you haven't played the best entry in the entire series.
Zero Hour was peak C&C. Any gamer knows this. The video author only talked about single player - what about the incredible multiplayer? I still play it to this day 20+ years later! A true masterpiece.
Ayy, thanks for the shoutout man! Kane's Wrath is a great game and I would strongly recommend anyone out there looking for an active online C&C community to check it out.
Bro you haven't posted a video in two months, we miss you!
people still play kanes wraith ???
What needs to happen in order for you to start posting shoutcasts of Tib Wars and Kane's Wrath matches again?
Kane's Wrath killed the competetive scene entirely and pretty much overnight.
I await patiently for more videos my man.
Renegade was a real through-the-looking-glass experience. They're less rare now, but there's still no Starcraft: Ghost or X-Wing simulator. By now they could probably flesh out multiple genres within a single game pretty decently, if they thought a huge WoW-scale success is worth the risk.
One of the things that got cut to save time somewhere in this monster of a video is how renegade won by default against blizzard and microprose thanks to both XCOM alliance and Starcraft Ghost getting cancelled.
Back then it could have been real big like Half-Life, not so sure now.
I always felt Renegade was the precursor to Planetside.
renegade has the best multiplayer, which is WAY better than its single player
Star Wars is a bad example because Star Wars: X-wing was out in 1993, two years before C&C. But furthermore with Star Wars we have a movie lore universe founded in 1977 which is fleshed out to many computer games which cover all the major genres. So it's a completely different story. Any studio who builds a RTS Star Wars game will not have the rights for a Star Wars shooter or space flight simulator by default to flesh it out.
Tiberium Sun was epic, the music is timeless and the cinematic story really drew you in
Wonna know why C&C:generals was huge? Running tanks destroying trees while running and hitting enemies at the same time... humvies filled with RPG launchers snipers and what not running like crazy and creating havoc.. and everything felt so SPEC OPS like black hawk down or something :P
@Akin Khoo
Oh, did your humvee get smacked by a nuke cannon shell?
That is to be expected
I loved the video up until "dumpster fire"
Terran Spears lol me too. Generals was there best in my opinion.
... I bought Tiberian Twilight. Biggest gaming shame.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Well, at least the music was good. Not at all Command and Conquery, but good.
I got to like level 15 GDI support in multiplayer. turns out having a tank that buffs everything around it is pretty good.
Command & Conquer : Unit ready!
Command & Conquer 4 : Unit lost!
I was a hardcore CnC fan, but never bought CnC4 when I saw what they did to it. After a friend won an extra copy, he gave it to me - it's still in it's plastic wrapping
Generals is my second favorite C&C game with the first being RA2. The only problem I have with Generals is the horrible close camera. Wish all games would do what they did with RUSE and allow you to zoom all the way out and see the whole map on one screen.
Kane's Wrath is my favorite title, even though I think Red Alert 2 is the peak of the series, overall. Never really played Generals, so I can't agree or disagree with you on that part. Tiberium Twiligt was the last C&C game I've played (49 minutes on Steam), and I didn't even know about the game after that. I think Red Alert 3 deserves more credit for the new gameplay styles.
But thanks for the walkthrough, I was nice going down memory lane :)
I refused to buy C&C4, for me the series ended with Kane's Wrath.
I was with you until Generals. That game was fantastic! I'm really sad the second one never made it out.
AverageViking me too. This vid was going well then derailed when he trashed generals. I was subscribe to his channel but thumbs down :)
He lost me too. I really enjoyed Generals.
C&C Generals: still a better love story than Tiberian Twilight.
You obviously never played Renegade multiplayer. :')
Was so epic!
Quick answer: Whoever made C&C 4
EA xD
Red alert 2 was the best 👍
Perhaps. But the first C&C game still _is_ the best :p
Hell yes. Lol, I remember putting in hours upon hours into Red Alert 2.
Red alert 2, big part of my life, specially my childhood, i could never get enough of it, the andrenaline man in intense online matches.... i was shaking while playing from andrenaline.
Kirov reporting.
No generals is better
Who removed the like after insulting command and conquer: generals
zein chartouni me bro
Me
I didn't, but that's because I haven't liked it yet.
I was just expecting a better criticism than the story and the graphics being bad.
I would've liked to have heard how the gameplay and faction differences compare to other games; especially in ZH with the various generals for each faction.
Me
I hope THEY Remaster C&C Generals 🥰
To be honest, I disagree with your point on Generals and no one could like it. I thought it was great for its time, a fairly un-textured game but I've probably spent easily over 2000hours over the course of the past 10 years. When you didn't have internet to play this game online, the Skirmish kept me playing every day.
Mezmarr games awsome. Graphics are skin deep what matters is the gameplay.
The End what about the gameplay? I played RA2 first than generals series. I find that generals is far easier and superior than that RA1 and RA2 2d style.
Can’t believe you dropped the ball on Command and Conquer Generals. It was hugely successful, actively played online and a huge community keeping it alive today.
Lost track of how many games you didn’t have footage for... just grab some footage and provide a credit.
well Generals just like a Sub Series for me, I did play it, and it's a good game but not enjoyable for me, I love Tiberium Wars and and Kane's Wrath and Red Alert Series more
I played almost all of the CaC series and not to hate, but I played generals twice and pretty much finished playing all the games right then and there.
I don't think every CAC fan agrees that generals was the best. But hey you're allowed your opinion. In my opinion tiberium wars and (edit: wrote the same thing twice right here) CAC 2 were my favourite and the best.
However my oldest brother believes only NoD based games were the best cause he was a NoD enthusiast and enjoyed their lore most.
Generals was the best until CnC3 came out
I know some people liked the Generals multiplayer, but it was kinda eh. RA2 before it was way better, Generals and C&C 3 kinda dropped the ball and led C&C into irrelevancy. Dawn of War came out one year later and made Generals and its weird setting look like a joke. Rise of Nations, WC3, Rome: Total War, I was a huge C&C fan and the later C&C games weren't on my radar. The first two Tiberium, Red Alert games + Renegade are forever classics.
This noob thinks the Washington DC level in the C&C 3 NOD campaign is difficult. So ofc he doesn't like C&C Generals because he doesn't know good gameplay, rather he concentrates on the aesthetic, story and presentation more than anything just listen to him. It's all about sprites and atmosphere and actors and stages and FMV in his video. He glosses over Frank Keplacki (never even mentions him lol) while he is gushing about Hell March. He is good a making videos and posting them on CZcams but he 'aint much of a C&C Fan really.
A true Good Old Gamer! I have only watched 6 minutes of your C&C discussion and I Love it!
this guy " needs an attitude adjustment "
He is obv saying his opinion, which is shit lol.
C&C Generals was AWESOME! I don't mind lower quality graphics / animation as much as the gameplay at all! I still play it now - making my own maps with Worldbuilder is great fun :)
@@ff1511 Made in the U S of A

Preeeeeetty sure reviews are based of the reviewer, there wasn't any mention of surveys so... but generals was pretty fucking ordinary when it came to the C&C games franchise
i lost my cd key
KMS
Okay okay i will work
Sorry but Generals had an awesome balanced multiplayer game. It introduced well a good combination of off map combination with the actual play.
and that was their aim. Obviously most people who liked C&C Generals also liked online matches. I remember playing Generals a few times with a friend, but i do not remember anything about the story or even the units anymore. But the stuff from C&C Tiberium Sun is a timeless classic for me, because i liked that Tiberium universe more than the other C&C Games. Those are always for other people. He did not like Generals. So what? it was clearly not his thing and he did not sugarcoat it. I'm also sure there are a lot people who only like the Red Alert games.
C&C4-"I don't even know where to start on this dumpster fire" All that needs to be said.
I am still playing RA2. Out of all of C&C this is the one I am returning to every 2-3 years.
Pretty sure Starcraft was originally supposed to be a Warhammer 40k game but GW pulled out, which was why a lot of the units they have are very similar to 40k like protos being eldar and zerg being tyranids.
Well they wanted to make a warhammer game and had plans for it but GW didnt want to give them the licencing since it was the 1990's and they wernt confident in the gaming market
It was.
Maybe it was for the best because if they made the rts game we wouldn't have DoW 1 or 2, instead we would have a cheesy MOBA that isn't grimdark like DoW was.
lol what... starcraft was orc in space... dude... orc in space... check history, no shitty warhamer any near
@@kuzmakiryukhantsev7172 the entire history of the warcraft/starcraft series is really linked to blizzard being cucked by GW though
all the factions in warcraft pretty much exist and look really similar to the ones in warhammer fantasy
and well, starcraft's stuff sounds really really similar to 40k, with marines, alien swarms assimilating DNA and biomass, and old high tech aliens
the warhammer franchises are painted all over the blizzard RTS
doesn't make them bad games, just that GW cucked them by not giving the license when the thing was pretty much in the works
at least that's the general consensus
EA
ruined c&c
ruined Star Wars battlefront
well build time machine and kill....wait
I loved CnC I grew up with Tiberium Sun, and still play them to this day, I remember when Renegade came out, they built the whole game with the idea that it would need to run on the same hardware that the RTS would run on, so it does not look as good as it could have done, with that self-imposed restriction.
AND I just got to your CnC Generals section, so so wrong about that game, Generals was awesome and much beloved by fans of the series, local Network was and still is a blast.
Note, on Tiberium Wars, the campaign was totally playable without cheats, until a certain patch came out which aimed to make some units fairer in multiplayer but made them underpowered for the campaign, making those campaign missions impossible. Also if you just level up ONE unit (anything including riflemen ) to the max, that one unit is just impossible to kill and will level any number of units.
At times like these I miss kane he always had a plan
