Whether they changed their name due to it being too long, to avoid having the same name as another famous person or to simply distance themselves from their family. Other celebrities who have changed their names for stage reasons are Ben Kingsley, Kirk Douglas, Freddie Mercury and Helen Mirren.

So let me get this straight, Michael Douglas had to change his actual name to Keaton because Michael Douglass's father Kirk Douglas changed his surname to Douglas. Though break for Michael Keaton
TheCelticTiger32 no, i'm spartacus
I can see your Schwartz is as big as mine
i knew that
I had to laugh at that one. Keaton can blame Kirk Douglas for making him change his last name, because obviously Michael Douglas took his father's last name. Keaton's done pretty well for himself, though. ;)
Michel Douglas son of Kirk Douglas is the famous Michael Douglas (Wall Street, etc.). Michael Douglas-now-Keaton is a whole different guy...
I'm sure Olivia Cockburn changed her name because she was trying to differentiate herself from her family. I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with the fact that her last name looks like its pronounced Cock-Burn, nope nothing at all.
if that were the case she couldve just changed it to "Coburn/Cohburn"
Should've changed it to 'Fierypenis'
johnsonflame
Probably not. I think most people think "Coburn" when they see "Cockburn". I grant you it's funny and awkward in the school playground, but that's about all.
Joey that’s exactly as I was thinking 🤔 😂
Am I the only one that finds it ironic that Michael Douglas (stage name Michael Keaton) had to change his name only because the original Michael Douglas was the son of a man (Kirk Douglas) who had to change his name, too? Now, THAT's irony.
Or a slippery slope.
That' not irony.
What's ironic is how emphasized irony
No Cary Grant? His name was Archibald Leach, a pretty unfortunate name in my opinion.

How about:
Frances Gumm - Judy Garland or Joe Yule Jr. -Mickey Rooney?
I can't believe John Wayne was only an honorable mention. One of the manliest men in cinema wouldn't have gotten anywhere with a name like Marion.
Who??

yea... his real name is Marshall Mathers III
John Mellencamp - John Cougar
Actually Aniston is Jennifer Aniston's proper last name. Her father legally changed his name to Aniston when arriving in US and Aniston is on her birth certificate.
Liam Neeson isn't changed from William, Liam is just a shorter version
If my name was Cockburn, I'd change it too.
Cockburn is better than Terhaar
Axl Rose is Bill Bailey
Bruce Willis is Walter Willis
Bob Dylan is Robert Zimmerman
Back in the late 50's a brilliant actor/comedian walked in to a talent agency and asked that they sign him up. He did an audition and the talent scouts were amazed. They said he was the funniest comedian they'd ever seen and that they wanted to sign him right away. The only thing they asked was that he change his name as it could be considered offensive.
The comedian looked them dead in the eyes and told them that the name on his resume was actually his stage name.
"Oh My God!" They exclaimed. "What was it before?"
The comedian replied "It used to be 'Penis Van Lesbian.'"
"Wow!" one scout blurted out. "I can see how you'd think 'Dick Van Dyke' is better!
And for those of you who are easily offended please don't read the above joke.
+caseymac MacL -Hilarious!
Didn't see it coming. Your *Warning* prooobably should've come 1st, tho. js
+caseymac MacL -Hilarious!
Didn't see it coming. Your *Warning* prooobably should've come 1st, tho. js
The warning is part of the joke.
***** thank you for your like! I am however a woman. My parents thought it was an unusual name. Probably why I grew up to be so screwed up!
They didn't have too, they chose too!!
to* to*
crasi fantazy Number 9 had to.
and some HAVE to bc only one person can be registered with a name in the actors union. weird but true.
Maurice Micklewhite?!?!?!??!
Better known as...
Michael Caine
I love how Nicholas Cage was like "what? I have a name that shows my relation to Francis Ford Coppolla, one of the greatest directors of all time ? fuck that I want a super hero's last name
Great list, including the honorable mentions.
I was planning to post that my favorite is Albert Brooks, but you so-and-sos actually saved him for #1. Well done!
Without knowing a thing about his actual heritage, I would have assumed Louis C.K. was Irish
Christopher he's also Mexican
Norma Jean Baker???? One of the Most Iconic Actresses of all time
I clicked here expecting (hoping) to see David Bowie on the list. I am a fan of his, but my original band obsession was The Monkees and I already knew about the name change because of the Davy Jones. But part of me thought it might not be on here 'cuz people don't really talk about the Monkees much any more. Imagine my delight when first up I got to see both David Bowie and MIke Micky Peter and Davy. Made my day!
Charlie Sheen once Carlos Estévez
Yeah and his father, Ramón Estévez (known as Martin Sheen). The only one in their family to keep their real name as their stage name is Emilio Estévez.
Their sister, Renee estevez, kept her name too tho. She's not as big as her brothers, but if you're into cheesy slasher movies she was on sleepaway camp 2 and intruder
In some Movies he is credited as Carlos Estévez
Heathers and West Wing too.
In "Machete Kills" probably as a publicity stunt
There were way more name changes back in the Golden Age of Hollywood like Judy Garland (born Frances Gumm), Fred Astaire (born Fred Austerlitz), and W.C. Fields (born William Claude Dukenfeld).
It's funny that people ask Albert Brooks if he is related to Mel Brooks considering that Mel Brooks changed his name from Melvin James Komminsky. And Michael Keaton is sometimes asked if he is related to Diane Keaton who was born Diane Hall.
Well, considering that relatives sometimes choose the same stage surname to be recognized as being related, it would actually make sense. Like for instance Charlie and Martin Sheen (Estevez).
Frances Gumm had enough troubles with her last name while working in vaudeville with her sisters. So when one impresario casually changed their act to "The Garland Sisters", she decided to change her first name as well, and thus the name Judy Garland came to be.
i think another one is Bill Nye~ it's obvious, but still pretty cool! his real name, according to my knowledge, is William Sanford.
will san the science man
J L Kepler Will Ford the Science Guy. Will, Will, Will!
It's good for the Coppola's to not have an obvious relationship to Cage either considering the amount of Cinematic Shit he's been in.
Owen Fitzgerald Every family has a black sheep. Nic Cage is the the Coppola’s.
My favorite one is Ralph Lauren changing his name from Ralph Lifshitz.
That tongue part was something I didn't need to see
A lot of Nick Cage's acting is something nobody needs to see. I guess he wants to go down as being the most memorable actor in history one way or another.
This was a good one, I never knew that these were stage names, especially Louis C.K.!
Damn wow this was a very intriguing list wow!!!
This list is actually pretty good, a lot of connections here I had no idea about
I love your channel
I'm a simple man... I see Louis I click
Shit somebody already made the same comment... it's alright I'm just gonna go to a corner and cry for a bit...
Same here!
+Sam guy ...you should cry about your sense of humor.
this aged bad
I just clicked to hear about louis c.k. whom i did not know was a name change. And found a rather plesent video. Good job watchmojo.
Surprised the Sheens weren't mentioned at least in the honourable mentions. I guess their name change is more well known.
So, Freddie Mercury goes into the honourable mentions, but some guy I never heard about gets 1st place?
Ok...
xøñχt you’re absolutely right.
At least Albert's was more necessary.
@Amber J Well I heard of Einstein, the 20'th century scientist. Obviously. But not Einstein, the actor.
Unless you're actually Albert Einstein, that seems like the most legitimate reason to change a name I could probably think of. And Finding Nemo?!?!?!?!?!?!
@@xonxt if you've never heard of him it's because you're a child, so just be silent.
Declan McManus aka Elvis Costello.
You snuck Super Dave Osborne in there without counting him! Lol.
i always thought the weirdest one was arnold george dorsey becoming engelbert humperdinck. (whatever that's supposed to be.)
I'm sorry, but the honorable mentions seemed a lot more interesting than half the list you guys focused on. I hope they were omitted because you guys just couldn't dig up any good stories about the name change.
hyped for top 10 movies with a photographer wearing a yellow and orange shirt on a submarine on mars
Other HM's:
Loop Chad- Seth Meyers
Sarah fruitloops- Beyonce knowles
Micheal Tooper- jennifer garner
Alex The doorman Johnson- Alec baldwin
Ducks are cold at night too- Tom Hanks
Reese Without a spoon - Reese Witherspoon (Spoon controversy of 98)
Alaaarmforce - Tommy lee jones
Ask your doctor about Cialis - Jennifer Lawrence
Meggie Train robbing James- Penélope Cruz
Robert Train robbers catching Phipps - Chiwetel Ejiofor
I was just as surprised as you were.
Lucille LeSeur became Joan Crawford in a "rename that celebrity" contest. She famously hated it and thought it sounded like crawfish.
Reginald Kenneth Dwight (Elton John) and Francis Ethel Gumm (Judy Garland) were smart to drop their cumbersome given names as well... and Richard Starky would never have been as iconic as Ringo Starr. :)
I thought of Bono, Sting and, most of all,”The Edge.” The freaking Edge.
Whoa, I didn't know Michael Keaton's real last name was Douglas! Good thing he did change it, or it might have been very confusing!
This is mind blowing
Estevez - Sheen, Elton John (Reginald Dwight), Danny Kaye (David Kaminsky). Madonna (Maria Louise Ciccone).
Jay Scott Greenspan - Jason Alexander. how about that one?
where is prince changed his name into O+>
Where to was The Artist Formerly Known as Prince? He was super famous and became even more so with his name change
Jamie Foxx is a perfect example of someone changing their name to help their career. He purposefully used a gender neutral name to book more stage time because he couldn't get comedy sets. But sure, let's get Hulk Hogan on here because no professional wrestlers use stage names
This doesn't have to do with the video, but I have some suggestions for top 10 lists. You could do Top 10 Scariest Comic Book Characters, Top 10 Queen Music Videos, or Top 10 Instrumental Themes in Animated Movies. This is just my opinion, but I think How to Train Your Dragon should be #1, as well as a couple other Dreamworks movies that should be on there like The Prince of Egypt, Kung Fu Panda, or Madagascar. Somebody let Watchmojo know about these please.
"Albert Einstein" you could never live up to that name
James Newell Osterberg Jr. > Iggy Pop
Robert Allen Zimmerman > Bob Dylan
Why the hell is "Bud Spencer" not in this list?
Born "Carlo Pedersoli", his stage name comes from his favorite beer, and his faorite actor Spencer Tracy.
Terrence Hill too....
.....but they didn't really HAVE to change their names, they never had huge Hollywood careers, really, and still did mostly Italian movies.
Cary Grant. Real name: Archibald Alexander Leach
Douglas - Keaton story - this story is like a jigsaw puzzle 😆
Next video: top 10 celebrities who didn't have to change their names but did so anyway
Kirk Douglas is 102. He's a WW2 veteran.
My aunt didn't make the list. Real Name: Maureen FitzSimons, Stage Name: Maureen O'Hara. Producer Erich Pommer came up with the name change because FitzSimons was too long for the marquee.
Sorry about your aunt's passing last year-I did a painting of her from "The Quiet Man"
Thank you, I think about her everyday...
You're welcome
please make a top 10 about content on CZcams
Tbh, Norma Jean Baker and Anna Mae Bullock should have been really high up on that list.
Surprised they didn't mention Martin Sheen
I was really expecting Gene Wilder and Elton John to be in this video somewhere. I was really disappointed.
I was about to comment "Freddie better be on this list," but them I realized he probably won't. Imagine how happy I was to see him😅❤️
5:43 first time I laughed loudly while wathcing a watchmojo video, nice one
Everything was great until that guy got stabbed in the neck and I'm like, "really?" I know you could find a clip of that guy in a film that didn't involve bloody murder.
i swear at first Olivia Wilde already sounds like a pornstar but that damn, her real name was even worse.
Louis C.K.'s reason for changing his name is the same as Don Ameche (originally spelled Amici), and Don Ameche's probably more iconic.
Also, Nicholas Cage stated in a behind-the-scenes discussion on the 20th Anniversary release of Valley Girl that he chose Cage as a last name because he falt "caged in" as a Coppola. He didn't mention any comic books though.
When Geraldo Rivera was a reporter for NBC, he went by Gerry Rivers
Hector Boiardi. Stage Name: Chef Boyardee
Hey I learned something new. I didn't know that Albert Brooks and Super Dave are brothers lol
Not one mention of the most famous name change from the Golden-Age of Hollywood...Real Name: James Stewart Stage Name: Stewart Granger.
I can’t be the only one who saw Louis C.K. and thought this would be a video about stars who changed their name and possibly identities once they were outed for doing questionable things....
Love her pronunciation of Kirk Douglas Birth name....
The first syllable of Szé-kely is pronounced "sā" (as in "safe") and the second one is "ka" (as in "cat") + the "y" phoneme at the end.
Source: am Hungarian.
I went to h.s with a dude named Dave Jones.. it never dawned on me then.
I'd never heard the name Halloween Jack.. it's kinda cool.
Another member of the Coppola family: Talia Shire. I did not know Jason Schwartzman is also related. I'm willing to bet there are many branches in the very talented Coppola tree.
6:35 it appears that Joaquin was always capable of getting his scary scowl on.. that side profile looks so recognizable.
Surprised that Meg Ryan originally had five names, four first names and a last name. Funny that one of the supposedly manliest of men John Wayne was given a girl's name: Marion.
John Mellencamp used to go by the stage name John Cougar.
Michael Keton's co-star in Beeteljuice was born Winona Horowitz.
Frances Ethel Gumm, member of the "Gun sisters" or the "Glum" Sisters as they were referred to in misspellings. They had to change their name to the "Garland" Sisters and alas... Judy Garland.
hah hearing Nicholas Cage's name always reminded me of Luke Cage. Now I know it wasn't a coincidence they had the same last name.
Norma Jeane Mortenson (Baker) - Marilyn Monroe
Walter Matuschanskayasky - Walter Matthau
Mario Girotti - Terence Hill
Carlo Pedersoli - Bud Spencer
Alecia Beth Moore - P!nk
Stefani Germanotta - Lady Gaga
Archibald Alec Leach - Cary Grant
Georgios panayiotou = George michael
Super Dave & Albert Brooks are brothers ! It cool see Super Dave back in anything on T.V. ,And not just on Curb Your Enthusiasm .
Joan Crawford. Real name: Lucille Fay LeSueur
John Wayne was Marion Michael Morrison, not Robert.
Actor Fisher Stevens was originally Steven Fisher but there was already one in SAG.
Tim Allen ( of Home Improvement )- from Tim Dick. Requested by the promoter of a comedy club in Michigan. The club promoter told Allen - we can't put that ( his last name) on the marquee and asked - What's your middle name? Tim replied -Allen. Allen it is .
What about Reginald Kenneth Dwight as Sir Elton John .
I think John Wayne should have been number 2 because Wyatt Earp himself told him to change his name because there are no cowboys named Marion.
Ronald Reagan is an interesting case. When he first got into acting, he tried using his nickname from his sports broadcasting days, Dutch Reagan. However, the producers didn't like it. He then suggested his real name which they did like, so he became a rare 50's movie star who didn't use a stage name at all.
How is Cockburn pronounced Coburn?
***** If the K is silent, it's still coCburn. So, are both C and K silent? If so, that's plain stupid.
So, if C and K are silent, does Louie still have a last name?
Its an English name....that is how we pronounce it...
dang hollywood is like social media, you can't sign up until you find a username that isn't taken
Robert Allen Zimmerman who first used Bobby Allen to perform as before encountering another Bobby Allen he then used Bob Dillon for a short while, basically because he was a fan of 'Gunsmoke', before seeing Dylan Thomas' name written down and becoming Bob Dylan.
I'm enjoying the irony of Michael Keaton having to change his name because Kirk Douglas changed HIS. :)
where's Katy Perry
I didn't know that Super Dave is Albert Brooks' brother. Wow.
Arnold Dorsey changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck. Reginald Dwight became Elton John, and Richard Starkey became Ringo Starr
I belive the crown belongs to the late actor Herbert Lom (1917-2012) . He was born as "Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru" ... so at the start of his career he checked a phone book and picked the shortest name he could find.
Funny scene from the movie with Hulk Hogan HA HA HA HA...
Larry The CableGuy?
Tiger Woods?
Not their offical legal name. These peope changed their name
so when nicolas cage come to check in in hotel and they ask for ID whats then? xD
