This is super impressive, only issue is that there's no way metroids would survive in such a cold climate
But on a more positive note, I love how you interpreted the plasma beam pickup into 3D

They usually end up sluggish in cold temperatures its how the pirates can transport them easily in the prime games. Direct cold attacks + a concussive blast (missile) kills them.
Plasma beam doesnt one shot them neither right?

Samus dropping her helmet and the metroids in an Ice ecosystem is a bit off, but minor compared to the work you folks have done! Love the amount of work that went into the practical effects, the set, all of it! Great job guys and keep on it!

cgi and live usually have that effect vut this was still wonderful and made me think of the warhammers community fan stuff. i wished nintendo was more lax to allow this kind of things metroid would benefit immensely from it
Samus has finely tuned reflexes. She would have 'grapple-beamed' her helmet (or not drop it in the first place). But this Metroid franchise is very special.
The Metroid in the ice environment might have been near its second form, maybe it was adapting to its environment? Either way I really enjoyed this too.

I mean Samus takes off her helmet and suit at the end of most of the games, so it kind of makes sense. And it's also a bit more realistic. She probably wouldn't want to be in a stuffy helmet all the time, especially if she's exhausted after a fight or something. Now the use of that in this video is kind of weird. Why wouldn't she put the helmet back on when fighting Ridley? So I do see your point actually; nevermind lol
@@LtCdrXander You have to realize where is supposed to be..thats a planet that is completely frozen over aka it's cold as hell. Assuming there is oxygen, no one takes their helmet off to a sweaty face on far below sub zero, that is a suicide move and that is VERY unlike Samus.

Yeah, this "videoclip" doesnt make any sense what so ever. There is close to no content shown here and still it manages to implement plot holes xD Crazy
What gets me is that Samus' suit isn't one she puts on or takes off like an actual suit. It's an extension of the zero suit she wears which is an extension of her body from power she was given by the Chozo. So when she "took off" her helmet, it should've just de-materialized as a result of the suit materializing based on the state of Samus' body and mind. Also the way she was sitting up with her legs straight out like a little kid looked derpy as hell lol.

I wouldn't have put the Metroids known for their ice weakness, in the area. I also wouldn't have made the Metroid die in 1 shot from plasma beam, they are suppose to be kinda resisting? idk why Samus took of her helmet outside of showing the actress. Samus looked great, the morphball is very cute, so I still enjoyed it^^
My take is that the Metroids are weakened by the ice and that is why they are one-shotted.
In a longer film, perhaps a reason for contriving taking the helmut off could occur but you could head canon it as part of her suit not working so she takes it off for breathing or because the sights aren't working and its giving her confusing inputs.
Which might explain why she gets beat up because she was prior disorientated.
(Just thinking like a writer, there are a few potentials or changes. But given the current situation the above fits fine.)

Imagine Devinsupertramp x Corridor Crew making a short film about the game Infamous Second Son with tons of parkour and vfx(neon, video, smoke and concrete). Man, that would be a level 100 epic.

I really appreciate the ambition that went into this. It's a valiant effort. I think even as a short though the story is very weak. Samus behaves in ways that she wouldn't as does Ridley. I also understand that you'd want to show her face but removing the helmet feels contrived and unnecessary which would be out of character without a good reason. If her visor was severely damaged and impeded her sight that would be a good reason though in canon we've seen her fight through a broken visor. Ridley would also be ruthless and wouldn't hesitate to finish her. I think the overall production would have greatly benefited from some good storyboards.
The CGI was also quite rough. I think mostly because it wasn't rendered in a way that was lit to match the environment which contibuted to the B movie camp feel. In this case probably less is more. Ridley in particular might have been better treated with ominous hints and scant screentime.
The costume was a big sticking point for me as well. It was too flimsy and her knee pads shook onscreen. The blaster and gauntlet were pretty far off model, the chest and back were a bit wonky, and the plates on the abs and side were loose rather than solidly meshed. There was a weird weightlessness to the suit and morphball as well in that they don't feel like half a ton, or even a quarter, of powered armor.
In general I really like your work, the vacation venue stuff in particular, and I appreciate from an artist perspective wanting to branch out and do some story driven stuff. It will invite allot of criticism especially dealing with beloved IP like this. Kudos on tackling such a thing! I hope my critique doesn't come off too harsh. I'd actually love to offer any advice you'd be willing to take. I personally work in the entertainment industry and know quite a bit about CG and VFX pipelines and I think you'll be really big some day.
Relax dude this is CZcams..not Hollywood..and maybe next time lead with you being in the industry and offering your advice and encouragement before slamming cause you come off as being a dick..

@@MrFryin Unfortunately critique can often feel that way. As an artist of any medium critique is very important especially when that critique is detailed and specific. These are all bullet points on a list of things to consider when producing future art. None of this is meant to tear down or 'slam' anyone but is offered in good faith and hopes to see even better art from the artist being critiqued.
Congratulations and pats on the back are all well and good but they don't help an artist grow. I've seen allot of growth in Devin's work and, seeing him step into a field that I'm familiar with, I wanted to help. It is also unfortunate that tone doesn't translate well to text but it's all love from me. 😊

Totally agree with you here, a valiant effort but poorly written. The moment Samus took her helmet off I asked 'why?' Samus would never do that. Such an event must be written into the story. In my own attempt at writing Metroid Fanfiction, Samus removes her helmet to only reveal her identity to Ridley alone because of the hatred she feels for the murder of her family, though my Samus is a younger, less experienced character with a hotter head than in the games.

That's some amazing attention to detail, since that was revealed to be her passcode on the GFS Olympus in Prime 3.

Holy cow! This is incredible! The set design, the way Samus's suit looks, and especially Ridley, its awesome work! Feels very much like Metroids inspiration from Alien! You guys deserve a ton of praise!
My only complaint is how stiff she looks as she walks in the armor, but I understand that’s because of the practical application of the actual outfit,

Notice how for some reason theres more armor under her left arm too, once you see it, it looks weird lol
the pauldrons weigh ten pounds each. this is an old armor set of pigtails and power tools'.
@@romanchristensen6492 irl or? If they are 10 pounds it makes sense the actress is stiff. Ofc in game her suit is powered so it wouldn't feel restictive, probably something similar to an iron man suit
@@isaacstetski irl, sorry. should have specified haha. they were made with pepakura, bondo and fiberglass way before 3d printing really took off and before she had a lot of the knowledge she had today.
she also had to remove one set of the rib armor (she has 3 rib plates as opposed to 4), because it would cut into her and it pushed her arms up higher into a right angle. this armor is pretty stiff and restrictive overall, and real life armor definitely does not behave or work like video game armor. 😂
this suit of armor is sooo old, but her newest samus suit is pretty cherry, especially after having worked in the prop making and craftsman industries for a few years now. 😍

God, I knew I loved this franchise, but it's been so long since Samus Returns, and I forgot just how much I love it
This fandom is pretty great. There’s so many awesome fan games (like AM2R), animations, and even live action stuff like this. Great work 👍. My only complaint is the CGI for the Metroids and Ridley but it’s understandable cause this is fan made. The suit and location look awesome, and the timing for the music is really good. Hopefully people keep making stuff like this.
Yeah. It's too bad though that everything has to come from fans while Nintendo hasn't done jack shit

Nice job! The only issue I have is why would Metroids be on an Ice Planet? Cold is their only weakness. Doesn’t make sense. Her Ice Beam is her defense against them not the plasma beam. But everything else was awesome!
Actually the Galactic Federation was successfull in creating coldresistant Metroids. Also Mutations arent that strange for Metroids.

@@nukaquantum7 They look different as brian said but that doesn't explain why they'd suddenly die to one shot from a plasma beam, a beam they are invulnerable too. The Metroids weakness to cold is a BIG part of the metroid cannon.
@@KeMiZe44 In the prime games, the Space Pirates used cold to transport them (its one of the pirate logs), they don't outright die, they get sluggish, but will die after a while from being too cold and prolonged exposure. Extreme heat can kill them too, but has to take more shots. The author of this probably took Prime into consideration.
@@nukaquantum7 Actually, while you are correct, those metroid were among the only existing metroid left, and were destroyed by Commander Malkovich. The rest went kablooey along with the research station they lived on, all remaining metroid DNA samples (as far as we know) and SR388 when Samus and Adam the AI decided that outcome would be preferable to the SA-X taking over the universe.
Basically, that means this can only take place after the events of Super Metroid, but before Fusion.

Okay, so, a couple of things I liked here.
-The slower pace and scan visor almost make me think of this as a Prime prequel, after Metroid 1 or Zero Mission.
-The music is PERFECT. It just makes my ears melt, especially the "Item Get" piece.
- I'm super impressed with the Gunship and Ridley models, they fit so well into the environment.
-Samus herself fits perfectly, and I like the little lights all over the suit, reminds me of Samus Returns on 3DS.
-I love the actress (Ainsley Bircher) you picked for Samus here. The voice is perfect, and her facial expressions are great, displaying the fear, confusion, and "I'm sick of your sh** Ridley." Which is why her taking off the helmet doesn't bother me as much as others.
- Ridley is so EXPRESSIVE! While he can canonically speak, he doesn't need to because his lava-like eyes and twisted smirk do all the talking, just like the games.
However...
- The Metroid segment feels really off, Metroids can't survive in the cold, so why are they on an Arctic Planet? They don't really match the environment well, they're obviously CG, and how does the Plasma Beam kill them? Granted, the model itself is great, just needs some material and lighting changes, maybe resembling glass or Jello?
I think you can tell though, I really liked it! You and your team did an amazing job, with only the Metroid segment being off to me. Reading other comments, I agree that it's different from the games, but it's a FILM, so I understand that changes have to be made differently for this medium.
Edit: I know it's live action, but I like the word "model" more than "puppet."

Great short film, but I don't like the idea of samus running away from ridley.
I agree with other comments that she looks stiff in the suit but it's kinda charming in a way it feels like I'm watching star trek 🤷♂️, same with the CGI
I absolutely loved it! I would just say I thought Metroids couldn’t survive cold temperatures, also I feel like Samus doesn’t really backdown from a fight. I think she would have destroyed Ridley.
I thought Samus dropping her helmet then having it changed places was a little off-putting. Regardless, really awesome fan movie outside of these couple things.

Well, given the intro, I think this is supposed to happen after Metroid 1/ZM, but before Prime. If that's the case, maybe that's meant to lead into Ridley's return in Prime? He'd just have to get the robot parts.

I am most impressed by the practical effects used for Ridley and the morph ball, I was genuinely shocked at the Ridley reveal, maybe it's just me but in that one scene he looks like he's really there in the flesh. Y'all had to have used practical effects to accomplish that, surely?

Nah there are def moments where ut gets eerily quiet before finding items, fighting bosses, and event triggering moments
Yeah! I'm not saying there isn't music at all but there are moments in the gsme where they tone the music down or just cut it entirely right before a fight then they drop it when the fight starts
i hate the music, this is not starwars, this is metroid, it doesnt feel scary and lonely enough, be more creative

This is amazing. You probably get this all the time but I'm a die hard Metroid fan. I have even brought Samus into Destiny 2 with small stories in the descriptions of my videos to explain how Samus ended up helping the Vanguard. So many people love my designs for ALL of her suits, so much so other players have started using Samus on their account. Amazing work!

This was incredible, as a self-proclaimed super fan of Samus and the entire Metroid series, gas even Metroid other m, this was really nice to see. It's clear a lot of effort was put into this work of art. The music was beautifully composed and phendrana drifts gave me goosebumps when I first heard it oh my goodness! More please more!

I think you did very well. I understand what a complex process it can be. Kudos for a job well done. I personally would probably want to redo the floating metroids just because of the reality contrast between them and Samus. But it's a Short...and I get that...but you could have something here. Something a world wide audience would likely want to see.
Nice cosplay, very crisp details. Wish the HUD was a little more detailed. But killer all around
