Justified: City Primeval is Just Bait & Switch

  • This show is Justified in name only and the only reason anyone even started watching it is because FX baited us all into thinking this was an actual revival of the original and would feature the Raylan Given we all loved.
    It's nothing of the sort. It's just the worst kind of bait & switch.

    Just a quick thanks to everyone that been around for a while and for those that are new here. Welcome! Sincerely great to have you all here.
    For those here that haven't yet subscribed, consider doing so if you enjoy it. It's free (I mean, I've never been charged for subbing to a CZcams channel
    😉) and it'll help me out a bunch. In fact, as for this video going live the channel is at 450 total subscribers, which is awesome...but that means it's only 50 away from 500! And as it turns out, not very far away from reaching 3000 total watch hours. Those numbers are important because they're the first level of "monetization." Nothing big really, and what it opens up things I have ZERO interest in trying to do (Super Chats, Memberships, etc) but I'm guessing that reaching this number alerts the YT algorithm that people are watching...so if you enjoy the channel but haven't yet taken the plunge, please do! Thanks! MAB
    Also, this revival of "Justified" has pissed me off to no end, and it's why there have been back-to-back video about it! ;)

      I think you're totally wrong.
      I came for Leonard Elmore and I got Leonard Elmore. It's true they swapped Raylon in for Raymond Cruz but that's not a stretch in that Cruz is pretty much a prototype for Raymond.
      The script is really faithful to the book. There's not Hollywood agenda being pushed. They wanted to do another Leonard Elmore story and tied it to Raylon to do it.

      @nachonachoman I think the show is Great, the people in the comments are just mad that they didn't get exactly what the were getting before. His take on the majority of the cast being white is incorrect also ( which I don't understand why he would highlight anyway ) most of the screen time has white actors and I'm not complaining. This review seemed like a wonky bitch fest that je didn't get back the original show.

      @@jiveturkeylee OP didn't say it. Maybe implied it but there's a narrative going on it sucks because it's infected by wokeness.
      I really don't get that. The DA used a woke argument to get a bad person off. And the show isn't saying that's good. In fact, it's showing both the DA and judge, two virtue signalling ppl, being two faced.
      I just feel really insulted by this train of thought. Out of all the stories out there, the Leonard verse is the best in terms of not conforming to lazy narratives about ppl. Everybody is not what they seem. And they kept true to that in the adaptation.

      Timothy Olyphant on rural America: ‘I hate to tell you, but racism is alive & well’
      Racism is indeed alive and well in all parts of the world. In America, the stereotype is that it happens more often in rural areas just like on Justified. Racists are all over the place though. I live in a moderately big city, and my ex-mother-in-law is the worst kind of racist there is. Every time she drops my daughter off at my house, she tells her to run really fast to the front door so the black family two houses down doesn’t “snatch” her. She’s such an insufferable woman. So yes, there are people who talk like that in this day and age. They may not wear Klan hoods, but they exist, and they are awful.
      You actually thought he was cult maga? LOL CRY CRY CRY because the rest of us are tickled that you closed minded people didn't enjoy it!

    I absolutely agree. 💯
    When they first announced, Justified Primeval City, I was cautiously excited. I wanted to see Raylan return as the charismatic, badass, intelligent, sharp shooting marshal that we all know and love.
    The first two episodes seemed as if we were going to get classic Raylan, just a little older and wiser, but they quickly used the old bait and switch.
    Carolyn became the main focus, Clement is on the same level as the Crowes (what is with the kimono and underwear?), and of course, we have to be reminded of racism every 10 minutes.
    Raylan has gotten about 10-15 minutes screen time every episode. The only reason the title says Justified is for the built-in in fan base, because they know that no one would watch it without Raylan.
    This has been highly disappointing, but honestly, what should I have expected? They have done it will many major IP's like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and recent Marvel.
    Fortunately, there is the original series that I can return to and watch anytime to get both a little Raylan and a perfect tv show!! 😁

      Funny you mention there's always the original series because I'm starting the script for the next video all about the need to collect hard copies of media rather than relying on these various studios or companies to stream them to you, because they are proving that they're perfectly happy to alter them or memory hole them all together.
      Thanks for the comment! MAB

    I've watched every episode so far. I think it was supposed to be a fish out of water premise but if so, it's failed. They're taking a two-episode story and stretching it out to cover a season. Raylan has zero chemistry with any of the main characters. Why is he sleeping with Carolyn Wilder? There's no intimacy between the two of them, no trust, no spark of mutual attraction. The show is pretty much a lot of Raylan walking around being frustrated, which I can relate to with this series.

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 10 měsíci +1

      That's what happens when creators jam in a character that wasn't supposed to be there. This just isn't Leonard's story anymore because instead of having the local Detroit detective on the case being the Raylan character, you have Raylan sleepwalking in his place. None of it feel right.
      I agree, I think that's what they were going for, but as much as I love Raylan as a character (from the original) I think he already WAS that back in Harlan, if that makes sense. Him returning after having "got out" made him different.
      Hell, this is almost like watching another movie with Olyphant in it and pretending it's Raylan! Like, "If you wanted to know what Raylan would have been like had he been a porn producer, you need to watch The Girl Next door!" BTW, he was awesome in that and it's a movie that's WAY better than it should be. haha
      I like Raylan back in Kentucky...;) Thanks a bunch for the comment! MAB

    After 8 episodes, Raylan -the gun slinger- fired his gun at someone once (well, 3 times, but at the same dude), and he regret that so much he had to retire from the Marshall's Service.
    Raylan, the guy who shot and killed a perp from the back, and just said "If you wanted me to shoot you in the front, you shoulda run towards me", turned in his badge because he felt bad about shooting at a known criminal, a murderer, the guy who wrecked havoc in a city for weeks, had threatened his daughter, and was on his current (although not fitting) girlfriend's house to kill her.
    Raylan Givens, the angriest man in Kentucky, felt it wasn't justified to shoot the known murderer on an on-going killing spree because on that particular occasion, the psycho killer facing him across a dark room reached for a mixed tape instead of the gun he was 100% positively packing.
    This might be still worth it if it leads to a real good, actual revival mini-series of Justified. Y'know, the one with the real Raylan.
    I'm just glad I pirated this. If it leads to anything worthwhile, I'll consider buying it.

    • @themiddleagedbaby

      Sure, but that old Raylan should have never been the hero we all liked...at least that seems to be the message. ;)

Yeah...this was never Raylan.
      As for a legit revival, can you imagine the balls on the production team to wait until about 15 minutes left in this season/series to show us what COULD HAVE been an actual reason to revive the original series? After running fans off week after week, they do that? The hubris is noteworthy for sure. Thanks, MAB

All this overweight, bitchy, lady had to do was share some booze with him and he automatically jumps into bed with her. Lol. I guess Mags just didn't have the right timing then (she was nicer to Raylan). This was just horrible casting by the producers.
      Perhaps this shortened run made it easier to get their little agendas satisfied without too much thought to the overall entertainment value, thinking all they to do was use an Elmore Leonard story with TO, Boyd, and some of the same writers and the stupid masses would just swallow this BS. great vid, agree it was terrible.
    1. neutered raylan is boring
    2. relationship doesn't remotely work
    3. daughter was terribly written.
    a. unlikely this is Raylan and Winona's parenting outcome. Rebellious ok but just naive, whiny, and not street smart - nah, that's not it.
    b. if you have to go this way then it could still work if she starts annoying and develops, cool. if she's this character briefly in 1-2 episodes in the middle, cool. but starting annoying and then just disappearing is flat dumb writing. it's a bunch of pivotal screen time that is just wasted.
    4. bad guy doesn't work, he's just established as totally bad then it goes if anything to backwards to kinda dumb and basic. so leads to no emotional payoff in the end.
    5. mob was lame
    6. detroit law enforcement was lame.
    a. raylan drives around with the one guy Wendell for the beginning and that goes nowhere.
    b. tough guy has what one/two moments but otherwise is completely flat character.
    c. maureen or whatever her name was had some interesting elements but none of it paid off because there wasn't any coherence.
    7. spent a lot of time on Sandy that really didn't contribute much to the story in the end.
    8. audio, visual was weak. it's 2023 you can film gritty, dark scenes and still make it look good. just rip off michael mann aesthetic and this would have been way better.
    9. should have kept Keith David around longer, that Judge Guy character was an actual Justified type character.

      Damn, that could have been a fun twist! Yeah...there is no connection AT ALL to the original series. The mash-up of those things makes no sense unless you cynically realize it's just to lure you in based on you love of the former show.
      It's not that there couldn't have been a revival of the series...but it would have taken a story that felt like the first series. Perhaps maybe something else was going on in Kentucky and Raylan had to go back again. Art has retired and Rachal is now officially Chief. Tim has now stepped up and is the lead Marshal. And because the crime is Kentucky related, Raylan finds himself having to visit Boyd in federal prison from time to time (the way he visited Dickie Bennet occasionally) for some insight as to what's going on.
      Now, I LOVED the ending of the original series and pretty much hate when people can't let a story end...but something along these lines could have been done and at least it would have felt true to "Justified." Thanks, MAB

      Oh boy...I wanted to bring her up in the first video I did on the show but sort of ran out of space, so there was no way I wasn't mentioning it in the second one. Yup, she's awful in every measurable way. And nearly everyone would have seen this a few years ago, and there's NO WAY they'd have hooked him up with anyone like that in the original series because it would have made no sense. We're gonna' watch him go from Winona to Carolyn Wilder? BWAHAHA!
      Aside from being incredibly sexy, Winona was flirty, fun, a bit crazy, pushed all of Raylan's buttons, and always looked at Raylan like the sun rose and set in his eyes, even when she couldn't be around him. And as much as she treated him poorly, you could always see WHY Raylan didn't want to let go. Wilder is none of that, and she's awful to Raylan, and not in some flirty way. The only way this makes any sense is if they wanted to make a point...and given much of the ex-husband's dialog and her complete lack of response to being upset by it, I think we all head it loud and clear.

    You said it! The latest episode is crap! Not what we were expecting. I wouldn’t have had a problem with Raylan hooking up with an attractive black attorney. One that fits his previous standards. Like you said, they were all hot! Rachel in season one would have been more believable and I really thought that was going to happen actually. Aside from that, the villains so far are terrible as well. No depth to their characters or any other characters either. I doubt we will continue watching this.

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Exactly... I wanted to cut that off at the pass since I assumed that would be the lazy response from some, but that's exactly right. It had ZERO to do with race and everything to do with being a terrible match. Raylan has a track record, and the DA falls so far outside of that there needs to be some sort of explanation as to why this would suddenly take place. There was none. It's not like she was super awesome or funny or helping Raylan and happened to be less attractive. She's awful to him, and also unattractive in comparison to his other past loves. To me, this creams 2023 where "super models" look nothing like they did...and by that I mean in shape and beautiful.🤣 This is all about celebrating this, and if you dare speak out YOU'RE the problem.
      And yeah, in putting together the videos it's incredible going back and watching scenes with the various criminals we saw in the original. Hell, I didn't even mention dickie Bennet, but what a fantastic character he was! This isn't a question of not yet having had enough time to flesh them out...they're just not that deep. I don't know if that's a result of Leonard's novel being that way (I haven't read it) or the way it's been written for screen. Either way, this is all paint by numbers stuff with the JUSTIFIED logo slapped on it and Raylan making guest appearances form time to time. Ugh...
      Anyway, appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thanks, MAB.

    Okay get ready for a little novel here...on the novel.
    I don't agree with everything you say here BUT I do think you make some good points, and there is something else relevant you're missing:
    Not only is it not a satisfying "Justified" follow-up, *It isn't even a good adaptation of "City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit". The message of this show and the message of Leonard's novel are completely different!
    First, let's just start with something simple. The Judge who Mansell kills in this version of "City Primeval" is kind of an asshole. The Judge from the book though? He's not only corrupt, not only kind of an asshole and kind of crass, he is an openly racist, misogynistic piece of garbage. And he's still black.
    So that's one thing. But let's go a step further and get to the ending. Mansell's death scene.
    The death scenes play out almost word for word exactly the same except that the detective is Cruz, not Raylan, Carolyn doesn't show up as a witness, and Mansell pulls out a bottle opener...except that the meaning of the respective scenes is COMPLETELY different!
    Let's take a look at the final page of the book:
    ...
    Clement was staring at him, eyes glazed, clouding over. “You call EMS?”
    “I called the Wayne County Morgue.”
    Clement continued to stare, dazed, eyes unblinking.
    Raymond could hear street sounds very faintly, far away.
    Clement said, “I don’t believe it... what did you kill me for?”
    Raymond didn’t answer. Maybe tomorrow he'd think of something he might have said. After a little while Raymond picked up the opener from the desk and began paring the nail of his right index finger with the sharply pointed hooked edge.
    ...
    Do you see the difference? Raylan reacts to his shooting of Mansell with shock and horror. The implication, followed by the reveal in the epilogue that Raylan quits the Marshal service, is that though it is defensible, the shooting wasn't justified by his moral code, and that the Marshal service thinks it was is a reason for Raylan to get out.
    The framing in the book is COMPLETELY different. In the show, when Mansell says "What did you kill me for?" this seems to really get to Raylan. In the book, Cruz is COMPLETELY unbothered by this! In fact he's so totally unbothered he starts filing his nails with the item that Mansell pulled out of his pocket.
    With that context in mind, it changes how we view the narrator telling us that Raymond didn't say anything, and would think of something tomorrow. It's not that he was so shaken by Mansell's words he couldn't speak. It's that Mansell did so damn much that deserved killing for he didn't know where to start - so instead he signals as clearly as he can that he does not feel guilty at all for taking out a mad dog like Mansell. And the death is poetic justice - Mansell, who keeps slipping out of events that should kill him by rights, dies when he does something that really should NOT result in his death.
    City Primeval the book was about how a good cop in a broken down system ultimately realized that if nobody else was going to take out this lunatic, he had to do it himself. You know, sort of like *the original High Noon*. The ending isn't tragic, it's poetic justice.
    City Primeval the show was about how a good cop in a broken system ultimately realizes that there's no salvaging that system and he has no choice but to quit. And the show can't even stick with THAT message, since they obviously bait Raylan coming out of retirement again at the end of the show.
    I'd LOVE to see a real adaptation of the original book, but this wasn't it.

    • @anthonymarchetta8796
      @anthonymarchetta8796 Před 9 měsíci

      Having just finished the book, there are more shocking changes:
      - Carolyn is described as a bombshell. She is also completely outmanipulated by Mansell who threatens 6,000 dollars out of her
      - There is no subplot of Carolyn becoming a judge
      - The corruption angle of the Detroit police department is COMPLETELY GONE! Like completely
      - Surprise surprise, Sweety isn't gay. He has a girlfriend and even seems to consider himself something like a born-again Christian.
      - There is more to the change in the ending. After the Albanians lock up Mansell, it's Cruz who lets him out, then challenged Mansell to the shootout in the apartment he and Sandy were waiting in.
      It seems that Cruz decided that if the law wasn't going to allow him to bring in Mansell he wanted to take Mansell out himself, but in a way that he considered more honorable than locking him up or starving him to death.
      I cannot emphasize to you enough how much better the book is. It's darker, funnier, edgier, and smarter. The shows completely butchers it.

      First, thanks a ton for the long response. It added a bunch to the discussion here, so thanks!
      Second, I've yet to read the novel, so what I know about it is what I've learned from views here, so the more info the merrier. I've already tracked down a 1st edition hardcopy of the novel I'm about the order, because the only thing this show may me want to do it read that and stop watching this.
      Third, thanks to the comment section I finished the final 3 episodes and that'll be my next video which will release Monday at Noon central. Suffice it to say, the final three episodes only may me dislike this show more.
      That said, I love your take on the difference between Cruz and Raylan and that change in Raylan is EXACTLY what the show runners have been doing to him all season and it was my exact feeling as it happened in the show, though I was unaware of the difference in the novel. He's been used an avatar for what they see as bad policing, so OF COURSE for the first time in his career he'd feel remorse for what otherwise was a "justified" shoot. It allows them to show him as "to blame" as all other cops. If you bookend the first shooting of the series, him gunning down Tommy Bucks in Miami after telling him he was and forcing Bucks to pull on him so he could, to the Mansell shoot (the first time Raylan fired his sidearm all season) you can see how they've removed the hero status from him. It's appalling to do this to an established character.
      I'll be doing a third video on this season now that I've finished the final three episodes and I hope you check it out. Will go live on Monday at Noon central (fingers crossed.) Thanks a bunch for the comments! MAB

      It's the "New Thing," man!
      See: Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Indiana Jones, etc... There is this weird desire to neuter these prototypical masculine heroes. The only one recently that bucked this trend was Maverick from Top Gun, (or Ethan Hunt from the Mission Impossible movie) and that's solely because Tom Cruise is running that entire show at this point and he's CLEARLY not interested in being anyone grandad on screen. Left in someone else's hands or if you had an actor with less ego, Top Gun would have been all about "passing the torch" to the new hot shot who puts Maverick in his place and show him everything we liked about his character from the first movie was problematic. ;)
      It's crazy, really. Creators are hellbent on digging up olde properties because they're afraid of trying to create anything new because the public may reject it, and yet when they DO dig them up they alter them entirely and/or go out of their way to destroy what the very fans they need to come watch their rebooted piece of crap loved about the original. And they do this over and over again...and seem surprised each time as fans walk away. Thanks, MAB

I was praying to god that I was just misreading the scene from the trailer and they weren't really gonna sleep together, but I was wrong and the scene where they did sleep together confirmed to me that the show had killed itself.
    This show had a LOT of problems, but Raylan's relationship with that woman is certainly one of the big ones.
    And to add something else, the only good part of the show, or at least the only part I enjoyed, was the last five fucking minutes when Boyd showed up. At least Boyd still acts like Boyd and his girl is actually attractive. It also doesn't hurt that Walton is an amazing actor who was born to play Boyd Crowder.

When the 6th episode opened, I just paused it and said, "See...I told you so." haha It was just so out of character for Raylan. Oh , not sleeping with women he shouldn't given his role as a Marshal, but sleeping with an unattractive woman. Made no sense, and it was clear this was one of the MANY changes they made to the book to push today's social messaging.

      Ya, the social messaging really hurt this show. It and the writing were really hurting it. I wonder if the problem was that Graham Yost wasn't back as the show's developer? He was only in a production role this time, I believe. And to what degree of control he had over the show is up for debate, but probably minimal.
      Based on the audio commentary of the old show, it took multiple talented people, all debating and putting ideas in the pot, to make the old show, but Yost always seemed to be at the center of it all. Full admission...I've never watched the show. However, this change does not surprise me. I keep wondering if Hollywood is ever going to snap back into some kind of 'normalcy', but I'm not holding my breath these days. The 'social-engineering' will continue as long as these media corporations keep thinking that it is their solemn 'duty' to re-make society into something they think we should be like...Wokeness is the new religion (minus actually believing in God) in the West. They get to preach their 'gospel' at the rest of us, but we are not allowed to 'notice' it, or else we will get labelled or cancelled...Good times indeed! Can someone PLEASE invent the Flux Capacitor, like NOW!....

      I keep hearing people suggest we're reaching a tipping point, and I think they're crazy. Unless and until these companies go back to caring about maximizing profits over social engineering, this will continue. This is largely because for a while now they've been hiring activists which have taken over larger and larger portions of their workforce, and activists care very little about the overall health of the company. They care about their activism. See Bud Light's suicide as an example of what one activist can do to a company when she cares more about an agenda than catering to their actual paying customers.
      Now I'll say, my issues here have far more to do with the creators watering down a beloved character and using the old show's fanbase to sell this entirely different show. Not to say that the tone hasn't lurched leftward...it has, but there are far worse examples, and I've pointed out many in previous video which you might check out. ;)

    I quit watching this midway through the fourth episode.
    I feel dirty, even watching three episodes.
    I don't understand why anyone with any love for the original series could continue to watch.
    I'm not interested in seeing Justified again, after this dross, and I don't think I'll watch anything with Timothy Olyphant again, as he's proven with this show that he is a willing DEI stooge.

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 9 měsíci

      That's pretty hardcore, but I respect it. I'll forever rewatch the original series though...
      As for Olyphant, this is only an assumption on my part but it's based on who he's had on the previous show and who his friends are. I think one of his best friends in the world is Conan O'Brien, who's not exactly right-wing. And if you remember from the originals series, Constable Bob, was played by Patton Oswalt who's a raging lefty. On the other hand, Chief Art Mullen was played by Nick Searcy who's the furthest thing from that and a hilarious follow on Twitter. So who knows...
      That said, he grew up a California guy and a swimmer at USC. The cowboy thing is really just acting...so I'd assume he's likely on board with most of the progressive push. Thanks, MAB

    Also Elmore Leonard did write the novel, RAYLAN, after the show Justified was on for a couple of years, I believe. I wonder why the producers didn't look at that novel as possible source material. Raylan did also appear in RIDING THE THE RAP and PRONTO but they were already done as HBO movies with James LeGross as Raylan in one of them. I know the original series was based on the short story, FIRE IN THE HOLE.

      Yeah, all this show did was make me want to go back and read Leonard's work...most of which I'm unfamiliar with. I knew enough about Fire in the Hole to know Raylan kills Boyd at the end and that the series premiere was basically the novella. From there they took bits and pieces from Riding the Rap and Pronto (I think) and sprinkled stuff throughout the series.

    Lot of things that annoyed me about the show habe already been posted in the comments, so I will add what annoyed the hell out of me. Raylan's love interest was complaining about the governor and how "he" was going to get one of his boys on the judge's bench.
    Michigan's governor is a woman. Considering the OG Justified featured McCain/Palin and Romney signs/stickers, you can't make the case we are in a different timeline.
    Another thing that blew me away was how the show had the Albanian with the broken leg go OUT BY HIMSELF and let the antagonist out of his "panic room."

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 9 měsíci +1

      That's a great point and I thought I heard that but with everything ELSE to complain about I ignored it...but glad you brought it up! haha Gretchen Whitmer has been governor since 2000, so given we're obviously in this time line as you pointed out with the McCain/Palin stickers (great pull btw) then there's no reason Whitmer wouldn't be Governor here...and there's ZERO chance Carolyn wouldn't have liked Whitmer, except for her not being black maybe. But this had to happen when they altered the point of the novel to be all about police occupation instead of soft on crime policies allowing criminals to be unaccountable. ;)
      And yeah, it's one thing if they wanted the guy to be able to pop Mansell himself...but to let his ass take a cab (which he allowed to drive off to my loud laughter) and then hobble around? Such terrible writing...again.

    I was really looking forward to this miniseries - huge disappointment.
    1 - It's just not the same without Boyd Crowder/Walton Goggins. You couldn't help liking Boyd and secretly wanting him to get away with it. THIS villain? - I just wanted Raylan to shoot him DEAD, right from the first episode.
    2 - The writing's just nowhere near as good as on the original series - it lacks, among other things, all the clever witticisms spouted by various characters.
    3 - Raylan's love interest is TOTALLY unbelievable - it's just a ploy by the writers or producers to throw in some woke diversity. From years of "Justified", we know Raylan's type very well - tall, willowy blondes - everything this lady is NOT.
    4 - I don't know why they put Raylan's daughter into the series at all if she was just going to disappear without them having some meaningful breakthrough in their relationship - It felt like they wrote the first couple of episodes and then just decided they didn't want the character, but rather than go back and reshoot the early episodes, they just had her leave for no really good reason. (The "this could be dangerous" rationale given doesn't fly - Raylan knew that before he ever got to Detroit.)
    Oh well, guess I'll just have to be content with rewatching the original series time to time. :)

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 9 měsíci

      Nicely put.
      1- Exactly. In fact, Boyd was so likable, despite being an obvious villain, that they had to go out of their way in the final season to try and make him despicable, shooting Dewey in the back of the head in the first episode, for instance. With Mansell, there's no "there" there, so you wish Raylan would simply handle him the way he handle most other shallow bad guys on the previous show.
      2- Agreed. You won't see tons of witty GIFs produced of all the great one liners from this as you can find from the original. Mostly bland and forgettable.
      3- Dude...right? I called this while watching it with my wife and 16 year old son (who LOVES the original) in the 3rd episode and they looked at me like I was crazy. I just said, "It's 2023...this is 100% gonna' happen."
      4- This had to be a favor to Tim Olyphant as she's his actual daughter. I didn't mention her much other than to say it was obvious they were father/daughter, but yeah...unless she was purposefully acting that way she should probably find something else to do. The way she simply left and never came back was so weird. And yeah, we'd seen that Raylan had schooled Winona on being safe so the idea that Willa, even being a headstrong teenager, would wander around downtown Detroit like that made absolutely no sense. Raylan, even passively, would not have raised a daughter like that.
      And yeah...this gets a rewatch form me once every couple of years.

Half the time you can't hear what the people are saying, so you crank up the volume, only to get BTFO in the next scene. I stopped watching after episode 4 but I'm sure we saw the bad guy in his underwear several more times in the next two episodes. I bet he's wearing those when he dies.

I swear 5 minutes into the movie I was hoping I could turn on CC. haha
      And yeah, I agree with all of that. even without the bait & switch, this just isn't a very good show.
      As for the underwear thing, all I can think of is that's a thing the character does in the novel and they thought it would be cool to carry it over into the show, but having never read the book I can't verify that. If it isn't, then I'm not sure WHY that's going on. Was it a female character in her underwear every scene, the director would be blamed for his blatant misogyny and appealing to the dreaded "Male Gaze!" (All of the cops get slightly more development than a procedural usually does; one or two bad guys get more lines than other shows), but the entire plot is happening because that's what the show runner wants to have happen. It is in no way organic. We KNOW Raylan, and he has nothing to do with this story and no reason to stick around. Legally, he has no grounds to stick around. Awesome...glad you enjoyed it and thanks for being here. Please feel free to swing back through some of the older videos if you get a chance. The channel is still pretty new, and while I'm still super happy with the content of the first ones the audio isn't the best. POV is largely the same, so you may find something you like.
      Either way, appreciate you taking the time to comment and happy you're here. Thanks, MAB

    I was lucky. I started with city primeval (mistaking it for the original show and very confused that there was only one Season) and found it… pretty okay. Solid.
    Now, then I got to see the actual show and in comparison it’s…. Pure trash.
    Still wanna see season 2 because…. Well… Boyd.

    They nutered Raylan, Timothy Olephant must have caught the bad acting bug from the rest of the players in this trash.. Clement doesn't have any back story nor is he acted even decently.. I watch hoping olephant will wake the fuck up at some point and bring back the Raylan Givens as Elmore Leonard had imagined him.. I just can't imagine that he would have put his stamp on this horrible trash.. Take Givens out of this and it'll still suck.

    Rayland and Boyd Crowder had the best chemistry and dialog. Theres nothing like that in the new one. God needs the devil. The beatles needed the Rolling Stones. Even Dianne Sawyer needed Katey Couric. Who will be Rayland's Katey Couric??

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Exactly...it became what drove the show forward. Boyd was the Joker to Raylan's Batman. They were two sides of the same coin. Both from there, both with criminals for fathers. All it would have taken was a tiny change here or there and they'd have switched places...and they both knew that and hated each other for it. They saw each other in the other, and you can literally see that in the final scene where they are basically looking in a mirror at each other through the glass of the federal prison. Without that, and without that link to Kentucky, Raylan is just a less powerful character and has no connection to the story.
      Katie Couric...hilarious. hahaha Thanks, MAB

    It is based on a novel where the main character is Raymond Cruz. But I do think Rayland should be allowed to grow and change. I believe this is supposed to be part of the intent. I do agree that Sweetie is the most interesting bad guy.

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 9 měsíci

      All things being equal I'd have just preferred that bring to life the novel as written rather than force Raylan into a story he was not intended to be included in. Honestly, that's my biggest beef here. Thanks, MAB

    Add to that the fact that the scriptwriters bring in Lieutenant Cruz (the "hero" of Leonard's book) to talk to Raylan, and it undermines Raylan's legitimacy in the series. He's already useless because he doesn't do anything and has no business being there because Cruz exists in this universe.
    Raylan is no longer Raylan. And Mansell is a kind of sub-Boyd in beast and villain. At least the series, which I didn't finish, would have made me want to read Leonard's book.

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Exactly! The only thing this series did, besides making me miss the original, was making sure I go and find a good used hard back copy of Leonard's original novel. So, there's THAT at least! Thanks, MAB

    Thanks for your review. While I liked some of it a little bit more, in general, I agree with you. I felt let down at the end. It just felt like something “by-the-numbers”. With some of the numbers having to do with identity politics and/or virtue signaling. Like “and now a word from our sponsor!”
    It just didn’t really feel like JUSTIFIED to me. It felt more like fan-fiction of that series. And by fans who didn’t like what I liked about the original or even the original source novel of this series, CITY PRIMEVAL or any other good Elmore Leonard, both original work in text and the best adaptations (eg MR. MAJESTYK [which was actually written for the screen and *then* adapted as a novel. A rare occurrence for Leonard], GET SHORTY, JACKIE BROWN, OUT OF SIGHT, 3:10 TO YUMA [either version], HOMBRE, VALDEZ IS COMING, THE MOONSHINE WAR, etc). And fans who needed to give us messages.
    It was weak sauce at best.

      You're very welcome...glad you enjoyed it.
      And yeah, it felt like "Justified" in name only, and given how much I love the original series this type of bait & switch just wasn't ok for me. All this did was make me eager to read the novel, and to rewatch the original series sometimes next year...again. Thanks, MAB

      I did just watch the last episode, and while it gave me a bit of fan-service, I still felt let down and disappointed. As I said elsewhere, weak sauce at best. It was okay, at some points. But the whole was less than the sum of its parts. It has a lot of good parts, but they don’t add up to a coherent good story telling. Unlike the original JUSTIFIED. Or even a totally gonzo show, like BANSHEE.
      It just felt like they were trying too hard to tick too many boxes, and succeeding at few.
      It felt like fan-fiction. And since some of the fans were participants in the original, it had a bit of that there too. But not enough.

    So far im not sure about the show. Yes everything said here so far is correct but i had the feeling after the first two episodes that the show builds up slower but it seems we will get some action at the end of the show. Or at least i hope so. But part of the reason why Raylan is so different in this show is that the book from Elmore Leonard wich this show is based on actually had another charakter as the cop in it. And that charakter was the opposite of Raylan. Raymond Cruz is a real law man who sticks to the rules and gets forced by Mansell to break the law to catch him. And they have a standtoff at the End in wich Cruz kills Mansell. So yes putting Raylan in here was just to get the attention of the Justified fans. But i will watch the rest of the show and hope for the best.e

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Agreed...I'd have liked to have seen them simply make the Elmore Leonard novel true to his vision and allow us to know Cruz rathe than stick Raylan in there to try and get eyeballs. Thanks for the comment, MAB
