Big timely warning to the world in 2015 with his published "Winter Is Coming" and all the NATO countries likely heeded the advisement to some degree (but not enough...?) I'm able to believe a necessary trap was set (if only by God) and the glorious boys in Ukraine pay the piper for our temporary world solution against a hyperbolic juggernaut of evil. A reformed political future must remain for Russian people but the evil war machine must be harnessed for NATO protection. This is actually win-win and they need to become a force of stability to the world. The entrenched pedophilia of the institutions must be thoroughly and highly publicly smashed from the start or success can not be had.

Garry missed one essential: The INJURED count for more than the dead. The latter can be honored -- and then, largely, forgotten.
No-one can look past seriously injured veterans -- who roam society telling their tales. Politically, they are dynamite.
Because Putin did not declare his project as a 'war' -- Russian contract soldiers are not held to war-time codes of conduct -- to wit -- they can quit.
They just can't quit while on operations within Ukraine. THIS is why every imaginable gambit is researched as to how to get back home.
Lastly, and this must be emphasized, Putin is not paying his boys Combat Pay. On paper, his boys are deemed to still be back in Mother Russia.
So, Putin has it going both ways: The boys can't quit, they're in Ukraine; the boys don't deserve Combat Pay because they're still in their barracks. (!)
    See how that works? Cute.
Payments are due in rubles -- which Putin can print at will -- yet the cheapskate STILL does not pay off. (!)
Of course, the Russian medical system, as a whole, is now over-loaded with wounded veterans.
In the meantime, Putin's critical war plants are in hiatus because they can't obtain micro-chips. Oops.

"The very mediocre leadership of the free world." That's the main point. That said in Europe this has much to do with the long streched leadership of Merkel. Strategic thinking slept away all over Europe. Safety wasn't any more an issue. And that's the in reason why Merkel thought she could make a sacrifice of German energy safety to get the Greens satisfied. Shutdown of all the well functioning and clima neutral nuklear power was a horrible mistake concerning freedom, economics and prosperity in Europe.

Putin restarted the Cold War 15 years ago. But Western democratic leaders refused to acknowledge this reality because it would have required them to change their spending priorities, which would in turn have called for sacrifice from their people. No Western leader since the Reagan/Bush/Thatcher years has had the nerve to call for sacrifice.

action was enabled by the drawing of Russian forces to Kherson but I believe the real damage to Putin will still be in the south as there are some 25000 now unsupported troops who will be transmitting their plight home to Russia, this cannot be hidden by the regime and hopefully will fuel an uprising maybe before they're slowly crushed and humiliated? It may take a little longer as you suggested Servastopol? But it will happen, Putin is finished and believe he knows it, I will not be surprised if he runs to a despot haven, North Korea perhaps?
