Karan Johar interview with Rajeev Masand I Takht I Kalank I Drug party

  • In this interview with Rajeev Masand, filmmaker #KaranJohar responds to the accusation that he recently hosted a “drug party” for his movie star friends, that he only promotes star kids, he is over reliant on movie stars, and that his film production company doesn’t take enough risks. Karan also addresses the colossal failure of #Kalank and clears the air about his next film #Takht, which industry sources say has been indefinitely postponed if not completely shelved.

What an interview- man Rajeev is getting bolder! Asking very forthright and tough questions to one of the industry's most powerful figures, which most other interviewers may be too intimidated to do. Right off the bat we get an intense tete-a-tete. And equal props to Karan Johar for holding his own and answering back with clear and convincing answers, unashamed to be himself, taking accountability for what he did.

Better than any other outsider launched by Dharma. Karan has directed 6 films and all were box office+critical success. He won the best director award for kkhh and mnik and got nominated for adhm, kank and k3g. Surely he is one best filmaker of country and also launched outsiders and also worked with Vicky. What I realised from this beautiful interview is that no one is free of anxiety. For indie filmmakers who get critical acclaim and love and ratings, money is a pain point. Reach is a pain point. And they have their own sleepless nights and anxiety about that. Whereas for someone at the box office, with a ton of reach, access and money, something else is his pain point. So the journey of any artist is speckled with anxiety, a mixed bag of emotions. Just imagine a Counselor who has both an independent filmmaker and Karan Johar as their client. First one walks in and talks about how they can’t make a living no matter how much critical acclaim they have. And next walks in a very very successful filmmaker commercially and then talks about how he’s or she’s never taken seriously as an artist. I could feel for Karan Johar’s pain. Just that it’s on the other side of the fence. But I felt it as much none the less. Lovely interview. Need more like these. Makes us all think. And introspect. And look more keenly at the world outside as well. I wish Dharma the best for Takht. I hope as a film buff that it’s a lot of fun to watch. 💪🏽

This is my first Karan Johar interview and may I just say how amazed I am at the hate he feels from the media! Here is a guy who is running his father's beloved legacy and honestly I like dharma production movies, but those who say they don't have relatable stories like where have you been? That has never been Dharma Productions end game they've always given real entertainment pieces and that Karan stays true to that is really smart. No other agency can do what Dharma does so well. With that I'd like to say great mind set for wanting to change it in this era of content, if you nail it you will be a force to reckon with!
Also what the hell is wrong with star kids getting into the business? I wouldn't want to join with all this hate and the constant comparisons between them and their parents, who in some cases have untouchable careers.

As far as "my" type of movies are concerned Dharma production makes movies that are larger than life but their stories are pretty decent one time watches in my opinion, I don't see the need to hate them to like content based material.

I guess he always takes hate for an average movie. I mean people bash him left right and centre when a film is average like kalank or bad like soty2 but they never praise him when he releases a film like Kapoor and sons or raazi when he is the producer of all the films.

You're delusional. As a producer he needs to launch people he thinks can become successful. He's not going to launch a friend's kid if he thinks they can't do anything. He launched Alia the THE FACT IS she is an extremely talented actress. He was right in launching her. He launched Varun and he's a good actor. He launched Janhvi and she did good in her first role.

why would he not involve star kids when he make a movie which involves so much of money, I think he is just trying to grape maximum audience and that idea has really worked for his company, and ya when he makes small movie he do work with outsider as well like others which is save. I don't understand why people are blaming him. let him do what he likes with his money. If he take outsiders which might be way cheaper and easy. He is not stupid. In between I love his work since I was a kid.
